Q&A - Personal
What inspires you to compete?
Love of the sport, and love of the challenge. There's something about getting up in the morning and knowing that I'm going to do something that 99% of the world sees as impossible - it's an incredible feeling. My parents raised me to always aspire to be my best, and they continue to be very supportive of my goals - on and off the race course.
Why do you like this sport?
Triathlon is just such an adventure. It's all about pushing your limits, getting your body to a point where it can do the things that you never thought it could do. It's a lifestyle, and the triathlon community is one of the most awesome groups of people I've ever known - laid-back, fun, adventurous, and selfless. It's an honor to race and train with them.
Describe your style...
Are running shorts a style... ? I mean, that's why I took my coaching job... Just kidding. I have pretty laid back style, as I grew up on the coast and surf wear constitutes at least a third of my clothing. I like things that are comfortable and, oftentimes, very brightly colored. And dresses. So people don't forget that I'm still a girly girl.
Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
Hahaha - silly question. Yes, I train. I'm hitting the road/trails/pool every single day except for the occasional rest day every few weeks. This year has been mainly focused on endurance since I've been struggling with some health problems. Lots of long, steady state workouts aiming towards long course races.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Definitely right after I started cycling - I'd just recently started using clipless pedals, with none of the usual embarrassing falls that I'd heard people talk about. I had just finished doing a time trial with the UNT team, and we were all just chilling with one foot clipped in, one out, standing around, and I started bragging about my amazing clipless skills. Then, I immediately fell over. It was classic timing.
