Why do you like this sport?
It's not always for the gold, for the title, or for the score. Just being out on the water, swerving, can be the most satisfactory feeling ever. It's a complete release from anything outside your little bubble, but at the same time, gives you the most amazing adrenalin rush.
What inspires you to compete?
I absolutely LOVE how much I get to travel, and the places that I get to travel to. I meet the most amazing people, from all over the world. Everytime I win an event or get a good ranking score, it just gives me more drive to want to do better. I then know that it is possible. If I can get around 2 ball, what is stopping me from getting around 4 ball? What is stopping me from running the pass? Nothing.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I picture my base to be in Florida, skiing the pro circuit...
Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
Summers in South Africa I'm up at 5am, in the water by 5:45am, do two sets, then rush off to school. Every weekend in SA is spent out on our farm for a weekend of solid skiing. South African winters are usually spent in Florida (Northern Hemisphere summer) where I train from monday to thursday/friday, and compete every weekend. It gets pretty intense...
Why do you compete?
To prove to myself that it is all possible. I can run into shortline, I can use my nerves to my advantage, and I can beat people who are higher than me on the ranking list. It shouldnt be about anyone else out there, just you. If you're doing it for someone else, you've missed the point of the sport.
