Q&A - Competition

How did you get started?

I started running competitively during my first year of college in 2004, while training with NYU's crew team (I was a varsity coxswain). My dad has been running marathons for about 10 years now, and he was really my inspiration to give the distance a shot. The cycling bug I picked up from a coworker one summer - he was the lifeguard at a camp I was working at, and his stories about competing in several Iron Man competitions sparked the desire to one day qualify for, and brake 10 hours at, the World Championships in Hawaii.

List your competitive highlights:

Completed the inagural Goofy's Challenge in 2006 (1/2 marathon Saturday, full marathon Sunday. It was both my first half and full marathon). Having the overall-lowest combined time at the 2008 Shamrock Marathon's Whale Challenge (back-to-back 8k and full marathon. Qualified for Boston during the marathon). Running a 3:07 at the 2009 Boston Marathon.

What are you planning for next season?

Running the North Face Endurance Challenge's DC regional 50k; training to run a sub 18:30 5k in local races; hopefully running the New York Marathon, with the intention to break 2:55.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

Completing both legs of the 2006 Goofy's Challenge. Many said I wouldn't be able to finish the full marathon, never having experienced the distance, let alone competition in the 1/2 marathon, but I did. It was a painful, humbling experience, but gave me the confidence to continue pushing my own physical limits.

Q&A - Favorites

  • Favorite Car: Mini Cooper painted like the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard.
  • Favorite Magazine: Runner's World, VeloNews, the New Yorker.
  • Favorite Movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Favorite Trick: anything involving people jumping over stuff
  • Favorite Event: Participating: Boston Marathon; Spectating: any of the Spring Classics.
  • Favorite Rider: Brian Sell, Dave Zabriskie

Q&A - Personal

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Although I am completing an undergraduate degree with a focus in Art History at the Savannah College of Art and Design, with the eventual plan to to teach and complete Masters and PhD work in the field, an increasingly strong impulse has been pushing me towards the professional side of the endurance sport industry. While I'd love to compete at elite levels, a primary interest would, however, be to work the logistical/business side of sport and race marketing, administration, or athlete development. If these fall through, organic farming and brewing craft beer are backups.

Music?

Music is a huge part of my life. Despite this fact, I've only recently begun training with it. When out on the road, whether running or cycling, being able to maintain awareness of things going on around me, and the ability to focus on "mental conditioning", is really just as important as hammering out strong intervals or maintaining a tough tempo. That said, it's nice every now and then to run with the distraction (cycling with music in this area is mad dangerous). Groups of choice - The White Stripes, Aesop Rock, Girl Talk, Dropkick Murphys, Kraftwerk's Tour de France album, etc...

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Track-standing at a red light, starting to fall over, unable to clip-out, and eating shit after a hard 3 1/2 hour ride with fellow rider, drivers, and pedestrians all there to observe every horrible second.
