The transcendence of generosity comes from not regretting, missing or even noticing the thing given. When you give something away, you experience great karmic gain, since you have thereby not only helped another person, but also freed yourself from attachment to that object.

A man who is seeking for realization is not only going round searching for his spectacles without realizing that they are on his nose all the time, but also were he not actually looking through them he would not be able to see what he is looking for! - Ask the Awakened by Wei Wu Wei

It is important to recognize the power of our emotions--and to take responsibility for them by creating a light and positive atmosphere around ourselves. This attitude of joy that we create helps alleviate states of hopelessness, loneliness, and despair. SEATTLE (NOVEMBER 28, 2007) – System AVD Inc., a Seattle-based design company, has announced the release of the Rusty Malinoski Pro-Model design boat wrap.  In addition, Rusty becomes the first athlete System AVD will sponsor.

The custom designed boat wrap, which matches the design of Malinoski’s personal MasterCraft X-Star, will be available in 2008 at MasterCraft dealers world-wide, including installation services in the United States and Canada.

“We are providing top of the line boat wrap designs and there is no better athlete to represent our product than Rusty Malinoski,” said Josh Sirlin, System AVD co-owner.  “We’re very excited to be sponsoring Rusty, not only because he’s a leader in the industry, but his style aligns with our company’s brand perfectly.  We are looking forward to working with him for many years to come.”

The boat wrap was custom-designed for Rusty by having him work with the design team at System AVD.  After Rusty shared his thoughts and ideas, the design team was able to create the graphic that he was hoping for.

“I was able to explain to System AVD what I had in mind for my boat, and they created the coolest looking graphic I have seen,” said Rusty Malinoski.  “Josh was really easy to work with and after seeing the work they did on my boat, we decided it would be a good idea to work hand-in-hand.”

A variety of System AVD’s boat wraps are currently available at all MasterCraft Dealers in the world with additional designs being released throughout 2008.  Consumers can visit their local MasterCraft dealer to purchase the designs.  For MasterCraft dealer locations, visit www.mastercraft.com.

“The program System AVD has offered is truly unique and will help drive our business to a whole new level of creativity,” said John C. Behling, director of marketing, MasterCraft Boat Company.

Freestyle Contest Winner to Receive Athlete Sponsorship for One Year

“Are You Next?”

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., (November 28, 2007) − Freestyle, the original action sports watch manufacturer, announces its search for a new team rider. In conjunction with Loop’d.com, Freestyle is hosting a contest called “Are You Next?” which will ultimately result in a year-long athlete sponsorship for one lucky winner.

Starting on November 28, 2007, athletes throughout North America will have a chance to win a coveted spot on Freestyle’s official athlete roster. Surfers, wakeboarders, skateboarders, snowboarders, mountain bikers, bmx and motocross riders will submit their best action video or photo of themselves. Each week, for 12 weeks total, Freestyle will sort through every entry and pick one photo and one video winner weekly. Winners will then be entered to win the grand prize.

Weekly winners will receive a Freestyle prize pack including a watch worth up to $150.00, a t-shirt, wristband, hat and sticker packs. Should the contestants not win one week, they’ll have a chance to submit another photo or video the next week, resulting in 12 chances to impress Freestyle and win. The grand prize winner, announced on February 29, 2007, will receive a one-year sponsorship including six watches per year, team t-shirts, hats, accessories, stickers as well as a photo and contest incentive bonus package. The winner will be well-represented by Freestyle with a profile on www.FreestyleUSA.com/Team and a banner ad on the Freestyle homepage.

“The ‘Are You Next?’ contest is a great way for aspiring action sport athletes to gain exposure and take their game to the next level,” said Freestyle Marketing Director, Chad LaBass. “A lot of these athletes live in areas that make it difficult to connect with sponsors, but by reaching out through the loopd.com social network we are giving them opportunity to make their presence known.” Freestyle receives hundreds of emails each month with sponsorship inquiries. This contest gives athletes a chance to not just ask for a sponsorship but to prove that they are worthy of one. It is a great stepping stone for the winner to possibly earn a paid sponsorship by Freestyle for years to come.

