ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS (ASP) INTERNATIONAL
Rip Curl Womens Pro Bells Beach Stop No 2. of 7 on the 2007 ASP Women's World Tour Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia April 3-8, 2007
RIP CURL WOMEN'S PRO BACK AT BELLS BEACH NEXT WEEK
BELLS BEACH, Australia (Friday, Mar. 30, 2007) The second stop on the ASP Womens World Tour, the Rip Curl Womens Pro at Bells Beach, will see the events triumphant return to the ASP calendar after a 2006 absence.
Running from April 3-8, 2007, the Rip Curl Womens Pro can be completed in two full days of surfing. It will run in tandem with the mens division of the Rip Curl Pro which takes four days to run and has a waiting period that stretches an additional five days until April 13, 2007.
Though an ASP Womens World Tour event was held at Bells Beach in 2005, the venue hasnt enjoyed a cemented spot on the ASP calendar since 2001. Only six of the current Top 17 were elite tour competitors at that time.
Defending Rip Curl Pro Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER) will join three-time Bells Beach victor Layne Beachley (AUS) and 2000 event champion Megan Abubo (HAW) as the only surfers competing in the 22nd installment of womens competition at Bells with wins to their credit.
Several girls will be surfing Bells Beach as elite-tour competitors for the first time.
Despite making their World Tour debuts there next week, competitors like ASP Womens World Tour rookie Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and second-year tourer Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS) are likely to have logged more time at the break than many of their cohorts courtesy of national junior competitions.
I love Bells, Miley-Dyer said. Ive been surfing it since I was a kid and watching goofy-footers like Damian Hardman and Occy tearing the place apart when the Rip Curl Pro was on. Im stoked that we have a comp there and I can finally pretend to be them!
Miley-Dyer will meet Hawaiis Megan Abubo and Brazils Jacqueline Silva in Heat 6 of Round 1.
Gilmore has drawn fellow rookie Caroline Sarran (FRA) and Rebecca Woods (AUS) in Round 1. The surfers finishing first and second in Round 1 advance straight to Round 3. The surfer finishing third in Round 1 has to surf Round 2 and risk elimination.
I think it always helps to get some quality time in before the comp starts, Gilmore said. Lucky for me Ive done a few years of pro junior events at Bells leading up to qualifying. That and I tend to like any right hander really.
Gilmore won two ASP Womens World Tour events as a wildcard before qualifying for this years tour, and as such, will not underestimate how far a surfer free from the pressure of ratings points and expectations can go.
The Rip Curl Womens Pro Wildcard has been awarded to local surfer and four-time Victoria state champ Amy Stewart (AUS). The 20-year-old natural-footer hails from Jan Juc and will have a home-break advantage not enjoyed by anyone else in the draw.
"Its a tricky but fun wave when you get it down, Stewart said. Its only up the road from me so Ive spent a fair bit of time out there.
Stewart will draw current World No. 1 Chelsea Hedges (AUS) and Samantha Cornish (AUS) in Heat 3 of Round 1 when the Rip Curl Womens Pro commences.

In addition to this Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) four-star event taking place April 24-28, 2007, Lower Trestles will also host the Oakley Pro Junior from April 27-28, 2007. This five-day world-class surfing event will feature top-tier professional surfers, local surf hopefuls, domestic and international junior competitors and supporters of the renowned Trestles break.
Touted as one of the most impressive ASP WQS events of the season, the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout features 192 of the worlds best surfers battling for a $75,000 prize purse and valuable ASP WQS points.
In the Surfbouts 15-year history, past winners have included eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, FL), three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (Hanalei, HI), local Southern California stars Rob Machado (Cardiff, CA), Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA) and Shane Beschen (San Clemente, CA), and Surfbouts 2006 winner, Hawaiis Dustin Cuizon (Ewa Beach, HI).
Body Glove International is proud to bring the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout back to Lower Trestles, Scott Daley, VP of marketing for Body Glove, said. Trestles not only offers some of the best waves in America, but Surfbout gives American surfers an opportunity to earn valuable ASP WQS points. This will be the 15th Surfbout, so all of you young American pros, lets see what youve got!
This year, in an effort to continue the growth of the Macys California Trifecta events, ASG along with partner Jeep, have added an all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot to the Macys California Trifecta prizing in addition to a $20,000 total cash purse to add to the level of excitement at each event.
The Macys California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep (an ASP North America Specialty Series) was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout, the Newport Pro presented by Jeep, and the ONeill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep under one banner.
The Macys California Trifecta Surf Series provides surfers with an opportunity to earn crucial points on the ASP WQS, which allows them the chance of advancing to the coveted Fosters ASP World Tour. The Macys California Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus and an all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot to the surfer who takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Macys California Trifecta awards an overall points-winner bonus and the all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot while juniors will vie for an additional $5,000.
In 2006, Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) had a tremendous year and was awarded $10,000 for winning the Macys California Trifecta points bonus, narrowly beating out Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA) at the stops final event, the ONeill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep.
We had a great points race going into the Cold Water Classic last year and we are excited to bring this opportunity back to American surfers. It all starts at the Surfbout, and with over $200,000 in cash and prizes on the line this year were looking forward to seeing another dramatic finish to the 07 season, Sean Nielsen, ASGs director of event operations, said.
The 2007 Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout is happy to once again have support from Oakley, Ocean Minded, PRIMEDIAs Action Sports Group (ASG), publisher of SURFER, SURFING and WaveWatch, and the SC Times and FUEL TV.
For surfing enthusiasts who cant make it to Trestles, starting Apr. 25, all of the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout action will be viewable online with streaming video and live scoring at www.aspnorthamerica.org and www.surfbout.com.
All the action begins at 8am on Apr. 24, 2007.

Oakley Pro Junior Lowers Event No. 4 on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series (Men) San Clemente, California, United States of America April 24-28, 2007
JEEP-BODY GLOVE SURFBOUT RETURNS TO WORLD FAMOUS LOWER TRESTLES SAN CLEMENTE, California (Wednesday, Mar. 28, 2007) PRIMEDIA's Action Sports Group (ASG) is pleased to announce the return of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior to Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif., Apr. 27 and 28, 2007.
Held in conjunction with the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout, the event is the first stop of the Macys California Trifecta Surf Series (an ASP North America Specialty Series) and boasts a $10,000 prize purse for the juniors, as well as an additional $5,000 purse and points bonus for the top points winner for the series. 32 of the leading American and international surfers under the age of 20 will compete for the cash and valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the annual ASP Billabong World Junior Championships.
The 2007 Oakley Pro Junior series is a crucial event for Americas top junior professionals vying for a seed into the ASP World Junior Championships, Ronny Nelson, surf marketing manager, Oakley, Inc., said. Now with a Trifecta bonus and increase grade rating for the ASP North American Championships therere more points available for our juniors and good money on the line for both domestic and international competitors. Oakley is stoked we can help grow the opportunities for the future of the sport.
The Oakley Pro Junior series provides an opportunity for the top junior surfers in the world to compete against each other at the best venues the U.S. mainland has to offer, Sean Nielsen, director of event operations, Action Sports Group, said. The level of competition is already amazing and with the addition of the junior division to the Macys California Trifecta and Grade increase, we are looking forward to a very competitive start to the series at the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout.
Aligning the top-rated international junior competitors against the highest-rated ASP North American juniors, the Oakley Pro Juniors small field and competitive draw demands each surfer perform at the top of his ability. There are 12 ASP North America Pro Junior events scheduled in 2007, three of which are part of the Oakley Pro Junior Series. Each event offers the domestic competitors important points toward the year-end standings and a chance to receive entry into the ASP North American Championships which plays a key factor in deciding who will go on to the 2008 Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.
The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships has crowned past champions such as Fosters ASP World Tour pros Joel Parkinson (AUS), Andy Irons (HAW), Adriano de Souza (BRA) as well as reigning ASP World Junior Champ Jordy Smith (ZAF).
Last year, Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL) won the kick-off Oakley Pro Junior event at Lower Trestles and went on to lead the points race for the remainder of the ASP North America Junior Series. Coming off a win at the Ezekiel Pro Junior, which ran in conjunction with the Vans Pier Classic, this past weekend in Huntington Beach, Geiselman will no doubt return to Trestles this year to try to defend his title and once again chase the crucial points needed to make it to the ASP World Junior Championships.
Last year went really well for me and I won the first two Pro Junior events on the west coast, Geiselman said. Since last year, Ive really focused on being more explosive in my surfing. Ive got some great boards under my feet from my Dad (Orion Surfboards), and Im feeling really good coming off of last weeks win in Huntington. Im not claiming anything for this year; Im just trying to be consistent. Im really looking forward to competing again at Lowers.
Following Trestles, the second stop of the series will be the ASP Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior, September 18-23, 2007, at Newport Beachs renowned 56th Street break in conjunction with the ASP WQS 2-star Newport Beach Pro presented by Jeep. The series will conclude with the ASP Grade 3 Oakley Pro Junior Championships at the 2007 ONeill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, Calif., October 9-14, 2007.
All the action begins at 8am on Apr. 24, 2007 at Lower Trestles.

