1) What do you like to do off the track?
I like th spend time with my family and work around the house. I love watching BMX racing videos and keeping updated on what's happening in BMX.
2) What got you started racing?
I started racing BMX back in 1979 in Minnesota when a track opened up close to my house. I learned about BMX a few years earlier at the local Schwinn dealer and was hooked. I Turned Expert in 1981 at the age of 16 after winning the 15-16 Novice Minnesota State Championships. I turned A Pro in 1982 and raced the Rondo Classic series and Midwest Gold Cups and Nationals before retiring from the sport in 1983. I returned to BMX racing in 2003. After a slow fisrt season back, I quickly improved and am now competitive in Both Santions mostly in the Cruiser class.
2) What are your goals for the 08/09 season?
To race more than last season and start training more. Now that I have to race Greg Hill I need to step up the program. I hope to compete at the USAC Nationals again this season and maybe even attend the UCI Worlds if I qualify. I sure would love to make the Main at this years Worlds in 45+ Cruiser!
4) So between training, work, and family do you have any time for yourself?
I do make time for myself but I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids. We like riding bikes and playing video games. The Internet is also huge in my house. We usually plan a vacation that doesn't include either and visit Disney often. This year my wife and I are started to ride together on Mountain Bikes!!
5) What was your greatest achievement from 2008?
This season was very slow for me. I made a few mains and the highlight of the season was the NBL Grands. I raced both 41x and 40-44 Cruiser at the age of 44. I missed the main in both which has stimulated me to train harder and go for a top 10 plate in 2009. I still hold the 2005 NBL Grands as my most significant achievement so far making the main and placing 5th and 9th overall.
6) Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
I do train....no really....OK not as much as I need to. I have learned a lot about training over the past five years and have developed a program that I have not been able to start and hold. It is a mixture of weight training, sprints, and plyomtrics. This season I am adding a more intensive use of my Concept 2 model C rower to improve my VO2peak.
7) Why do you like this sport?
I love BMX because it's short a sweet. The intensity is almost a natural high. I like the feeling of flying on my bike eventhough it's only 12" off the ground most of the time. Off the track the people and travel adds a lot too.
8) Do you like to travel? What's your best (clean) road trip story?
I love to travel most of the time. Seeing new sites and meeting new people is always stimulating. Out of many experiences the one that stands out to me was getting stuck in Iowa back in 1981/2. Imagine me at 16 traveling to Iowa from Minnesota with two kids (12 and 9) to race a double pointer. After the race sunday is was getting dark and I switched the lights on or so I thought. No lights and driving through Cedar Rapids I was quickly stopped and shut down. I had no money, kids that now would miss school and I needed a place to stay. We pooled what we had and found a cheap hotel and took off at first light.
9) What inspires you to compete?
I have always enjoyed winning...who doesn't. The feeling that at that moment you are the one. I never feel bad when I loose to good competition but to have the chance to win or getting close to the top riders in my class is always a blast. I also like racing the younger riders since they should beat me.
10) What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be a kid.