Freestyle is looking for quality videos and photos. If possible, contestants should work with an experienced videographer or photographer to up their chances of being selected. Showing Freestyle some love will help too. Wearing a Freestyle watch or t-shirt and displaying Freestyle stickers on boards, bikes and helmets are great ways to catch the judges’ eye. Contestants should stay on top of the game and see what they’re up against by checking back to the site each week to compare their entries with the winning videos and photos.

Check out the contest details and submissions on http://freestylecontest.loopd.com. For some great inspiration for contest videos and photos check out Freestyle’s impressive roster of athletes at www.FreestyleUSA.com/Team.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. today announced that it will join forces with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) as the presenting sponsor of its new motocross team, which will field two riders in the 2008 Supercross and Motocross series.

As the presenting sponsor of the JGR team, Toyota expands its presence in the world of two-wheeled racing. Currently Toyota is the title sponsor of the AMA Motocross and Arenacross series and is the official truck of the AMA and GP Supercross series. Toyota also provides privateer support programs that support the riders in each of the series.

"The Gibbs Racing sponsorship is a natural progression of Toyota's motorcycle racing support," says Paul Czaplicki, Engagement Marketing Manager for Toyota. "Toyota's current involvement in the sport has been very successful and sponsoring a team was the next step in continuing our support of the sport, athletes and fans."

As part of the JGR sponsorship, Toyota logos will be prominently displayed on the team's bikes, riders' gear and transporter. The team and riders -- Josh Hansen and Josh Summey -- will be seen around the pits and town in Toyota Tundra trucks. In addition, fans will find a JGR replica bike in Toyota's International Motorcycle Show exhibit space starting in October 2007.

An added benefit of the sponsorship is the behind the scenes opportunities it offers to the fans. Toyota and JGR will be developing informational displays and videos with the JGR team mechanics and team manager, Jeremy Albrecht. These videos and interactive experiences will be found at Supercross, Motocross and Arenacross events across the country and will showcase bike set up tips and techniques as well as how set ups differ to match the terrain and series the rider is racing.

"Toyota's a great partner and we are looking forward to having them join us in our new racing effort," says Coy Gibbs, President, Joe Gibbs Racing MX.

Earlier this month, Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. announced JGR will run Toyota Camrys for the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Joe Gibbs Racing presented by Toyota team will make their debut in Anaheim, Calif. On January 5, 2008 for the first Supercross race of the 2008 season

How to Get Sponsored

Or, How to Not Get Sponsored

Mark Waters.....

It's an old skateboarding cliché, but it remains true: if you're good, you'll get noticed. Getting noticed can lead to free boards and shoes and clothes and trips around the world to ride your skateboard in front of adoring fans and of course, these days, lots of money! If you want to speed up this process, there are ways to go about it. Here are some tips.

Be realistic and reasonable about your skateboarding skills. Just because you can do a few tricks, and you've been skating for two years now, doesn't mean anything. A good way to measure yourself against others is to watch skateboarding videos and compare. Skateboarding doesn't have to be competitive, but there are unwritten standards of style and ability. The lines of what makes a skater "good enough" to be sponsored aren't set in stone; they're moved all the time, but if you aren't sure, it's a good idea to see where you stand.  Pick someone's video part and compare. If you can't match all the tricks in anyone's video part on the company you're trying to get on, it might be a rough road. On the other hand, like I said before, there are no rules, and many companies really want to avoid skaters who do the same tricks as their existing riders, so if you're different than the company's riders and still ripping, it might be a plus. Keep in mind, though that there are pre-existing standards of excellence at each brand of skateboard (or shoe, or wheel, or whatever.) Also, most companies want amateurs who already skate like pros but don't have the name recognition. Is that you? If you think you measure up, then you're ready to make the move.

Skating with members from a certain team is a good way to catch their attention. If you're at a demo and you're skating well, of course you'll be noticed. Let your skating do your talking. Don't approach people you don't know with such an overzealous attitude that you'll make them wary of you. Self-confidence is good, but cockiness isn't. If you want to speak with somebody, talk to him like you would any skater. Leave out the stupid bit about "Holy cow, I'm actually talking to Eric Koston!" Putting most skaters on a pedestal just makes them uncomfortable. Leave the "Oh my god, you're my favorite skateboarder!" and the "Can I have your autograph twenty times?" to the little kids and the kooks. An autograph is OK, maybe, but again, be respectful about it.