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Stop No 2. of 10 on the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia April 3 - 13, 2007
SLATER RARING TO RING THE BELL AT THE RIP CURL PRO BELLS BEACH
BELLS BEACH, Australia (Wednesday, Mar. 28, 2007) Despite surfing incredibly consistently and securing his record eighth Fosters ASP World Title with two events to spare in 2006, Kelly Slater (USA) has not won an elite tour event since the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach last year.
Slater beat former Rip Curl Pro champion Joel Parkinson (AUS) in the 2006 event final to tie Tom Curren (USA) for the most elite tour events won by single surfer. Both Curren and Slater have 33 event titles to their credit at present.
It seems strange that I havent had a win since Bells and that it has been a full year since I won an event, because I had such a great year last year, Slater said. I made a couple of finals and had a few thirds but I think I may have been suffering from a mental block about passing Toms event win record. Its been on weighing on my mind and maybe if I could have put that to bed it would have freed me up to clinch a couple more wins last year.
The ASP event wins record is one of the only accolades in professional surfing that Slater does not own outright. He is hoping to change that when the Fosters ASP World Tour heads to Torquay, Australia for the 35th Annual Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach next week.
I would love to have a win at Bells, Slater said. In a way it would be more meaningful to win my 34th there, just because Tom is so synonymous with Rip Curl and Bells Beach in general. I was hoping to put [the record] to rest at Trestles last year because Tom and I both won our first professional events there and I thought that would have been pretty ironic, but it would be special to do it in Torquay too.
Adding to the history and prestige of Australias longest running surf event, will be the attendance of several surfing icons synonymous with the event and the sport.
I just turned 35 last month and its the 35th anniversary of the Rip Curl Pro, so Bells and I are sort of in alignment right now, Slater joked. It hasnt been one of my better events on tour, but with Tom and some of the other greats presence there for the anniversary celebrations, if I could for some reason pull off a win it would be pretty special.
Slater will face rest of the Fosters 45, wildcards Owen Wright (AUS) and Matt Wilkinson (AUS) and the winner of the Victoria Place To Be Trials (who will earn the third and final wildcard) when competition commences next week.
The Rip Curl Pro waiting period starts Tuesday, Apr. 3 and stretches until Apr. 13. Stop 2 of the ASP Womens World Tour, the Rip Curl Womens Pro Bells Beach, will run in tandem with the Foster's ASP World Tour event.

Macys California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep Body Glove Surfbout at Lowers featuring Oakley Pro Junior Apr. 24-28, 2007 Newport Beach Pro pres. by Jeep featuring Oakley Pro Junior Sep. 18-23, 2007 ONeill Coldwater Classic featuring Oakley Pro Junior Oct. 9-14, 2007
ALL-NEW JEEP® PATRIOT ON THE LINE FOR 2007 MACYS CALIFORNIA TRIFECTA WINNERS HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Monday, Mar. 26, 2007) With a continuing commitment to grow professional surfing in America, PRIMEDIAs Action Sports Group (ASG) is pleased to announce upgrades for the 2007 Macys California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep®. New for 2007, the series will award an all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot to the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America World Qualifying Series (WQS) prize package and an additional $5,000 prize purse to the Oakley Pro Junior division to reward top performance within the three events. The Macys California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep, is the first series of its kind on the west coast and unites three ASP North American events held at Californias premier competition venues; the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout, the Newport Pro presented by Jeep and the ONeill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep, held in conjunction with the Oakley Pro Junior series. Now in its third year, the Macys California Trifecta Series will offer a cumulative prize purse of more than $200,000 in cash and prizes to competitors surfing on the ASP North American Tour. A grand prize of $33,333 and an all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot will be awarded as a bonus should one ASP WQS surfer take first-place in each of the three contests. However, making the 2007 series unique, the Macys California Trifecta will also offer over $30,000 to the overall ASP WQS point leader, as well as the Oakley Pro Junior divisions, in the event that no single surfer wins all three contests. Specifically, ASP WQS competitors will battle it out for $15,000 in cash and an all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot while juniors will vie for an additional $5,000. The enhanced Macys California Trifecta prize offering is very exciting for pro surfing in America, Sean Nielsen, Action Sports Group, director of event operations said. Macys, Jeep and our endemic family of brands supporting the Series are making it possible for us to provide more opportunities to the surfers competing on the ASP North American WQS and World Pro Junior Series. There is a lot on the line this year and we look forward to seeing who emerges as champions. Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), last years Macys California Trifecta Champion, was on the fence about whether or not to compete in this seasons events until he heard about the boost in the prize purse. I wasnt planning on doing the Lowers event, because I was going to Scotland, and I wasnt sure if I was going to do Santa Cruz either, Yeomans said. But now that the prize purse has been upped, I think I am going to do the series and try to defend my title. Last seasons race for the Macys California Trifecta title came down to the wire in a stunning display of professionalism at the series final event, the ONeill Cold Water Classic. With three contenders in the running, it was Yeomans who staged a come-from-behind victory over Dustin Cuizon (Ewa Beach, HI) and staved off the onslaught from Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA) Going into the final event, I was trying not to think about it too much, Yeomans said. Once Dustin (Cuizon) went down, I knew I had a chance, but I had no idea how close Nathaniel (Curran) was to clinching it. It was one of my goals going into last year and I was stoked to get it. Kicking off the Macys California Trifecta Surf Series, the ASP WQS four-star Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout and ASP Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior will be held at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, on April 24-28, 2007. Lower Trestles is considered to be one of the best competition waves in the world and a jewel of southern California. The second stop of the Macys California Trifecta will be the storied ASP WQS two-star Newport Beach Pro presented by Jeep and ASP Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior, on September 18-23, 2007, at Newports renowned 56th Street break. A pivotal stop of the Macys California Trifecta Series, the event is rich in history bringing together amateur and professional competitions. Santa Cruzs famed Steamer Lane will play host to the third and final stop of the Macys California Trifecta, for the ASP WQS four-star ONeill Cold Water Classic and ASP Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior and ASP North American Championships, on October 9-14, 2007. Northern Californias preeminent surfing event is also the final professional surfing event on the United States mainland in 2007. In addition to Macys and Jeep, the Macys California Trifecta Surf Series is also supported by Surfer magazine, Surfing magazine, WaveWatch, ASP North America and FUEL TV.
The first event in the Macys California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep will be the Body Glove Surfbout at Lowers from Apr. 24-28, 2007.

