Monday Conversation: James StewartPresented by Alpinestars San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart has had a tough go of it the past couple of weeks. In Indy, he fell twice on his way to second place, and in Daytona, he went down in a heap in the first turn and came back through for seventh, while both times out, his championship rival Chad Reed has won. In New Orleans, Stewart finally got back up on the top step of the podium.
1 Racer X: You had a couple of unlucky weeks, but here you are again. Can you tell us what it means to you to get back on track, so to speak? James Stewart: I mean, I don’t think they were unlucky. It was just making mistakes, and that first corner last week was out of my hands. I didn’t really feel like I did anything wrong. I’ve been riding good the whole time, but I just think that when you’re on the ground and trying to dig yourself out of the hole, it’s tough to win races. Tonight was a great night for me, though. I’ve just got to really thank Doug [from Bridgestone] because the track was really slippery and he gave me some awesome tires tonight.
In those early laps, Chad Reed was showing you a wheel here and there. What were you thinking about at that point? I was just thinking about my deal. He’s a great rider, and he does that all the time – he tries to make you over-ride the track and pressure you into a mistake, and tonight I was solid as a brick. I made one mistake in that whoop section over there just because of that sand and stuff, and I was able to throw down some hot laps and ride my race, and I was able to win.
Talk about that rhythm section. You started jumping from the dragon back over the next jump, then tripling out, on the last lap of the Heat, and Reed did it behind you in the main. Reed said he saw you do it on tape and was like, “Dang it,” because he was planning on doing it. I did it one time in practice, and I figured they would’ve gotten it from that, and there were like 18 cameras on me from everybody, but I knew they were going to figure it out. It’s like anything, either jump it or don’t. I jumped it one time, and then I jumped it almost every lap in the main event, and I knew he was going to do it, because I did it right in front of him. He’s a champion, and I knew he was going to do it anyway.
One lap, I saw you case it on both jumps through there... Yeah, one lap, I came up short. I switched my line because I was over going to the far outside, and I kind of just spun, and hit a low line and cased that one, then I went for the next one and cased that one... [Laughs] I was just like, “There’s no way I’m singling. I’d rather do two and a half, two and a half, than go two-one, two-one [laughs].”
That’s the kind of commitment that we expect from you, and we’ve talked in the past about your willingness to do anything it takes to win. So was that an example of that? Honestly, I just think people take that “I want to win” thing the wrong way. I want to win during the week. I work really hard, and I work too hard just to come out here and ride around. Some people say that’s a negative, but honestly I don’t care. I put my heart into it, and if I’m an idol of kids out there, I want them to know that anything I do, I put all my heart into it. At the end of the day, I am who I am, and that’s why my fans love me. I try my best.
1 The sand turn into those whoops seemed really difficult because it robbed your momentum before those whoops. Can you talk about how hard that was to get going, and the big mistake you made in there the one lap? I was just trying to cut back and get into that middle line because it was a little worn-down, and I just slid out. I cut too hard and I slid out. One lap, some guy was down in it, and it’s so hard because that sand, there’s nothing you can do: when you hit it, it just moves. It pushed me straight to the outside, and I had to go around him. It was one of those areas where you could lose a lot of time or make up a lot of time, but I made it through a lot better than I did before, and I was able to capitalize on that. I don’t even know how Chad was doing in there, but I’m sure he was hitting them pretty good. It was all about endurance and trying to focus on my lines and watch the pitboard. I was able to do that.
At Daytona, I saw in a photo of mine that you had both your fingers in one finger of your glove. How much did that bother you for a whole race? I mean, it sucked! It was my two end fingers, and luckily I don’t use the clutch that much, so I was able to hold on, but it was just so annoying. I spent the first two laps trying to pull it out and put it in the right finger hole, but I couldn’t get it out. I didn’t care, though, if I had to snap those suckers off and tape them back on later to try to get as many points as I could [laughs]!
Your bike was really bent up, and to charge through with that, your glove, no visor, and I’m sure you hit your head a bit... I didn’t hit my head, I was just confused because I felt like I fell over – and I got ran over, and Josh [Hill] took my visor off – and then I picked up the first bike I saw that was a blue bike because I figured it had to be mine because there was no way my bike was way over there. And I saw Chad stuck in the first corner, and I saw everybody down, and then he [Hill] told me that wasn’t my bike, so I went over to mine, and I thought, “Man, I should’ve kept [Hill’s bike] because yours was in better shape than mine!” But at the end of the day, it was one of those deals that whether you win or lose the championship, every lap that I race this year – all 20 at every race – I’ve been trying my best, and that’s all I can ask from myself. And Daytona, with a bent-up bike, if I didn’t even have handlebars, I’d steer it by the clamps!
For us, it’s a math problem at this point, just doing the math on how you and Reed are going to end up in this championship, and it doesn’t seem like anyone’s getting between you and Chad, so are you aware of the math problem, and are you thinking about it? I don’t care, it’s just one of those deals where I’ve got to win. Nobody’s gotten between us all year, except for Grant that first race, and for me, I’ve just got to keep on winning and trying. He got seven second-places in a row and it’s not going to change now. All I can do is do my best, and I was able to do that tonight. I’m happy to get the win, but we’ve still got a long way to go. We’ll just see where we end up at the end.