When skating at a demo, one thing you don't want to do is to try to one-up somebody.  In case you're really clueless, one-upping is the name for trying to out-do the pros (or anyone) at a demo. A one-upper will watch to see what trick the pro is trying, then, before the pro makes the trick, the local, who usually has skated the park before, does the trick. All of a sudden all the locals' friends are slapping him on the back, telling him, "Yeah, you're better than Geoff Rowley, dude!" This accomplishes several things. First, it does get them noticed. But unless the guy has complete skills, one trick does not a skateboarder make. Second, it usually turns people off. Although some people are able to laugh at this stuff, most skaters usually give (and expect in return) some show of respect, and this isn't a respectful move. Third, and this is a direct result of number two, in most cases it shows people you're a kook. No one wants kooks on their team. So one-upping isn't a good thing.

Another way to get hooked up, especially if you live away from areas where your favorite team riders skate, is the good ol' "Sponsor Me" video. This method works pretty well if you've got what it takes, and lots of people, especially those from outside California, have started with a good video. Here're some things to keep in mind when making a video:

Don't make a video that wouldn't fit into the company you're sending it to's latest video. If you send a video to Toy Machine, make sure that the level of skating fits in with Welcome To Hell or Jump Off A Building. If it doesn't, why in hell would they sponsor you? Those videos are old, and the skating in it is even older, so all those guys are even better now. You don't necessarily have to worry about the filming quality, (although it wouldn't hurt) but the skating is what counts. When you watch skateboarding videos, notice how the cuts are short and there's not a lot of long bullshit before and after each trick. Edit your video the same way. Music is a nice touch, but won't help bad skating, just like a poor editing job and bad filming can't hide a skaters' natural talent. And that's the thing to remember: the video is just a tool for showing skateboarding ability, not a substitute for it.

Although most young skateboarders would be happy to ride for any company who offered, it might be better in the long run to pick a company and be loyal to them as you get better. There's nothing more stupid than sending a video and a letter (see below) to a company saying "I love Birdhouse and I'd do anything to ride for you!" But then, throughout the video, the kid's riding Real boards and World Industries boards and wearing Flip tee shirts. If you want to ride for Birdhouse because you think their team is the best and the boards are the best, then buy their boards, wear their shirts, (at least when you're filming your sponsor-me video) and act like you ride for them already. (However, don't lie and tell your friends that you do. This is another syndrome: kids who buy a bunch of product from one company just so they can tell their friends they're getting hooked up!) Send them a video. If you get no response or they tell you they aren't interested, believe in yourself enough to stick with it. A year later, send them another video. They may remember your name and they'll notice how much better you've gotten, and then you'll have their attention. They'll see that you really believe in their company and in yourself, and you'll be on your way. If you're good enough, that is. But look at it the other way. If you think that Birdhouse is the best company (the "bomb" as Steve Berra wouldn't say), why would you want to ride for another company? Why would you sell yourself short? That wouldn't be good for you or the company you ended up riding for. This is a good time to remember to be realistic, though, and Mr. Realism and Mr. Idealism are not always friendly to each other. If you'll never get on Birdhouse, and World Industries makes you an offer, shine the ideals and go for the gusto!

When you send your video, send a letter with it telling about who you are, how old you are, where you live, and maybe some other things, like what your goals are, or if you're really funny looking and will promise to provide hours of comic relief in the tour van, or whatever. Make sure your video is clearly labeled. Most companies get handfuls of these things every day! Also, go out and spend $2.99 on damn new videotape. More than one company has gotten a phone call from angry parents who had their favorite family memories taped over and sent away by their skateboarder son for his sponsor me tape.

Lastly, remember, this is skateboarding, and so there are no rules, so only use this as a guideline. Or don't use it at all! Have fun.

