Rory’s Race Report
27 Sept Morley Honda Six Hour - 3 Oct Suzuki Six Hour 10
Oct GNCC Round 1
Hi all
As you can see it’s been a busy couple of weeks.
My fellow Yamaha rider, Adrian Smith and I, decided to team up for the Morley Honda 6hour. The event was in
Nelson, so with our one man pit crew and the van loaded to the roof, we made the trip south. It was the
smooth sailing as I had hoped for, but the guys still looked a little green. When we arrived in Nelson, we
stopped in at Morley Motorcycles to see how things were shaping up for the big race. Apparently it wasn’t
going to be as wet or as technical as us keen enduro riders hoped for. But not fazed, we were still very excited
about the days racing ahead. On race day, we got off to a great start and pretty much lead from start to finish,
winning the event by some 6minutes.
The following weekend I headed to Napier to compete in the Suzuki Six Hour, once again teaming up with
Adrian. We got off to a good start, 5th into the forests and came into the pits at the end of the 1st lap in front.
Adrian took over for the 2nd lap on the YZ; we managed to stay in the lead, with the Honda Team of Chris and
Karl Power following closely. By the end of the 3rd lap, myself and Adrian along with Team Power were already
10mins ahead of the rest, effectively making it a two horse race. But it wasn’t to be, the clutch started to slip
badly, so at the 4 hour mark we called it a day. Such a shame, but that’s racing.
This last weekend I headed to Matata, near Tauranga, for the 1st round of the GNCC. It was a great track with
plenty of fast flowing sections and the odd bog to catch out the unwary. I lead from start to finish, in the 2.5
hour race and took home the gold. I was very pleased, making a great start to yet another epic series.
I have been given the opportunity to use the Leatt Neck Brace and a GPR steering damper. With regards to the
Leatts Neck Brace, it’s awesome, feels comfortable and gives me that added security. I can thoroughly
recommend getting one.
The GPR steering damper is great and makes the bike so stable on those fast forestry roads and open farm
land, while stopping all deflection in those gnarly bush sections. Well worth getting one.
I’m off to ride moto trials over the next couple of weekends, to hone up my technical skills.
Cheers
Rory Mead