Vans Pier Classic presented by Jacks Surfboards featuring the Ezekiel Pro Junior Event No. 2 on the 2007 ASP North WQS Tour (Men) Event No. 1 on the 2007 ASP North America WQS Tour (Women) Event No. 2 on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series (Men) Huntington Beach, California, United States of America March 21-25, 2007
LOCAL BOY MICAH BYRNE WINS VANS PIER CLASSIC AT HUNTINGTON BEACH HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Sunday, Mar. 25, 2007) Repeat Vans Pier Classic finalist Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA) scored a sensational win over fellow local Michael Hoisington (Huntington Beach, CA), prodigious junior Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL) and Federico Pilurzu (Tamarindo, CRI) to claim the 2007 Vans Pier Classic presented by Jacks Surfboards Title.
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-Star event culminated a weeks worth of action today that saw the men, women and junior men all lift their respective games as they charged towards the winners dais.
Byrne, who was also moonlighting as the official webcast commentator for the Vans Pier Classic, opened the final up solid at his home break blasting away at the shifty afternoon peaks. The progressive natural-footer locked in an excellent 8.25 followed by a 5.75 to jump out to an early lead which he held onto claiming his first ASP WQS victory.
It was a long week, Byrne said. Im so stoked right now Im really pumped. I opened up with a pretty good left. I got lucky and it had a really nice section to throw down on for an 8.25. I thought for sure that Hoisington and Pilurzu were going to get the scores they needed. Fortunately the waves went kind of bunk and I didnt need to get another solid score.
Byrne, who finished third at last seasons Vans Pier Classic, was one of the favored surfers going into the event, and this years victory was made doubly-sweet in front of the hometown crowd.
It was my goal to finish better than I did last year and I knew that was going to be pretty hard since I finished third, Byrne said. Ive got a new board sponsor in the last few weeks Steve Boysen and the boards have been going really well. I had a pretty bad knee injury a couple months back, but that feels a lot better now today was actually the first day I surfed without my knee brace. I just felt really good and Im so rapt with this win.
Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, CA) surfed brilliantly all week in both the Vans Pier Classic and the Ezekiel Pro Junior. Surfing double-duty on the final day, Geiselman advanced all the way through to both finals, often surfing back-to-back-heats.
Im pretty exhausted, Geiselman said. I think I ended up surfing six heats today so Im pretty beat. Everything felt really well all event. The boards that my Dad (Orion Surfboards) has been shaping me have been going insane. I just couldnt put it together in the mens final, but Im happy with my result and Im looking forward to the next one.
Geiselman, who was last seasons ASP North America Pro Junior Champion, scored a sensational come-from-behind victory to claim the Ezekiel Pro Junior title from fellow finalists Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA), Travis Beckmann (Vero Beach, FL) and Chad Compton (Ventura, CA). With less than three minutes left, Geiselman snuck in a solid righthander to steal the win away from Waring who had led all heat.
I wasnt sure if I was going to get that score there at the end, but that wave came to me right when I needed it, Geiselman said. Im stoked to get back on the podium. The waves were pretty small at the last event, and I was just really happy we had waves here. Im looking for another consistent season both at the Pro Junior and WQS level.
Travis Beckmann (Vero Beach, FL), who finished runner-up at the Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior earlier this month, has taken over the ratings lead from Tommy Bursian (San Juan, PRI) in the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series with his 3rd-place finish in the Ezekiel Pro Junior.
Im psyching what an incredible way to start the year two events and two finals, Beckmann said. Ive never been so consistent in my entire life. The ASP World Junior Championships are a guarantee I definitely want to get there. Ive never been to Australia and to get there on my own merit would be amazing. The next Pro Junior is in Cocoa Beach, which is another stomping ground of mine so Im hoping for another big result.
Ornella Pellizari (Mar de Plata, ARG) caused a sensational upset in defeating in-form Americans Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA), Sage Erickson (Oxnard, CA) and Christa Alves (Cocoa Beach, FL) to claim the Vans Womens Pier Classic title. Surfing without a sponsor, the 19-year old smashed the tricky afternoon righthanders to victory in her maiden ASP WQS event.
The plan is to do some of the WQS events this season and hopefully do the whole tour next year, Pellizari said. This is my first WQS event ever and my second ASP event. I did a Pro Junior in Florida and now this. I am so happy to win here and it is a great result and honor.
Conlogue looked the form surfer of the event, even locking in the events only perfect 10-point ride in the Semifinals, but was unable to push past Pellizari.
It was just difficult to find waves out there this afternoon, Conlogue said. Everything felt pretty good my boards and everything but I just couldnt find the waves. Ornella surfed really well. Im still happy with my performance, but would have liked a win.
The next event on the 2007 ASP North America Tour will be the Lost Easter Pro Junior (ASP Grade- 1) at Cocoa Beach from Apr. 6-8, 2007. Following that will be the Body Glove Surfbout at Lowers (ASP WQS 4-Star) from Apr. 24-28, 2007 featuring the Oakley Pro Junior (ASP Grade-2).

ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS (ASP) NORTH AMERICA
Vans Pier Classic presented by Jacks Surfboards featuring the Ezekiel Pro Junior Event No. 2 on the 2007 ASP North WQS Tour (Men) Event No. 1 on the 2007 ASP North America WQS Tour (Women) Event No. 2 on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series (Men) Huntington Beach, California, United States of America March 21-25, 2007
COMPETITION HEATS UP AT BUSINESS END OF VANS PIER CLASSIC HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Saturday, Mar. 24, 2007) Round 5 of the Vans Pier Classic presented by Jacks Surfboards along with Spy Optics saw local fixtures and perennial threats dominate the glassy 2 to 4 foot (0.6-1.2 metre) peaks at Huntington Beach Pier today.
The field was further narrowed down to 16 in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-Star event as Round 5 showcased some of the most explosive surfing of the event so far.
Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), last years ASP North America Pro Junior Champion, went ballistic in his Vans Pier Classic heat, netting the highest heat total of the day, a 16.50 out of a possible 20. Wasting little time, Geiselman opened up with a massive 360-degree aerial reverse to grab a 7.25 out of a possible 10 and put the pressure on his opponents.
Ive just been trying to bring a little more of that freesurfing aspect into my heats, Geiselman said. Im still out there to win and get the scores, but Im trying to be a little bit more unpredictable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, but explosiveness is definitely what is needed to move to the next level.
With a strong lead throughout the heat, Geiselman hammered the nail in the coffin with a 9.25 out of a possible 10 for a series of fin-free maneuvers and full rail carving on his forehand. The score matches the highest of the event thus far, the first collected by his younger brother Evan in the Round of 160.
The waves are so much fun and they are just coming in all over the place, Geiselman said. Ive got some really good boards from my Dad (Orion surfboards) and Ive just been feeling really good. Im hoping for a result here to get the ball rolling competitively this season.
Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), the only remaining finalist from last years Vans Pier Classic, continued his domination at the venue, smashing the mid-morning righthanders on his forehand. The stylish natural-footer led a strong contingent of local surfers advancing through to the Quarterfinals alongside HB rippers Brad Ettinger, Michael Hoisington, Teddy Navarro and Jeff Deffenbaugh.
The local boys had a really good showing today, Byrne said. Thats what we like to see. We have to hold it down for our own spot with all these rippers coming into town. I really just like surfing out here and this event is really good to help out all the local guys. Even the younger kids from HB have been doing really well and thats cool to see.
Following the completion of Round 5 of the Vans Pier Classic, the Ezekiel Pro Junior hit the water once again for Rounds 2 and 3. The absence of current ASP North America Pro Junior Series leader Tommy Bursian (San Juan, PRI) from the event has opened the door for a drastic shift in the ratings and the usual suspects took advantage of the opportunity.
Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA), who is also still in contention for the Vans Pier Classic title, tore apart the rippable afternoon beachbreak peaks netting in solid scores for a 16.50 out of a possible 20.
I dont have a preference between the QS or the Pro Junior, Arrambide said. Im just trying to go hard and stay consistent. Obviously a win on the QS would be preferred, but theyre both focuses of mine in Huntington.
Also advancing into the Quarterfinals of the Ezekiel Pro Junior are ASP North America Pro Junior standouts Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), Cody Thompson (Jacksonville Beach, FL), Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA) and Dillon Perillo (Ventura, CA) all of whom are still in contention for the Vans Pier Classic Title as well. Tomorrows action will reveal if there is a dual-event champion.
The women hit the water for the first time today with the Quarterfinals of the Vans Womens Pier Classic, an ASP WQS 1-Star event.
Christa Alves (Cocoa Beach, FL) blew minds in her opening round heat throwing down some massive turns to net the highest single-wave score of the event, a 9.65 out of a possible 10. The young natural-footer put the rest of the girls on notice, and looks to be one the form surfers of the event.
Ive just been on such a losing streak as of late that I just wanted to let loose a little bit, Alves said. The waves were a bit inconsistent, but that one had a bit of a wall on it and I was able to throw down a few turns.
Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA), the first qualifier for Januarys Billabong ASP World Junior Championships following her win in Sebastian earlier this month, looked solid in her opening heat of Vans Pier Classic competition. The 14-year old phenom blasted away at the shifting righthanders securing an impressive 14.50 out of a possible 20.
I just go out there and catch waves and try to use good form, Conlogue said. I just try to get through my heats. It was a lot flatter than the other heats before mine so I was surfing a lot on the inside. My goal is to win this event. On the beach, were buddies, but in the water, were in competition mode.
Tomorrow will be the final day of Vans Pier Classic competition crowning champions in the mens, womens and Ezekiel Pro Junior events.
Official Vans Pier Classic surf forecasters at Surfline.com are calling for the continued combination swell with the pulse from the south increases as the north backs off.
Action will hit the water again at 8am tomorrow with the Quarterfinals of the Ezekiel Pro Junior.
The event will be webcast LIVE at www.aspnorthamerica.org.