McRad

FDR

Uprising

***

Wow, McRad is back. Or more correctly, Chuck Treece has decided to revisit his old band’s moniker and sound (while otherwise moonlighting from his main gig as an outstanding session musician for the likes of Sting, Billy Joel, and Jadakis). For those not aware of “skate rock” or of Treece’s history in skateboarding, the two go hand in hand. Treece was once a pro skater for Powell. He had a defining skate-rock band named McRad. Back in the mid 80s to early 90s, schralpers by the tens-of-thousands made mixed tapes featuring tunes by Drunk Injuns, Faction, Beyond Possession, JFA, Los Crudos, Agent Orange and… McRad. As a genre, the scene sort of came and went with the early days of team videos (The Search For Animal Chin, Shackle Me Not, etc.). In general, skate-rock bands either sounded semi-punk, hardcore, or metal—you know, music that’d get you stoked to session. Anything with driving beats, buff riffs (usually played over and over), and lyrics vaguely anti-establishment, lewd, funny, or odes to “getting rad” was pretty much labeled skate rock. FDR sounds like the last twenty years never happened. Whee!—Arlie Carstens

Bob Burnquist is now on IPATH

IPATH is pleased to announce that Bob Burnquist is the latest addition to the team.  Bob’s unique approach to skateboarding makes him a solid fit for the expanding IPATH crew.

From innovating every time he steps on a skateboard, to his own legendary backyard park and mega-ramp, to organic farming, Bob follows his own unique path in every aspect of his life.

“Bob is a perfect fit for the IPATH team and we’re stoked to have him onboard,” stated IPATH’s President Brian Krauss.  “Bob’s distinctive approach to skating and the decisions he makes on a personal level mesh perfectly with IPATH’s vision.  Our entire team is made up of unique individuals and the addition of Bob to the crew only enforces that.”

Despite turning pro in Brazil when he was 14, he was a relative unknown in the US until he won the prestigious Slam City Jam, stunning the crowd with his technical switch skating. This then catapulted his skateboarding career to numerous other successes, including: Thrasher's coveted Skater Of The Year crown and multiple X-Games medals. However, his contest wins only compliment his deep bag of trick innovations and skateboarding firsts.

Bob is currently hard at work filming for the long-awaited Flip Skateboards video 'Extremely Sorry', due out spring 2008. Watch for more from Bob online at

I’m tempted to name today as 1/1/01 A.D., as in “After Davenport.” I just got an advance copy of Dav’s new book “Ski The 14ers” — and that’s (nearly) how earth shattering I believe this is as a mountaineering publication.

In case you’ve been living in a Patagonian snowcave with no satphone, it was just early last winter when Davenport finished his project to ski all Colorado 14,000 foot peaks in one 12 month period. Not only was that an amazing accomplishment, but he skied the peaks in style that was true to the modern “free skiing” “big mountain” ethos that requires bold descents, preferably with excellent photographers and videographers in tow. More, as Michael Kennedy writes in his back cover squib: “…Davenport’s skill and audacity on skis is matched by firm respect for history and steadfast devotion to ideals of… tenacity and commitment.” Well, if Dav’s performance on the 14ers wasn’t enough, he’s applied those same standards to this beautiful printed tribute to our 14ers and the art of skiing them.

“Ski The 14ers” is a big bold audacious coffee table book, 12×13 inches, 144 pages, with over 200 color photos. Yep, this book is about images. Sure, I’m indeed honored by Davenport including a foreword I penned, and each peak has text written by Dav that runs the gamut from straight reporting to soulful insight. But wow, the photos are fantastic! For example, ever wondered what the Landry Route on Pyramid Peak really looks like (especially after trying to check it out using the tiny black and white photo in my old 14er guidebook)? Just flip to page 73 and there she be, glory, thanks to photog and Dav trip partner Neal Beidleman. And with Pyramid it’s not only about the photo, but also the historic second descent of the Landry Route 28 years after the first. Ditto for Capitol Peak, which Davenport and Beidleman skied a new and super tough line on.

The book is organized with a chapter for each range along with a section for each peak. One thing that struck me is the excellent combination of downhill ski images, climbing shots and lifestyle vignettes. Book designer Art Burrows took a risk by not packing this pub with cliche ski “porn,” but it works. I love climbing, many of you blog readers love climbing, so why not show more photos of how we spend most of our days in the mountains? I guess in some cases publishers such as movie makers just can’t do that — probably because many so called “big” mountain skiers wimp out and spend their careers riding helicopters.

