Q&A
Why do you like this sport?
I skate because I love it. The day I started, it felt perfect and I knew I'd be skating for as long as my body allows. There's so much creativity and diversity involved. I can do my own thing. It's great being able to go out, practice, and think of new tricks. One of the main things that is always going through my head when I'm skating is "What else can come from this trick or movement?" Skateboarding is my way of expression and it's a lot of fun!
Describe your style...
I've been asked this a few times and I have to say I've never really come up with a concrete answer. I just try to stay relaxed and keep the landings as soft as possible. I'd say my style is somewhat similar to a lot of the freestyle skaters from the 80's and the street skaters from the early 90's. I like trying to make all my tricks look clean because it helps me land the next trick I work on that much better.
Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
I do have certain exercises that I do when I'm not skating. Stretching is super important so I always do that before I skate, run, or train in any way. When I'm not skating, I practice Le Parkour which is a type of freestyle movement from point a to point b. A lot of the warm up and meditation exercises carry over seamlessly from Le Parkour to skating since they're geared so much toward physical and mental preservation. A regime of pull ups, sit ups, rope jumping, and running, along with all the necessary stretching, is how I keep in good health for skating and in general. Of course, skating is good exercise in itself!
How's Life Treating You?
Pretty good. I'll have my Bachelor's degree soon and then my family and I are moving to San Diego, CA. I'm really looking forward to that because I've wanted to live there for as long as I can remember. Other than school and other day to day stuff, I'm working with my dad doing carpentry for now and skating in my free time.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
I don't honestly get embarrassed in most situations. I really like jokes and goofy stuff like Adult Swim on Cartoon Network so I think that's a big part of it. Although, during my first year of high school on the first day of classes, someone threw an open carton of milk on me for wearing a certain brand of clothing and they yelled "poser!" It was in the cafeteria so a lot of people saw what happened. I guess if I had to choose a moment, it would be that one.