TOP SEEDS GO BIG IN ROUND 4 AT VANS PIER CLASSIC EZEKIEL PRO JUNIOR KICKS OFF HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Friday, Mar. 23, 2007) Round 4 of the Vans Pier Classic presented by Jacks Surfboards along with Spy Optics was treated to an incredible day of competition as the top seeds let loose in the contestable 2 to 4 foot (0.6-1.2 metre) waves at Huntington Beach Pier.
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-Star event further narrowed the field down to the final 32 surfers before moving into the opening rounds of the Ezekiel Pro Junior.
Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA) was in blistering form this morning, netting the rounds high heat total of a 16.00 out of a possible 20. The super-fit natural-footer surfed with a speed unrivaled by his competitors and looks to be a serious threat to this years Vans Pier Classic title.
Ive been going to the gym everyday and surfing a lot, Arrambide said. Ive been surfing everyday as long as I can sometimes up to three times a day. I have some really good boards under my feet right now and Im feeling good.
Arrambide, a standout amateur competitor, is transitioning well into the professional ranks. Last season, the 17-year old phenom finished 12th on the highly-competitive ASP North America Pro Junior Series in addition to putting in some big performances on the WQS.
Ive been competing here at Huntington for ages and I always seem to favor the rights, Arrambide said. The rights are working really well on this tide right now and I was able to capitalize. Im hoping for a solid result at the Vans Pier Classic to build my seed for a serious assault on the QS.
Danny Fuller (Hanalei, HI), who has experienced success as a wildcard at Fosters ASP World Tour level and is a well-respected big wave surfer, continued his domination at the Vans Pier Classic winning his third heat of the competition. The stylish goofy-footer decimated the tricky morning righthanders combining explosive top turns with full-rail carves.
I live in California for half of the year so Im used to surfing these types of conditions, Fuller said. I like surfing out here. A lot of people dont know, but I used to do a lot of competitions when I was growing up. Then I started surfing places like Pipeline and my sponsors liked that so thats kind of what Im known for. Im basically hoping to get enough points on the QS to get into the Triple Crown at the end of the year.
Following the completion of Round 4, the Ezekiel Pro Junior got underway with the opening rounds of competition hitting the water in improving south swell conditions. Competition was certainly lifted as the juniors locked in some of the highest-scoring waves of the event.
Bruno Rodrigues (Porto Galinhas, BRA) blew the field away locking in a near perfect 9.70 out of a possible 10 and backing it up with a solid 7.75. The solid goofy-footer surfed with a maturity well beyond his young years as he dismantled the afternoon rights in his first ASP Pro Junior event of the North American region.
I tried to get into the Pro Junior in Sebastian but wasnt able to, Rodrigues said. I am just so happy to be here. Surfing makes me happy and I hope I can continue on.
Austin Smith-Ford (Santa Cruz, CA) was another standout at the Ezekiel Pro Junior, netting an excellent 9.25 out of a possible 10. The sprightly natural-footer tore apart the lumpy righthander with a blend of critical floaters and power carves punctuated by a crowd-pleasing air reverse.
Ive been coming down here for years and this is definitely the best Ive ever seen Huntington, Smith-Ford said. Im hoping to do well here as I am planning on doing all the ASP Pro Junior events this year and hopefully Ill make the ASP World Junior Championships that would be the funnest thing ever.
Tomorrow will see the continuation of Vans Pier Classic and Ezekiel Pro Junior action and will commence with the opening round of the Vans Womens Pier Classic featuring some of the top female surfers in the North American region.
Official Vans Pier Classic surf forecasters at Surfline.com are calling for the continued combination swell from the northwest and southwest to maintain throughout the weekend.
Vans Pier Classic action will hit the water again at 8am tomorrow with Round 5.
The event will be webcast LIVE at www.aspnorthamerica.org.

Tom Rezvan (Huntington Beach, CA) utilized his years of experience at the venue to lock in the highest scoring wave of the day, a 9.00 out of a possible 10. Staving off the competition, Rezvan blew apart the bowling lefthander with full-rail surfing on his forehand.
There are a lot of set waves today, but you have to know which ones to take, Rezvan said. Some will be too A-framed and others will closeout a bit too much. You want to make sure that you pick one with a bit of a lip on it, but that also allows you a wall to run down the line with it.
Jeff Deffenbaugh (Huntington Beach, CA) was victorious in his afternoon heat along with fellow former ASP World Tour competitor Richie Collins (Newport Beach, CA). The journeymen competitors looked comfortable despite the tricky conditions, taking down up-and-comers Matt Mohagen (Los Angeles, CA) and Brad Burdick (Laguna Beach, CA).
It was so windy out there that none of us were near each other, Deffenbaugh said. I guess it was interesting that Richie (Collins) and I came out on top of the younger guys, but it really came down to luck more than anything.
Deffenbaugh, who is a legendary competitor in the Surf City community, was a surprise non-entry into the Vans Pier Classic. However the powerful natural-footer eventually submitted to the competitive juices, entering as an alternate in Round 1.
We had a horrible winter and I didnt surf very much and I honestly just didnt feel confident enough to enter, Deffenbaugh said. A lot of people questioned why I didnt enter, and then the opportunity came up and I am happy I took it. Ive made it through a few heats and Im feeling confident again.
Layne Harrison (San Diego, CA) secured the days high heat total of a 15.75 out of a possible 20 for his blistering midday performance. The lanky natural-footer blew apart the reeling righthanders and looks to be one of the form surfers of the event thus far.
Tomorrow will see Round 4 of the Vans Pier Classic hit the water with the events top seeds entering the draw. Marquee names such as Jason Collins (Santa Cruz, CA), Mike Losness (San Clemente, CA), Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), Josh Mulcoy (Santa Cruz, CA), local boy Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA) among others will join the fray as they vie for the Vans Pier Classic title.
In addition to tomorrows Vans Pier Classic Round 4 action, the opening rounds of the Ezekiel Pro Junior will hit the water with some of the most dynamic up-and-coming junior surfers in North America.
Tommy Bursian (Isabella, PRI) is currently leading the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series following his victory at Sebastian Inlet earlier this month. With Bursian a no show at the Ezekiel Pro Junior, the door is wide open for a slew of competitors to overtake the lead.
Official Vans Pier Classic surf forecasters at Surfline.com are looking for the south swell to continue filling in throughout the weekend.
Vans Pier Classic action will hit the water again at 8am tomorrow with Round 4.
The event will be webcast LIVE at www.aspnorthamerica.org.

ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS (ASP) INTERNATIONAL
Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Stop No 2. on the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour and ASP Womens World Tour Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia April 3 - 13, 2007
FANNING AND HEDGES ENTER 35TH ANNUAL RIP CURL PRO ASP RATINGS LEADERS
BELLS BEACH, Australia (Thursday, Mar. 22, 2007) The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the second event on the Fosters ASP World Tour and ASP Womens World Tour, will celebrate its 35th anniversary in the magical amphitheater that is Bells from April 3-13, 2007.
The longest-running surf event in Australia, the annual pilgrimage to Bells Beach continues with the worlds best surfers and their fans congregating on the famed breaks cliffs again this Easter.
Adding to the already historic aura that envelops the event will be a gala celebration to honor the former Rip Curl Pro champions who have made their mark on the event's 35-year history.
Honorees will include Simon Anderson [1977, 1981], Tom Curren [1985, 1990], Tom Carroll [1986] and Damien Hardman [1988, 1993] among others.
Honorees still donning contest rashvests this year will be Sofia Mulanovich (PER), Megan Abubo (HAW) and reigning world champion Layne Beachley (AUS) on the womens side and defending Rip Curl Pro and world champion Kelly Slater (USA), Mark Occy Occhilupo (AUS), Andy Irons (HAW), Joel Parkinson (AUS), injury replacement Trent Munro (AUS) and current World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS) for the men.
Everything that has happened over the past 35 years has continued to add and build up the huge prestige around the Rip Curl Pro, current World No. 1 Mick Fanning said. Everyone that has won the Rip Curl Pro has pretty much gone on to do something fairly huge. Youve got guys like MP [1973, 1974 and 1975 Rip Curl Pro Champion Michael Peterson], Mark Richards [1978, 1979, 1980, 1982], Kelly Slater [1994, 2006], Andy Irons [2002, 2003] and Occy [1998] its pretty much the whos who of surfing. The Bell is a pretty bloody good trophy to have on your mantelpiece!
To win the Rip Curl Pro and subsequently Ring the Bell is considered one of the sports highest honors. Fanning rang it as a wildcard in 2001. His best result at the Rip Curl Pro since was an equal 3rd finish in 2003.
It was an amazing feeling, Fanning said. Ever since I was a little kid I had been watching people ring the Bell and talk about the feeling you get, so to do it that one time was huge. I wish I was a little bit stronger so I could have lifted it above my head, but I am really excited to try and win it again hopefully this year.
After a strong finish to his 2006 campaign, Fanning shot to No. 1 on the ratings with a win at the first event on the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour earlier this month.
I think that if you can get a good start in the first two events it really helps towards setting up a world title chance, said Fanning. Being in Australia for the start of the year always helps too and everyone is looking towards getting a really strong result at the Rip Curl Pro.
Chelsea Hedges (AUS), who won an ASP Womens World Title in 2005 and the first event on this years calendar, is also hoping to post back-to-back victories at home in Australia.
After seeing Mel Redman-Carr win three events in a row last year, anything is possible, Hedges said. It will be great to get back down to Bells again. I love surfing on my backhand and I love surfing Bells so it will interesting to see what happens down there."
The ASP Womens World Tour was notably absent from the 2006 Rip Curl Pro calendar but a welcome addition to the roster this year. Beachley, who posted Bells Beach victories in 1994, 1998 and 1999, is among the female competitors thrilled to be back at the prestigious venue.
Im really looking forward to getting down to Bells, Beachley said. Its been a few years since weve been there regularly. I own three and I would love to own four.
A Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival is run in conjunction with the ASP World Tour events. For more information visit www.aspworldtour.com and www.ripcurl.com/ripcurlpro.

YOUTH PREVAILS AT DAY 1 OF THE VANS PIER CLASSIC HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Wednesday, Mar. 21, 2007) The Vans Pier Classic presented by Jacks Surfboards along with Spy Optics commenced today with Round 1 hitting the water in 1 to 3 foot (0.3-0.9 metre) waves on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier.
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-star event was treated to an excellent day of competition which saw the younger surfers shine in the trying conditions.
Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 13-year-old phenom and giant-slayer, was in searing form in Round 1 securing the days high single-wave score of a 9.25 out of a possible 10. The prodigious goofy-footer looked at ease in the midday peaks blending solid turns with exciting aerials as he took down journeyman competitors Dave Post (Newport Beach, CA) and Ryan Carlson (Huntington Beach, CA).
I went out and just tried to get a couple waves before my heat and just tried to surf as best I could, Geiselman said. I am a little bit more confident with that win and now I just want to get out and surf my next heat as best I can. I hope that I can just keep making heats and having fun. I have the Pro Junior on Friday and thats what Im really focusing on.
Jason Miller (San Clemente, CA) lit up the improving afternoon conditions with some vicious surfing on his backhand, securing a solid 16.50 out of a possible 20. At 21years old, Miller has a long, promising career ahead of him, yet understands the necessity of staying fresh in order to stave off the onslaught of up-and-comers pushing through the ranks.
There are so many good kids nowadays and they all seem to be in this event, Miller said. Just in San Clemente, we have Luke Davis and Kolohe Andino and Tanner Rozunko. I try to surf with the younger kids everyday as it keeps you really sharp. Last week we had a little pulse down at Lowers so it was good for getting back in the swing of things.
Nick Kovack (Encinitas, CA) led a solid charge from San Diego County that saw Julian Mullins (San Diego, CA), Jordan Gaudet (Ocean Beach, CA), Layne Harrison (San Diego, CA) all winning their respective Round 1 and Round 2 heats. Kovack secured the days high heat total of a 17.25 out of a possible 20 with his blistering forehand attack.
Its good just to be able to do an event at home especially here in Huntington as it is always contestable, Kovack said. A lot of guys have gone over to Australia to compete so it shifts the field here a bit and Im looking for a solid result at this event.
Official Vans Pier Classic surf forecasters at Surfline.com are calling for an increase in swell throughout the competition, so look for conditions to continue to improve as the event moves forward.
Vans Pier Classic action will hit the water again at 8am tomorrow with Heat 9 of Round 2.
The event will be webcast LIVE at www.aspnorthamerica.org.

ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS (ASP) INTERNATIONAL
ASP WORLD LONGBOARD TOUR Oxbow Pro April 30 to May 6 Anglet, France
OXBOW RETURNS TO THE FOLD TO PRESENT OXBOW PRO A WORLD LONGBOARD TOUR EVENT
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Wednesday, February 14, 2007) The worlds best Longboard riders are buzzing with the news that clothing manufacturer Oxbow has returned after a three-year hiatus and will host an official ASP World Longboard Tour event in April this year.
The event, which at the time of going to press could very well crown 2007s world longboard champion, will be known as the Oxbow Pro and will take place at les Cavaliers, Anglet, France.
The format of the event will be identical to that of shortboard surfings penultimate professional series the Fosters ASP World Tour which has a 48-man draw where surfers compete in man-on-man heats from round two.
The event which has $US50,000 up for grabs will attract the worlds best longboarders including former world champions Bonga Perkins (HAW), Joel Tudor (USA), Colin McPhillips (USA) and reigning world champion Josh Constable (AUS).
For Constable who recently had a dream come true when he stood alongside the likes of eight-time Fosters ASP World Tour champion Kelly Slater (USA) and seven-time ASP Womens World Tour champion Layne Beachley (AUS) when accepting his trophy at a gala ceremony heading to the Basque coast of France will be a much anticipated affair.
Known as the cradle of European surfing, the Basque Coast offers numerous world-class surf locations that are perfect for hosting a world longboard championship.
I think going to Anglet is a great thing, said Constable. There will be a few different peaks so it will separate everyone and unlike a point break where everyone sits in the same takeoff spot there will be more waves ridden and it wont be as fierce competition to catch waves.
For me Im really happy to be going to Anglet on the beach breaks, said Constable. Hopefully it will have some size and last year at Costa Rica the waves were just that head high beach breaks and I did well there so Im pumped.
As far as competitive threats go, Constable spoke of many who could potential steal his thunder and going into the event he will watching his back all the way through.
Not only are many of the world class older school the ones to watch but in recent years the sport has enticed many youngsters to step up to the plate.
Youd have to look out for Joel Tudor, Bonga Perkins, Colin McPhillips, said Constable. They are all such great surfers as theyve shown before by winning world titles but also there are a few new faces that will need to be watched
Guys like Matthew Moore from South Africa, Taylor Jensen from the USA then Snow who was runner up last year
And the list goes on. Being another year too you never know which kids have stepped up and will be in contention. I just cant wait to get over there and get amongst it and see what happens.

