Bike Equipment That I Love (And Use Too)

- Bikes -
Haro Bikes - I've loved these guys since I was a kid and now that I've been a gainfully employed grown-up, I have both a cruiser and a 20"er.  Now I'm drooling over their Freestyle Master 30th anniversary reissue!

Giant Bikes - When I was a little grom (OK, maybe I've never been little) I used to think that handmade Italian race bikes and California mountain bikes were the way to go, but I got turned on to this company in 2004 when I got back into cycling and have fallen head over heels for them.  DJ and DH bikes, road, cyclocross and TT - aluminum, carbon fiber and their alliance (carbon/aluminum hybrid) frames - I love them all.

My Fuji Track Pro - OK, one of two bikes that aren't made by Haro or Giant.  Wicked fast and super beefy.  Plus, it's red - the fastest color.

My Zoo! Pitbull trials bike - haven't spent as much time on this thing as I'd like to yet, but it's taught me a thing or two about bike handling.

- Bike Parts -
ODI Lock-On Grips.  I've never had an issue with these grips and have been using them for years on my mountain bikes and now my BMX bikes.  Complete awesomeness.

LIPZ Number Plates.  They did an awesome job making my custom number plates this year.  I hope to continue working with them in the future - can't wait to see what they come up with!

Sinz Carbon Stealth BMX Forks (got one for my cruiser in 2008 and will get one for my 20incher for 2009), cranks and brakes.

Marzocchi Suspension Forks - Dweamy.  Totally, unadulterated dweamyness.  Need I say more?  Nope.

Race Face MTB Cranks
FSA Road Cranks (compacts please)
Hayes Hydraulic Disc Brakes
MRP Chain Guides
Fi'zi:k Saddles
Shimano Pedals
Kenda Tires
Sun/Ringle Hubs and Rims
Ergomo Power Meter

- Protection and Apparel -
FIrst and foremost Sock Guy Socks.  By now everyone expects that I've got some cool pair of socks on at any given moment (I even wear the dark colored ones to work as "dressy" socks).  These folks know how to make a bomber sock with great graphics and funny phrases.

Steel MX Optics.  Great googles, great sunglasses.  I've been really happy with the styling and how well constructed they are.  It''l soon be time to get a pair of snow goggles next...

Giro Helmets (Road, TT, MTB, Full Face, Skate Lid - they all ROCK!)
Answer MX gear (pants, shorts, jerseys and gloves)
DeSoto triathlon shorts (which I also wear under my BMX and DH gear)
Orca Triathlon wetsuits
661 Pro Pressure Suit
Lizard Skins Knee/Shin Pads

Q&A - Competition

How did you get started?

I got tired of being 400 pounds (or darn near anyway). Started doing sprint triathlons and re-learned how much I love cycling and playing in the dirt.

List your competitive highlights:

Participating in the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Half Marathon in 2007. With a starting field of over 20,000 runners, that might be the only way for me to come in ahead of 1100 other runners... Also, qualifying for the Redline Cup in 2007 was a great day of racing and introducing my niece to the awesome sport of BMX.

What are you planning for next season?

For 2009, lots of BMX, DH, DS and Cyclocross. Plus there are a few off-road Xterra Triathlons that I would like to do. And if I don't chicken out, finish the season with a half-iron distance triathlon. Needless to say, my butt won't be too far from a bike seat this year...

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

My first century (100 mile) bike ride in October of 2006. With help from family and friends, I raised over $11,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since 2005, I've helped raise almost $20,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Q&A - Personal

Why do you like this sport?

Like most cycling sports that are based on dirt, rocks and no paved roads, the people are my favorite thing. Everyone is friendly and encouraging as we line up for a start, 45 seconds of business and then we're all friends again.

What inspires you to compete?

For BMX, I'd have to say that it's all about having fun. My endurance sport stuff I do as fund raising events for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Describe your style...

Style? Me? If not having a style is having a style, then that would be my non-style style...

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Good grief, I hope that I never grow up. My mom turned 60 in 2007 and she's the least grown-up, grown-up I know. I expect that being an eternal kid on some level will help me live a long, full life.

Music?

Depends on my mood. From smooth Jazz or acoustic folky stuff one minute, to the heaviest rock you can come up with the next. I listen to just about anything.
