National FMF Two-Stroke Invitational MX race at Budd's Creek Aug. 22, 2009.

MX Sports announced new classes for 2009 for the AMA Nationals at Loretta Lynn's and it includes a 50 plus Masters class!
I have been privileged to make two Loretta Lynn Nationals races and I thought that was it for me. But no! I have another shot and will take it but qualifying for the 2009 50 plus Masters class. I cannot wait to go back again with my 50 plus buddies and race again at a National. I am one lucky kid! I plan to race on my  Champion Cycle of Covington,  Solva suspension, Twin Air Filter, Pro-Circuit exhaust, KTM 250 SX set up for full power,  if I can learn to master all that horsepower.  I have raced it detuned in the past but I want that holeshot at LL and that motor can do it. With my mentor and teacher Trampas Chad Parker, hopefully I will find a way to do so and do well at LL. At 56 yrs. old, any race may be your last, so I will really relish this one. With the full support of my  fantastic wife Erika and little Elena there, I can't lose. Another adventure unfolds!!!!

I was not allowed to race in the FIM World Veterans race in 2008 due to a rule change and age limit of 55. Like is cruel at times. I had prepared a new bike with works Solva Suspension. I helped Trampas Chad Parker, ex-two time world FIM MX Champion built a new track and school for future champions. I was practicing 2-3 times a week and practicing law. This was going to be my moment in 2008 at Bellpuig! Then I learned of the rule change. Instead of racing I decided to do something to help others. I met with Chuck Sun at Glen Helen in Nov. 2007. We discussed his racing in the FIM World Veterans Series in 2008 and I would help make sure he would not be disqualified like last year. I was the first American to race the FIM Veterans series and he would be the second to race it and the first to get on the podium. CAS Honda of the UK supplied a bike we would modify with works Ohlins suspension and a R&D Float bowl so it did not cough on the 150 ft. downhill jump.  There was a drough. It rained and rained for the race. We got to work with Billie McKenzie and Mike Brown of Team CAS Honda. We had problems but,  got two holeshots on a stock motor.  Chucks goggle system failed in the muddiest race in FIM history. The MX1's refused to race the second moto after the Veterans raced. Chuck Sun got 12th out of 50 in the second moto. There was a 50 rider waiting list. Chuck qualified and got FIM points. Thanks to CAS Honda!!! Some pics are posted. On to Mallory Park!  Next year I have the honor to help 3 MX greats race the FIM World Veterans series. The USA will win that cup in 2008 or 2009!! I feel like Edison Dye in reverse.  Dye brough Joel Roberts and Rodger DeCoster over to America. I am bringing Chuck Sun, Trampas Parker and hopefully Dr. D, Doug Dubach over next year to win the FIM World Veterans Cup for the USA. I know the FIM rules and have raced the unique series so I have some knowledge of the rules and racing on these tough tracks. It is different than AMA racing for sure---and wonderful. Disc jockeys beat out music at the track to Euro techno music. They played "Don' Worry Be Happy" as the pits filled with water and rain fell on the riders getting ready to take off in a lake in the straight of way at the track. It was surreal. Beautiful women were everywhere as usual. The fans were marvelous in Spain. We navigated and survived with our limited Spanish. We did not crash our RV-(okay that getting stuck under a underpass does not count!!!)  And Chuck got FIM points and a 12th out of 30 and qualified. Life is strange. I grew up in the New Orleans 9th ward riding on the levees. Getting chased periodically by Levee Board police for riding on the levees and hurting the grass. It made me learn how to jump off 16 ft. levees with 7/4 inches of suspension in 1972.  The 9th ward is destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. I am living in adjacent Metairie. And I end up in the FIM MX races as the first American to race the series and helping Chuck Sun, my hero, race there. I am one lucky little boy.

Thanks to my beautiful Hungarian wife Erika for supporting my obsession and dream. Thanks to Trampas Parker, Solva Suspension, Champion Cycle of Covington, Twin Air Airfilters, UFO, Scott Goggles, David Redman my friend who drove me to customs in Atlanta too many times.

Look at the FIM video clips of the carnage/race at www.chucksun.com. Look at the www.trampasparkermxs.com site on an exciting facility and my mentor who was just admitted to the AMA Hall of Fame. Look at www.glenn-mcgovern.com and click on the motocross facility section to see exciting news on my work to help Hungary get a FIM World MX Championship race at www.Dirtpark.hu facility.

