Q&A - Personal
Some Personal Information About Me:
I grew up in Columbus Ohio for 20 years before joining the Army in 2004. After the Army brought me to the Pacific Northwest I decided to stay and start a new life here. I bought a 2005 GSXR 750 as my first street bike. Needless to say, I instantly found myself addicted to the adrenaline rush of screwing on a lot of throttle. A friend of mine talked me into going to a track day at Portland International, and ever since, my passion for racing has been going strong. I now compete in the WERA cirucuit working on my skills and overall experience to build my future as a competitor in the AMA.
Why do you compete?
I believe that there are two kinds of people in this world. Some are content with watching other people do the "crazy" and "insane" things that they love. Then there are others who are not happy unless they're going so fast their hair catches on fire. I'm not a spectator. I love being in the mix of the craziness and high speed competition that encompasses road racing. Racing is my life's passion. It incorporates everything that fits my personality. High speed and adrenaline, split second reaction, superfast decision making, close proximity competetion, mental toughness, all with a very small margin for error. I compete because it makes me push my limits and the limits of this world...and nothing can make you feel more alive than that.
What inspires you to compete?
As I was growing up as a kid, I always found myself needing to be better and beat the other guy. I would practice everything I did to be the best. Now as a road racer, things haven't changed. I still need to beat the other guy...I need to be the best.
Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
I train six days a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday I take a cycling class to increase my leg endurance and my cardiovascular efficiency. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I weight train with low weigh and high rep to improve my muscle endurance and stregnth. I maintain a careful diet to maintain a low body fat percentage due to my physical size of 6'4", I can't afford to be bulky.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarrassing moment was when I was late for my novice group class. It must have been my third time ever on the track. I came to a screeching halt at the gate until the girl with the big headphones waved me through and amusingly reminded me that I was late. I came to the access road and decided that it would be a good idea to crack open the throttle. Turns out that it was NOT a good idea. Cold tires and excessive throttle, um, well make you look like an idiot. My back end slid way left, I chopped throttle, and it nearly high sided me. The hand of God must have been holding onto my bike out of sheer pity for my stupidity. As my heart began to beat again, I quickly slowed way down and drove on hearing the distinct sound of people laughing at me as I rode away.