Mar 4 2009 5:03PM San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart won seven races in a row coming into Indy last Saturday night, taking the points lead in the process, coming from an 18-point deficit. But, having never won more than seven in a row, he kept that record together by finishing second to Chad Reed. We talked to him after the race.
1 Racer X: Early on in the race, when you were trying to chase down Chad Reed, you went down. Were you pushing too hard to catch him, which caused you to fall? James Stewart: No, I almost fell there in practice. I just came through and lost the front end, and it definitely wasn’t that I was riding over my head at all. I just made a small bobble and went down.
At this point, Reed’s kind of the underdog, since you’d won so many races in a row coming into tonight. But when you were coming back through, did you hear the crowd? I think they cheered because they want a race, and trust me, that guy’s not the underdog. If I had the number-one plate, it’d be different. Like I said before, I don’t believe in momentum, and every week, we come here and try hard, and he’s racing the best that he can – and I am, too. I don’t believe that he’s the underdog. He won fair and square, and for my part, I did everything possible to let him win the race. But he rode awesome tonight.
At one point, there were three Honda lappers (Andrew Short, Heath Voss and Matt Boni) between you guys, and you came into the turn after the dragonback and skated both wheels into the corner. It looked sketchy. It definitely was, but I knew there was one line from there to the finish line, and I had to make that pass. Those guys got out of the way, so I can’t be mad at them. I saw Chad, and he was in front of them, and I was like, “Dude, I’ve got to get to him right now.” Short moved out of the way, which was cool, and so did Heath, so it was good. I had to make it happen, and I did. I just made it happen too many times [laughs] and fell too many times.
That move put you right back on Reed, which eventually led to the pass before you fell the second time, so was that one of those situations where you were willing to take more risks because you were coming from behind? If I was in the lead, I would’ve done that same thing. It was definitely one of those races where I saw where he was, and I wanted to capitalize right then. I didn’t want to ride around with him. When I got out front, I made a couple mistakes, and he was able to stay there, which kind of made me change my lines a little bit. But like I said, hat’s off to the guy. He deserves a win, and he got it tonight. Everything goes to him.
1 Can you talk about the whoops? Yeah, feet were off, and the right arm was down, just pinning it [laughs]. I don’t care. Whatever it takes to win. I ride hard, and I think that’s why the fans appreciate it. If I didn’t ride hard, I would’ve never caught him, and for me, I can take that home. As many times as I caught him, I feel good.
You said before when we talked that you’d die trying to beat anyone. Going through the whoops a few times, that’s what it looked like, too. That’s why I train hard, so I can ride like that. I don’t care. I want to do whatever it takes to win, and sometimes I make mistakes, but I can tell you right now that those mistakes weren’t from riding over my head. At the end of the day, this was for the championship, and I knew that if I got a win tonight, it would be good, but it’s all good. Going into Daytona, I just have to keep working hard and see where we end up in Vegas.
Finally, I understand you have a new sponsorship in Nike. Can you talk about that? Nike’s the best company out there, honestly, and if they’re going to be involved in the sport, and for me to be a part of that, it’s just great. With switching to Answer, and then bringing in Nike, that’s all I really wanted in the long run. I think it’s a great partnership. We’ll be doing some really cool things, and it should work out great.
How did it come about? Just having some opportunities to do some different things. When we made the change, I thought this was going to be a great opportunity to brand myself with Nike, and everybody’s trying to be like Nike, so to be with the best company out there is just great.