Chris has done his share of heli skiing, after all, he has to make a living. But he loves climbing just like we do, and take my word for it, his climbs on the 14ers were just as important to him as the down. Or don’t listen to me, just check out the book.

http://wolverinepublishing.com/ski_14ers.html

Doing so might be a good idea because I believe the first printing of this book will sell out immediately. Looking for the ultimate 2007 skier’s Christmas gift? Get on it.

Now, let me get a little more personal about this. I didn’t know Chris that well when he started his project, but I knew he was a skilled climber and a world class skier. Thus, my immediate take when he proposed his then (and still) audacious project was not skepticism, but rather something like “wow, this is what I’ve been waiting for!”

I’ve now got quite a lengthy mountaineering career under my belt, and one thing that’s enriched those years has been the heroes I looked back on while striving for my own accomplishments — and even heroes of my own generation who did things I failed at or never even had time to try. That’s all great, but with Chris I had an entirely new generational experience as a mountain man. I now had a hero of what we can call the “next generation, ” and discovered there’s no better glow than seeing the next gen come along, take up the torch, and exceed even your wildest expectations. I’m sure the ride I got out of this is minuscule in comparison to that which Dav and his partners got, but it was very special to me, even sweet. And now this book sums it all up.

What’s more, I’d like to thank Chris Davenport for his sharing attitude in all this. Some have accused his hype and publicity as being ego driven in a negative sense. Now knowing Chris fairly well and having communicated with him quite a bit throughout his project, I’d say he’s no more at fault with the ego issue than any normal person, and that the bulk of his motivation is simply to share the trove of white gold he’d found in Colorado (and of course perform the necessary PR work for his career as a professional skier). Look at it this way, if you found a pile of gold on the street, wouldn’t you spread some around? That’s what Dav is doing with “Ski The 14ers.” In that he honors myself and all other 14er skiers, as well as alpinism in general.

(P.S., let’s hope we see this book as a contender in the next Banff Book Festival — I’m betting it’ll win top prize — what an honor that would be for ski mountaineering!)

Carlsbad, CA (November 6, 2007) – In celebration of Mick Fanning’s world title, Reef invites fans around the world to share in the victory. Fanning sealed the deal on his championship year in Brazil today winning the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.

“To win the world title after years of hard work feels incredible,” says Mick Fanning, the 2007 World Champion and Reef Team Rider. “I’ve just had my head down and been really focused for the whole year. Now with the pressure off my back, I can enjoy this world title. It’s a dream come true.”

The commemorative Champion Fanning sandal featuring black Italian full grain leather, pig skin lining, golden accents and a metal ‘World Champ’ logo on the toe post will be unveiled February 2008 in stores. Fanning is sporting a similar limited edition 18K gold style of his signature sandal that Reef awarded to Mick for his stellar achievement. All of the sandals feature the exclusive bottle opener in the sole and cushioning airbags in the heels.

A stunning final heat in Brazil pulled together what has been a brilliant year for Fanning who found himself in peak health, focused and surfing at an unbelievably high level. As Taj Burrows, who was second in the ratings, walked onto the beach following a loss in the quarterfinals, it was announced that Fanning had secured the title.

The new world champion paddled back to win a semifinals heat against fellow Australian Joel Parkinson and a finals heat against Kai Otton. Determined to win the contest along with the title he powered through the six foot, rights with fast turns.

Winning the title in Brazil at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, the second to last event on the Foster’s ASP World Tour, makes Fanning the fifth surfer to claim the title on South American soil. Fanning came into the event as the ratings leader, a post he held throughout much of his stellar 2007 season.

Fanning has been riding with Reef since he was 14 years old and 2008 will be his 13th year with Reef. “We’re so proud of Mick! He’s worked incredibly hard for this win. To hold the world title up at the end of the season is a dream for him and we’re happy to stand by him on the biggest day of his career so far,” says Heath Walker, Reef Global Athlete Manager.

Fanning sets his sites next on adding a Triple Crown title to his remarkable 2007 season. Starting on November 12th, Fanning paddles into the line up in Haleiwa on Oahu’s North Shore as the Reef Hawaiian Pro kicks off the Vans Triple Crown. Also, don’t miss Fanning’s stellar segments in Reef Mixed Tape: Volume 1, in stores now!
