  It hit the fork. Thats where the shear stress was applied to cause it to rupture. Fn' Civil Engineering im starting to sound like Major Dorkus

  Actually, a rupture would insinuate that was some sort of pressure build up inside the frame. By the looks of the folded metal on the downtube and the jagged edged metal at the site of the break, it would appear that a load was applied longitudinally through the top tube. This load found the weakest point in the metal causing a catastrophic failure of the structural integrity of the frame at the fracture site.

  Rupture, or ductile rupture- describes the ultimate failure of tough ductile materials loaded in tension. Rupture describes a failure mode in which, rather than cracking, the material "pulls apart", generally leaving a rough surface. SEE ALSO Fracture.