The Daytona SX track being prepped Sat. morning. Photo: Chris Weedon Posted 9am - Round 10 of the AMA Supercross series heads this weekend to the sunshine state of Florida, more specifically Daytona beach for the Daytona Supercross. The Daytona SX is unlike the other 16 rounds. The race is held during Bike week; The track is set-up on the infield of the famed Daytona motor speedway; The track is more like an outdoor national than a supercross and is one of the toughest races of the year. Daytona is filled with history, and this weekend the Supercross stars will make history again here at this great facility.
Shaun Skinner is riding this weekend on the 450s. Photo: Chris Weedon
In BBMX team news, Shaun Skinner will be back this weekend riding for the DNA Energy Drink/BTOsports/BBMX team. Skinner has been out since being landed on in San Francisco a month back. As our Lites west regular, Skinner will be contesting Daytona in the bigger SX class this weekend. Look for Skin-dog to give the riders in the SX class a tough time this weekend.
Kyle Keylon is super pumped to be heading to Daytona with a top 10 under his belt this past weekend in Indy. Keylon rode real strong in Indy and look for him to keep the train rolling with another top 10 in Daytona this weekend. He has been training hard this week in preperation for the greuling outdoor-style Ricky Carmichael designed track.
Jason Thomas and Bryan Johnson are looking to make a strong comeback after not quite making it work in Indy last weekend. JT continuing to ride in the Lites class is stepping it up this weekend to give that #45 a good ride. Johnson is looking for a solid ride to compliment his qualifying sessions he has had the last few weeks. He has the speed, but staying away from the first turn pile-ups is what he is after this weekend.
The Ricky Carmichael designed Daytona Supercross track looks to be a little glimpse of how the outdoor season will look like. Designed on the Daytona Speedway grass infield, the track is for sure to rut up, get choppy and rough. It will test not only the riders mental abilities, but their physical stamina to be strong at the finish.

Practice will get underway here around 12:30pm, so check back for more news from on and off the track here in Daytona.

Posted 12:00pm - With track walk done, the BBMX team is suiting up for practice to start. The track looks very good, with very few changes from last years track. This year's track looks to be a fast track, and will get rough as the day goes on. Check out a few photos from this morning's track walk. The many views of the Daytona SX track. Photos: Chris Weedon
Practice is set to go off here at 12:30, so check back throughout the day for practice updates. -CW Posted 3:15pm - With Practice session one done, BBMX riders Kyle Keylon and Jason Thomas are sitting in a qualifying spot, with Kyle qualified in the 13th spot and JT in the 22nd position. In the SX class, BBMX rider Shaun Skinner is sitting in the 25th spot. Shaun is making some suspension adjustments to dial in the bike better for the rough Daytona track.
 | | | Bryan Johnson | Kyle Keylon |
In the Lites class, Christophe Pourcel is on top and looking smooth on the Daytona track. In the SX class, It's a dogfight for the top spot with James Stewart and Chad Reed going back and forth for the top spot. The surprise of the session was Jason Lawrence setting the 3rd fastest lap time while practicing in the C group session.
Notes: Both James Stewart and Chad Reed went down twice in practice session one. They are both pushing the edge of control and looking for the upper hand on each other.
Jason Lawrence only put in 5 laps on the track, but that was enough for the 3rd overall fastest lap time. If Lawrence actually races tonight, he could be up there battling for the lead.
Posted 5:30pm - Second Practice sessions are done, and BBMX riders Kyle Keylon qualified 13th, Bryan Johnson 14th and Jason Thomas 20th and are in the field for tonights race. Shaun Skinner made the SX field with a solid qualifying run. The BBMX team is ready to take on the Daytona SX track tonight.
Shaun Skinner is firmly in the field. Photo: Chris Weedon
The surprise of the afternoon is Jason Lawrence. After placing his bike in the 3rd spot, Lawrence came out and threw it down to take the #1 qualifying spot with a 1:06. Lawrence taunted everyone as he waved his finger in the air saying "he's #1" for the next two laps after he ran his fastest lap. Lawrence looks to be in great form, so lets hope he doesn't come down with a sudden flu so we get to see im race tonight.

James Stewart crashed twice again in second practice, and did not put in a hot lap in the second session. Stewart looked like he had some trouble with his wrists.
The team is prepping the bikes for tonights race. Log back on for race news and notes. It's going to be a great night of racing!
