Old School Guys Dominate REM Glen Helen

(8/6)
(8/6/2007)

With track preparation in progress for the Glen Helen AMA National in one month, the REM racers are reaping the benefits of all the work. Not only was Mt. Whitney raised by five feet, but about three feet of fresh dirt was dropped on the normally rock-strewn downhill. All the track prep resulted in almost perfect dirt and, shockingly, the smoothest REM track in years. The  normally rough, choppy and whooped-out Glen Helen dirt stayed relatively smooth all day at the Billy Who-sponsored race.

Best known as for his Honda of Troy and Yamaha of Troy race teams, Phil Alderton (25) used to be an AMA Pro.

The end result of the inadvertent AMA “Smooth Track Concept” was a lot more crashes because the normal bumps weren’t there to slow the riders down as they entered REM’s tricky off camber corners. The higher cornering speeds increased the rider’s aggressiveness and resulted in crashes that injured Mark Hall, Kent Reed and Zapata Espinosa.

Jeff Loop (229) finished second in the 450 Pro class (although he and winner Tony Amaradio traded the lead several times).

First to bite the dust was MXA’s Zap Espinosa, who fell at the bottom of the downhill in the 40 Intermediate class while running third. Zap’s crash was not the problem, but when the rider behind him plowed into his leg, Zap suffered a dislocated hip (and earned an white limo ride to Arrowhead hospital).

The Over-40 Intermediate class was won by famous Yamaha of Troy owner Phil Alderton. Phil borrowed Swedish rider Bengt Johansson’s RM-Z450 and won both motos in front of Randy Skinner (3-2 on a 125), Mark Steel (2-3), Rick Richards (5-4), Mark Crosby (6-6), Cory Clark (4-8) and Mike Phillips (8-5).

Randy Skinner (yellow jersey), Zap Espinoza (red jersey) and Marc Crosby (blue jersey) were never more than this far apart in the Over-40 Intermediate class (at least until Zap fell).

The Over-40 Expert class fell to Phil Dowell’s 1-1 score. Dowell beat Steve Pfaff, Fred Nichols, Steve Watson, Tim Murphy, Paul Needels, Ken Ehlers, Mark Hall and Ed Foedish.

Greg Iorio used a steady 2-2 to take Over-40 Junior gold in front of Robbie Carpenter, Bobby Hunt, Mike Hillion, Doug Jardine and John Tookey.

The old-school guys continued their winning ways when 33-year-old Tony Amaradio took the 450 Pro class (19-year-old Jeff Loop was second), while 1987 AMA 125 West Supercross Champion Willie Surratt took the Vet Pro class. The Over-40 Master class was swept by Paul Kellen. The Over-50 Master class was another all-out war with Lightspeed owner Willie Amaradio’s 2-1 beating Dennis Boulware’s 1-4, Ken Ehlers’ 4-2, George Kohler’s 3-3, Jim Hoover’s 5-5 (Jim was on a 125), Lyle Sweeter’s 6-6 and Tom White’s 7-7. There were over 20 riders in the Over-50 class this weekend.

AS FOR THE YOUNGSTERS

Luca Nastrini won the 250F and 450 Junior classes.

Brett Lemaster took the 250 Intermediate win in front of Bryan Brimhall and Bruce Rutherford.

Rutherford came back to win the 450 Intermediate class.

The Beginner winners were Chris Mattson (Vet), Chris Frank (450), Jerry Olivas (250F), Clayton Riechard (125 two-stroke) and Walker Harrison (85).

Ed Foedish (326) drove in from Arizona to race at REM. He and Mark Hall both raced two classes.