VANS PIER CLASSIC KICKS OFF 2007 ASP NORTH AMERICA WEST COAST LEG HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Wednesday, Mar. 14, 2007) The Vans Pier Classic presented by Jacks Surfboards will kick off the west coast leg of the 2007 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Tour at Huntington Beach from Mar. 21-25, 2007.
In its second year as an ASP event, the Vans Pier Classic will host a field of 160 men in the World Qualifying Series (WQS) two-star event as well as 32 women in the WQS one-star event as they battle for prize money and valuable ratings points.
Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), one of the returning finalists from last seasons Van Pier Classic, will look for a repeat stellar performance utilizing his years of experience at the venue.
Local knowledge can play a huge factor, depending on the conditions, Byrne said. If the waves are good, it's anyones game, but it's when the conditions are less than ideal that the locals have a little bit of an edge over everyone else. However, as with any contest, there're so many good surfers that anyone can win this thing.
The hallowed beachbreak peaks of Huntington Beach Pier will see the Vans Pier Classic provide five days of high-performance competition and will see several young surfers in their maiden event at the professional level.
My motivation is that it's in my backyard, and it's a great place for an event because there're always waves here, Byrne said. People don't realize that if the pier is only 2-3 ft, and you travel anywhere north or south, it will be half the size. I also like this contest because it's a great place for some of the local groms to surf in their first ASP WQS event. I saw quite a few of their names on the entry list and can't wait to see them take down some pros just not me.
The womens event will feature perennial threats Karina Petroni (Atlantic Beach, FL), Sage Erickson (Oxnard, CA) and Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA) all vying for the Vans Pier Classic title as the 32-surfer field does battle.
The Ezekiel Pro Junior, running in conjunction with the Vans Pier Classic, will see 64 junior men surfers compete in the second event on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series.
Tommy Bursian (San Juan, PRI) currently leads this seasons ratings following a convincing win at Sebastian Inlet earlier this month. The powerful goofy-footer will now be challenged by last seasons ASP North America Pro Junior Champion Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, CA) as well as other standouts in Adam Wickwire (Satellite Beach, FL), Kilian Garland (Orcutt, CA), Jesse Heilman (Daytona Beach, FL) and Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA).
The event will be webcast LIVE at www.aspnorthamerica.org.
All the action begins at 8am on Mar. 21, 2007.

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Event No 1. on the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia February 27 - March 11, 2007
FANNING FIRST TO CLAIM SECOND VICTOR IN QUIKSILVER PRO GOLD COAST
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Wednesday, Mar. 7, 2007) Mick Fanning (AUS) has set the pace for the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour today, winning the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung at his home break of Snapper Rocks for the second time in three years.
Beating fellow local and unsponsored surfer Bede Durbidge (AUS) in barrelling five to six foot (one and a half to two metre) Snapper Rocks waves, Fanning slotted himself into a series of deep barrels and executed some of his patented searing turns to emerge from the water victorious much to the delight of the 10,000 plus strong crowd.
Crowd favorite Fanning, as expected, was elated with his form.
To win here in front of everyone is a dream come true, Fanning said. Im just ecstatic. And to surf with Bede in the final
hes been ripping and hes always been an amazing surfer. He is surfing this year without a sponsor so Ive been saying to industry people, You should pick him up because he is going to do some damage this year, and then out he comes and makes the final.
Fanning can now claim to be the first to have scored two Quiksilver Pro victories and in front of his fellow Snapper Rocks buddies, 2002 and 2003 winners Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Dean Morrison (AUS) (who are known affectionately as the Coolangatta Kids,) he can stand up and be counted as being one of the best to surf the world class wave.
Im so pumped, it was always going to be a race of the boys as to who was going to get two, said Fanning. What better way to start the year than in perfect Snapper and surfing with a mate. Just to win at home, its awesome.
His win today, his seventh Fosters ASP World Tour victory, has thrust Fanning into pole position to go after his maiden world title.
Fanning finished the 2005 and 2006 seasons in 3rd place and won events in Jeffreys Bay and Brazil in last year.
I made three out of six finals in the second half of last year, Fanning said. I was pretty confident in my surfing and I just tried to roll that into this year. I stayed really relaxed the whole time and it paid dividends here in this event. Even when I was in bad situations I just felt the waves were coming and yeah
its just a great day.
Fanning won the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast for the first time in 2005 an amazing feat citing it was his first event back after at horrific hamstring injury which sidelined him for months.
I think this second win at Snapper is a little bit different, Fanning said. Last time I was in this position (on top of the ratings after the first event) I had just come back from a big injury it was a huge relief but this year Im more focused and I really believe that I can take the world title. Plus Im just enjoying it a lot more.
Durbidge upset top seeded surfers Kelly Slater (USA) and Joel Parkinson (AUS) to find himself in the event final his second since he landed on tour in 2005.
Durbidge posted his first Fosters ASP World Tour win at Trestles in California last year.
It was great to make the final, Durbidge said. It would have been a little bit sweeter if I had got first though. That was probably the worst heat I have had the whole event. I just didnt come out of a few barrels that I wanted to make; it would have been a bit different if I had made them. Its an awesome way to start though and Im looking forward to the next event.
Durbidges semifinal match-up with the reigning world champ was the stuff surf fantasies are made of.
Durbidge opened the heat strong with two massive scores, leaving Slater needing a combination of excellent scoring rides to emerge from the heat alive.
Fighting his way back the way only an eight-time world champ can, Slater notched up the scores he needed and took the lead but last minute heroics by Durbidge changed the situation once again.
"What do you do? said Slater. I did good to come back to get the lead and then that wave came. The waves were there to be had and he was just in better sync than me; he had the advantage with that 9.93. I didnt think that I was going to get back in there. You cant be bummed losing a heat like that. We both scored high, we both surfed well and he surfed better than me."
Slater leaves the Quiksilver Pro equal 3rd and, while happy with his result, is wary that the other semifinalists now have the upperhand.
"You have to have semifinal finishes and better to get a title, Slater said. The guys Im expecting to be there are Taj (Burrow) and Mick (Fanning). Ill match one of them (with this result) and the other guy will get more in the finals.
Also finishing equal 3rd was Burrow, last years Quiksilver Pro runner-up. Burrow lost his semifinal heat to Fanning.
Im really disappointed, but its still a really good result, Burrow said. I was just feeling like I couldnt do anything right. Mick had that local knowledge where he was just getting the smaller ones because it was lower tide. I got a couple of bigger ones that looked sick when I pulled in, but they just pinched me. He was just getting those sick little drainers. He nailed it. Im bummed, but whatever, Ill take a third."
En route to the final, Fanning came precariously close to losing his quarterfinal clash with Fosters ASP Rookie Josh Kerr (AUS).
Kerr left Fanning needing a near-perfect heat score to advance. Fanning found it and beat Kerr 19.53 to 19.10 in easily one of the highest scoring heats in ASP history.
The Fosters ASP World Tour will now head south to the frigid waters of Bells Beach for the Rip Curl Pro, which will kick off April 3.

