A NOVEL BY LIZ TIGELAAR

1 Team

2 Sisters

3 Million Reasons to Hate Each Other

4 Months to Win it All

The two Brown sisters couldn’t be more different---15 year-old Charlie Brown, (yes, a cruel parental hoax), stick straight, star surfer, decidedly unsophisticated, and Krista, 17, beautiful and best at everything. It takes a soccer championship to bring the sisters together as the lessons learned go far beyond the playing field.

CHARLIE:

My older sister Krista and I used to be friends. We’d hang out, go to the beach together. Krista would watch me while I surfed. Back then, I couldn’t wait to get to high school.

But now? Everything has changed. Krista is perky, popular…and pathetic. All she cares about are her designer clothes, her fake friend Brooks, her boyfriend Cam, and her image as the most perfect girl in school.

Straight-A student, star athlete-when I stand next to her, I might as well be invisible! But this year, I’ve been recruited to Krista’s soccer team. And I’m going to blow her out of the water. That’s sure to get me noticed.

KRISTA

My sister Charlie is a total freak. She thinks she’s some kind of surf-girl rebel. But the truth is, she’s just mean. That’s why she has no friends.

Charlie is always giving me a hard time. She has no idea what life is like! Between Brooks critiquing my outfits, and Cam pressuring me, I feel like I’m going to lose it!

Now, Charlie’s joining the soccer team. I’m supposed to be captain this year. If Charlie thinks she can beat me at my own game, she’s got another thing coming.

Girls Kick Grass

New Website Gives Sporty Girls Online Turf

(May 4, 2007) Pretty Tough LLC, has made it their mission to empower girls and young women to excel in athletics while remaining true to their feminine self. In keeping with that mission they have launched their all new website www.prettytough.com. Filled with new and vintage sports-related videos, music, profiles on women athletes, fashion and beauty advice, and a book club (Pretty Tough has a new novel series) this website is teaching girls that being pretty and tough are NOT mutually exclusive.

What has set PrettyTough.com apart from other social networking sites is their compilation of extraordinary videos of female athletes and coaches. From daredevils in action, motorsports, soapbox, motocross and bmx, to female super stars in figure skating, softball, basketball, tennis, soccer, and gymnastics, there is something for everyone. Some of these amazing videos are of their very own Pretty Tough Team, a group of 36 female athletes they sponsor from all areas of sport disciplines.

“Whenever my daughters searched for videos on Youtube or MySpace they were always disappointed. Footage on female athletes competing was difficult to find,” said Founder Jane Schonberger. “We wanted to create a forum where female athletes can share experiences and support one another. Videos are just another way to do that.” Girls can upload their own videos or search the various PrettyTough TV channels. It’s no longer necessary to paw through piles of junk to find the good stuff.

A constant news feed spotlights current matches, wins, awards, competitions, sports camps and noteworthy happenings. PrettyTough.com also boasts a new celebrity profile every month to reveal their athletic and sporty side. We all know Queen Latifah for hip hop and comedic performances, but back in high school this power forward helped her basketball team win two championships. Ashanti, known for her musical range, was a teenage track and field star, excelling in the 100 and 200 meter events, before hitting her musical stride.

Another site highlight is the Sports A-Z section of over 60 sports, from the usual suspects to the more obscure fishing, netball and ringette. Each sport features calendars, personalities, training tips and trivia. And the Health and Fitness pages give tips for making workouts more efficient, while discussing weight, and nutrition.

Although it may be the multiple services and information PettyTough.com provides that brings girls to the site, it is the sense of belonging and community that keeps them coming back. With it’s newly launched blogs and forums young women from all sports arenas who love to play hard, compete and succeed, are reinforced and encouraged.
