Q&A - Competition
How did you get started?
My kids have been racing since 1996. I've been into riding bikes since I was young, but never competed. I built a BMX bike to ride practice with my kids, but now I'm hooked on the competition of it. It's just as exciting as the motocross or road racing I've done in the past.
List your competitive highlights:
This year(2009)I was was ranked 3rd in Nor-Cal for my age group in 36-40 Men. It was great racing every one. I just got 3rd at the 2009 Black Jack Nationals.If the track had been 10 ft longer I would have had 2nd. I also did my first downhill race at Sea Otter this year. My chain fell off (dual ring set-up) going over the log drop. I got 12th in CAT 3 out of 24 riders despite the chain! The funny thing is my time was good for 10th in CAT 2. Definitely a lot of sand baggers in MTB racing.
What are you planning for next season?
I plan to race several DH races including Sea Otter DH and dual slalom. I'm going to step up to CAT 2. My 9 year old daughter and I have challenged each other to get NAG plates in ABA BMX next year. I'll be moving up to Intermediate class soon, no sand bagging for me!
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
Marrying my wife and deciding to spend more time doing things with my kids and less time racing cars. At the 2009 Nor-Cal ABA State Finals my son was ranked 6th overall, my older daughter was 4th in class and 2nd on her cruiser overall,and my younger daughter and I were ranked 3rd overall. Racing bikes is a family activity for us.