I went alone with 7 gear boxes of gear and parts to race the Donington Park British GP World Veterans Class races. It was unbelievable. The jumps were like an American Supercross track. Very un-euro. Very steep faced. I had a plethora of problems but marched on. My mechanic bailed on me at the last minute. I had to lug all my parts myself and wash my bike ect. It was rough. I got a 20th place first moto and a 18th place second moto. A local racer Jason came to help me on Sunday's race. He reset the suspension and that made a huge difference. The tracks over there are really rough. Petrol (gasoline prices are really high $10 a gallon, so there is little or no track preparation (except overwatering) during a motocross there. They mixed in sawdust and wood chips and it was like oatmeal with oil in it. One rider broke his leg on the first jump. We had no sight laps. I had stock KTM suspension. I was the only one with stock suspension. Everyone had Ohlins, WPS Hard Parts reworked, or special Showa suspensions. Despite that, I did not finish last nor break any body parts!!! I finished, I rode my heart out, and I got some offers of sponsorship for next years three race series in CZ, Belgium and Great Britain. I am already planning and changing my training for these very tough tracks. Where else can you race with Pichon's dad? Where else can you chat with Mike Brown and Stephan Everts? I am still in awe. Thanks to Racing Innovations, Universal, M2R, especially Twin-Air, Champion Cycle and Decal Works/SoCal for all your help and confidence in me. Racing 4000 miles from home out of 7 cases is not the way to go, but I had no choice to get there. No regrets. I look forward to next year after the White Brothers World Veterans Championships in Nov. I will learn from my mistakes and improve. Look out Namur!!!!

No. 30 World FIM Veteran Racer

The FIM/Youthstream released the entry list for the 2nd race of the FIM World Veterans MX Series at Donington Park, Great Britain on Aug. 25-26. I am on the list and officially entered!!!! I am so excited. Adrian Pichon will be there, on a Michael Pichon KTM prepared bike. US legend Senior racer formerly retired Chuck Sun is coming to race in the Senior Class on a works CAS 450 Honda. Very exciting. This is an totally new track. I hope it is finished now. I made some calls to a local and supposedly it was described as "supercrossish" what ever that means to a British MX'er. I am honored to be able to be allowed to race there. I think the most dangerous part will be driving on the left side of the road with a left shift Ford Turbo Diesel Transit Van, although they are really nice vehicles. I wish they sold them here with the good mileage ans space they have. I will be racing the KTM and have a full set of front and rear sprockets ready for anything. It is daunting to go and race 3600 nm away with no support but I am looking forward to the adventure of taking the journey. They expect 40,000 to 50,000 fans for this race. The Veterans race is on Eurosport TV and some other channels over there only but not www.mediazone.com. I am the only American entered in the Veterans Class again. I am only the second person from Louisiana state to race in a European FIM Grnad Prix besides Trampas Parker who won two world MX chamionships years ago. Dealing with 4 overweight cases of gear will be a challenge as usual, down from my 7 cases last trip. I'm learning but this is really a hard thing to race logistically. I still do not have the bike shipment confirmed to the hotel and back home. Gotta have faith or you will go crazy on these trips! I am the luckiest little boy mx'er in the USA (even at 55 yrs. of age!).

Preparations are being made for the second race at Donington Park for which I am entered. Confirmation of riders is only a week before so nothing is certain, but I have faith I will be allowed to race the track being built there. The race is Aug. 24-26 and the bike is already there waiting for me to return and unpack it again.
I look foward to a good race at Donington Park. Driving on the left with left wheeled large Mercedes Sprinter Van is scary, but I will get there to the race no matter what it takes. At least I speak the language there!

I entered and raced a Namur. It was an unbelievable experience. Racing in Europe is a real challenge. This track is tough!! Nothing compares in America. Being the first American to enter, I was noticed. Getting the bike through Belgian Customs took over 6 hrs. and was a problem. My not speaking French was also a problem. I really was not fully functional without any support staff except for my fantastic multi-lingual wife Erika and newborn Elena who accompanied me. Namur was beautiful. The riders, the Everts, the Pichons, were great to race with and talk to. In Belgium, motocross is a family sport and almost a religion. It is not about money. It is about the sport. It is pure there. I really like that. I think we have lost that in some MX series in America. Pulling this off was one of the toughest things I have ever undertaken but it was worth it. I just wish I could have more gear, a motorhome to sleep in, a mechanic, a suspension specialists and a chiropractor with me like the pro riders have. But, I am glad to just be a part of it. Merci Namur, Youthstream, and FIM!!!
