Everyone has there own story, background, dreams and ambitions. To be honest I'm more interested in hearing what others have to say, than telling my own.
I grew up with two older bothers, chasing them around with a soccer ball, racing to the street corner, and climbing to the top of the trees. When I was eight, I was diognoised with cancer. As a result, my right leg was amputated above the knee in October 1994. Through high school I tried participating in volleyball and basketball, but I was constantly comparing myself with every other athlete on the team. I could never run as fast, get as many shots or jump as high. I needed something that was just mine.
I tried single-track skiing. Thats like what you see in the paralympics where they ski on one ski with either outriggers or poles. I liked the concept and being on the snow. I loved the adreline, but something just wasn't right, something was missing. When I first mentioned snowboarding everyone responded "what? thats impossible." At the time, we thought it was. Two years later, a physical therapist stepped forward and gave me the opportunity to prove that it couldn't only be done, but it could be done well. I owe alot to the individuals that have been apart of my life; many thanks to all of you.
I picked up rock climbing six months ago and instantly fell in love with sport. Encouragement from friends has also helped me crash into the wakeboarding scene. My dream is to see adaptive halfpipe and slopestyle in the paralympics. Its amazing that everyday comes closer to seeing that dream come true.
My name is Nicole Roundy, I am a survivor, I am an amputee, I ride.