SLATER SCORES SWEET REVENGE IN ROUND 3 OF THE QUIKSILVER PRO
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Tuesday, Mar. 6, 2007) Despite their epic early-round appearances, wildcards Jake Paterson (AUS) and Julian Wilson (AUS) were no match for top-rated Fosters ASP World Tour surfers Kelly Slater (USA) and Mick Fanning (AUS)in Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung today.
Slater, a rare Round 2 entity, was relegated to the early elimination round by Wilson on Day One of the Quiksilver Pro. Posting a near-perfect 19.87 out of 20.00 in clean four foot (1.2 metre) conditions at Snapper Rocks today, the eight-time Fosters ASP World Champ left Wilson defenseless.
Losses can be really good because they tend to get you a little more focused and if you use them right they will improve what youre doing, Slater said. Its a balance. Take a loss, figure out what you did wrong, where your head was at, whatever else was getting in the way and then sort it out and get back out there. Today was the best heat Ive had in a couple of years.
Slater earned the first perfect 10.00 ride of the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour season by performing nearly every radical maneuver known to man midway through his heat. Drawing on deep tube rides, full-rail carves and innovative aerials, the reigning world champ pulled everything out of his bag of tricks to amass the flawless score.
Paterson meanwhile, was responsible for eliminating former three-time Fosters ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) in Round 2, but was no match for Fanning in what might be the final Fosters ASP World Tour heat for Patersons illustrious career. Fanning, who won the Quiksilver Pro in 2005, posted an 18.07 to Patersons 12.93.
Yeah it all went good, just watching Kelly the heat before, he went mad and I was just pretty excited to get out there, Fanning said. This is probably the best Ive seen Snapper for the contest. I surf it all the time and usually therere a thousand people in the way and you cant really do a turn.
Fanning and friends chaired the now-retired Paterson out of the ocean after their heat.
Just to surf out there with Jake in his last event, after the tens of years hes been on tour, it was pretty special for me, Fanning said. Ever since Ive been on tour hes been there to help me out. Im just stoked I got to share that last heat with him. Top seeded surfers Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Taj Burrow (AUS) also advanced, though both surfers were forced to dig deep to find the form they needed to move to Round 4.
Parkinson overcame Brazilian rookie Leonardo Neves in the first heat of the day, but the 2002 Quiksilver Pro champion was admittedly rattled afterward. Leonardo (Neves) is going to be a really fierce competitor this year, Parkinson said. I really think that he will do some damage; drawing him wont be a walk in the park at all. He had me on the ropes there for a while. I just had to have faith that the waves would come. I dont look forward to the next match hes pretty good.
Burrow barely scraped through his heat against injury alternate Trent Munro (AUS). Needing a solid score with time ticking down, Burrow pulled out all the stops on his final wave to net a 7.50 out of a possible 10.
"I still feel a little uneasy, like I didnt make it because it was so close, Burrow said. Im stoked! I just tried to concentrate on that last wave and get the 7.50 and only just scraped it in, so Im really stoked. But definitely a stressful one.
First-year Fosters ASP World Tour member Kai Otton (AUS) claimed a major scalp in last years Rookie of the Year Bobby Martinez (USA).
"I was trying to have some fun and I didnt know what to expect, Otton said. I was even a little confused out there with the priority and didnt know where to sit at the end, but Im just rolling with it and hopefully keep rolling. Bobby is an amazing surfer, I got lucky, hopefully I can keep it rolling.
Other rookies advancing today were Josh Kerr (AUS) and Ben Dunn (AUS). Kerr, who is often considered a purely aerial surfer, showed he has some big turns in his repertoire as well, eliminating last years ASP World No. 8 Tom Whitaker today.
"Its a great confidence booster, Kerr said. First contest of the year and to be able to beat one of the top 10 already, at my home break, in front of my home crowd
its really good. Im going to try and make the final first and then to try and win the event. Its been my dream since the contest came to town when I was growing up. Im just excited to give it a good shot.
At press time, contest organizers had opted to run the first two heats of Round 4 featuring Joel Parkinson (AUS) vs. Bruce Irons (HAW) and Bede Durbidge (AUS) vs. Kai Otton (AUS). Results will be available on www.aspworldtour.com.

Roxy Pro Gold Coast Event No 1. on the 2007 ASP Womens World Tour Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia February 27 March 11, 2007
HEDGES HOLDS OFF TEEN PHENOM TO WIN ROXY PRO AND TAKE RATINGS LEAD
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Monday, Mar. 5, 2007) Chelsea Hedges, 23, has won the first event on the 2007 ASP Womens World Tour, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung, at what amounts to her home break of Snapper Rocks in Coolangatta, Australia today.
Hedges (formerly Georgeson) moved to Coolangatta from Avoca Beach in Sydney two years ago and has moved to ASP World No. 1 with her win today.
The 2005 ASP Womens World Champion defeated prodigious Roxy Pro Wildcard Carissa Moore (HAW), 14, the youngest finalist in ASP elite-tour history
Its a pretty amazing feeling, Hedges said. I really wanted to win here because Ive never won at Snapper before and my family was on the beach too so Im pretty amped. I was waiting for Carissa to grab a bomb (set wave) and score a 9.0 or something but luckily for me she didnt. Hedges has moved to World No. 1 with the win.
Even though I wasnt really thinking about the ratings, with Carissa coming in second (NB: Carissa is not an ASP World Tour rated surfer) it puts me a great position for the start of the year and now Im looking forward to heading down to Bells Beach the next event.
Hedges had to overcome the worlds brightest up-and-coming talent to make the event final today. She defeated uber-rookie Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) in the Quarterfinals and second-year surfer Silvana Lima (BRA) in the Semifinal before meeting Moore. Its always difficult when you draw a dark horse or any of the younger girls because they surf so crazy these days, they have so much drive, Hedges said. Steph has beaten me out here before and today I got her back so it was really good for my confidence because I have a lot of respect for her. Silvana has been on fire for the whole contest but luckily in my heat she couldnt pull it off. Carissa is a great surfer and the next few years are going to be unbelievable for her.
Moore, who after winning the Roxy Pro Trials was surfing in her first-ever ASP Womens World Tour event, posted 9.33 single wave scores in her Round 3, Quarterfinal and Semifinal heats but only managed a 6.70 two-wave total in the final against Hedges.
I was just excited to be out there, Moore said. I was a little nervous, but just excited. Im totally stoked with the turn out and Im just really happy for Chelsea (Hedges) - she did awesome. Just being able to surf out at Snapper with some of the best girls in the world, it was just really nice."
Honing her competitive edge in various trials and junior events, Moore took out seven-time ASP World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), veteran competitor and former World No. 2 Megan Abubo (HAW) and 2005 ASP Rookie of the Year Rebecca Woods (AUS) en route to the final.
Woods will leave Snapper Rocks sitting equal 2nd on the ASP Womens World Tour ratings.
A semifinal finish is a good way to start the year, but it is one step short of a final and thats definitely somewhere I would like to be, Woods said. I think this was my fourth semi so Ive really got to work on that. Tricky conditions - I just wanted to get a couple of scores, but it wasnt really going my way, bit of a shame.
Tying Woods with an equal Roxy Pr 5th was Brazils Silvana Lima. Lima eliminated reigning Roxy Pro Gold Coast Champion, Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS), when she posted the highest single wave score (a 9.80 out of 10.00) and heat total (18.80 out of 20.00) of the event in the Quarters, but she was unable recreate that magic in her Semifinal against the eventual Roxy Pro winner.
I was so ready to surf the final, Lima said. I was surfing a good heat and then my leash broke and I couldnt get the score I needed, so bad luck. A semifinal finish is good, but I was ready for the final. I'm still happy though.
The next stop on the ASP Women's World Tour is Bells Beach, Australia for the Rip Curl Pro. After a one-year hiatus from the elite-tour calendar, the historical venue will be back from Apr. 3-8, 2007.
After last seeing Mel Redman-Carr win three events in a row last year, anything is possible, Hedges said. After this Im going to take some time out and refocus. It will be great to get back down to Bells again. I love surfing on my backhand and I love surfing Bells so it will interesting to see what happens down there.

Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior Event No. 1 on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series (Men) Event No 1. on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series (Women) Sebastian Inlet, Florida, United States of America March 3 - 6, 2007
BILLABONG SEBASTIAN INLET PRO JUNIOR MARCHES ONWARD DESPITE SMALL SURF SEBASTIAN INLET, Florida (Sunday, Mar. 4, 2007) After being called off yesterday due to lack of swell, the Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior ran today in 1 to 2 foot (0.3-0.6 metre) surf at Sebastian Inlet, Florida.
Despite small surf, organizers of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Grade-Two Pro Junior Grade-Two event were able to run a full days worth of heats which saw the junior men narrowed down to the Round of 32 and the junior women trimmed down to Semifinals.
Kellen Ellison (Ventura, California) was able to throw down some big scores despite the small conditions netting the days high single wave score of an 8.33 out of a possible 10. The powerful goofy-footer surfed explosively on both his forehand and backhand a looks to be a major threat for the 2007 Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior crown.
Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, California) took honors in the womens Quarterfinals as the diminutive natural-footer tore apart the fickle sandbar peaks. Conlogue, who narrowly missed out on qualifying for last years Billabong ASP World Junior Championships in Australia, will be looking for a win in Sebastian to ensure her spot this years.
The annual Billabong ASP World Junior Championships have crowned former champions such as Joel Parkinson (AUS), Andy Irons (HAW), Adriano de Souza (BRA) and reigning ASP World Junior Champ Jordy Smith (ZAF), ensuring that the pedigree is both well-respected and a necessary platform to surfing stardom.
Tomorrow will crown the mens and womens champions for the Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior which will put both winners at the top of the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior ratings.
The Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro will finish tomorrow on Monday, March 5 and will be webcast LIVE on www.billabongpro.com.

ROXY PRO GOLD COAST CHAMP TO EMERGE TODAY
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Monday, Mar. 5, 2007) The Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung, the first event on the 2007 ASP Womens World Tour, will crown its champion today, Mar. 5, 2007. The Quarterfinals will kick off at Snapper Rocks at 10am; seven heats of competition remain. The Roxy Pro final is slated to hit the water shortly after 1pm.
Quarterfinal 2 will pit Megan Abubo (HAW) against Carissa Moore (HAW), the 14-year-old wildcard who eliminated seven-time World Champion Layne Beachley in Round 3. Abubo made the Roxy Pro final in 2005.
I grew up watching Carissa develop as a surfer, Abubo said. Shes only 14-years-old and I think she is the most progressed female surfer even at that age. Shes actually very competitive and savvy, she has surfed a lot of heats in her life, even at her young age.
Quarterfinal 4 will see local favorites Chelsea Hedges (AUS) and Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) go head to head.
Gilmore won the event in 2005. Reigning Roxy Pro Champion Melanie Redman-Carr will surf against Silvana Lima (BRA) in Quarterfinal 3.

PATERSON SNAKES IRONS IN ROUND 2 OF THE QUIKSILVER PRO GOLD COAST
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Sunday, Mar. 4, 2007) Three-time Fosters ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) was eliminated by Quiksilver Pro wildcard Jake Paterson (AUS) in Round 2 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung at Snapper Rocks today, Sunday, Mar. 4, 2007.
Paterson, who announced his retirement at the end of 2006 after a decorated 17 years on tour, was given a wildcard into the event and without the pressure of tour ratings points being on the line, rose to the occasion putting on a phenomenal display of power surfing. I couldnt have asked for a better way to wrap up my career, not that its completely over or anything, but this was a dream heat today, Paterson said. I was pretty disappointed with my first round performance so I really wanted to make sure that I got a couple of good waves. Andy couldnt put a foot right and everything that came to me was a dream it was meant to be I guess.
Spurred on by unbridled patriotism, Paterson left Irons needing a combination of two good scoring rides to advance into Round 3.
Irons, realizing that he could not catch up exited the water with two minutes left in the heat.
Andy and I have had a huge rivalry over the years so it was good that I got one up on him, Paterson said. My goal was to hopefully knock out one of the title contenders early on aside from one of the Australians I want to see Australia bring home the title, so I hope I helped out the boys a little bit.
Unfortunately for Paterson, if he wants to advance out of Round 3, it will be at the expense of fellow Australian and title-hope Mick Fanning. They will meet in Heat 9 of the next round.
After losing to Wildcard Julian Wilson (AUS) in Round 1, reigning and eight-time Fosters ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) left no opportunity for another upset, easily defeating local wildcard Dale Richards (AUS).
"I think Dale fell of a bunch of times but I fell of a bunch of times too, Slater said. There wasnt that much wave pushing back out there.
Slater will again draw Wilson in Heat 8 of Round 3.
Adriano de Souza (BRA) thrilled the throngs of Brazilians on site with his victory over Troy Brooks (AUS). One of five Brazilians surfing Round 2 today, de Souza was the only South American to advance. He will join fellow countrymen Leonardo Neves (BRA) and Raoni Monteiro (BRA) in Round 3.
I found a couple of nice waves behind the rocks and Im pretty excited to get through here at Snapper Rocks, De Souza said. I have a lot of Brazilian fans sitting on the sand, the flags are up, so Im pretty stoked. Every guy from my country is going for me in the water so Im pretty happy.
Pancho Sullivan held it down for the Hawaiians, beating Shaun Cansdell (AUS) 14.76 to 12.80.
Going into it I felt a little nervous, I was watching Shaun in the first round and he looked really lose and comfortable out there, Sullivan said. Ive been carrying an injury since about the start of the year, so I havent been able to surf a lot. I spent all of last week trying to build up my surf conditioning and even though I didnt feel 100 percent that heat, tactically I surfed a pretty smart. I didnt hit my stride on any particular wave, but I felt like I got it done.
South African Travis Logie defeated local icon Mark Occhilupo (AUS) late in the day, putting in an incredible performance on his backhand.
"Ive looked up to Occy my whole life, Logie said. He was the reason I started surfing and he was one of my heroes. Coming up against him is difficult because you feel bad beating someone you have looked up to so much. He was a really tough competitor so I was really nervous. I was really hoping to get through, really, really, really!"
Several excellent scoring rides in the 9.0 range were posted today. Those scores belong to: De Souza 9.07, Tom Whitaker (AUS) 9.50, Phil Macdonald (AUS) 9.23, CJ Hobgood (USA) 9.10 and Damien Hobgood (USA) 9.10.
Movie stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson spent the afternoon checking out the Quiksilver Pro from the surfers area. The Hollywood duo is currently filming a feature in Australia. McConaughey was sighted with Slater at Snapper Rocks last weekend as well.
Im just starting to get into surfing, McConaughey said. Even if I get out there and have a crappy day and Im just sitting around and I dont catch a wave, I think, look where you are, youre in the water on the beach, good sights all around, got sunshine! So even when Im not getting a wave, Im getting out there everyday as much as I can.
The next call for competition will be at 6am tomorrow.
In the mean time, check out all todays action at www.aspworldtour.com.

ASP FOSTERS 45 HIT THE WATER FOR QUIKSILVER PRO ROUND 2 AT 8AM COOLANGATTA, Australia (Sunday, Mar. 4, 2007) Round 2 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung will hit the water this morning at 8am in clean 4 to 5 foot (1.2-1.5 metre) surf at Snapper Rocks.
Right now, Snapper is ideal conditions," Contest Director Rod Brooks said. "It's around 4 to 5 feet on the big sets, and we're starting with Round 2 of the men's. Kelly Slater is in the first heat, Andy Irons is in the second heat so we've got a full day's program here. The cyclone that was bearing down on us has remained stationary and looks like it will not hit us."
The elimination Round 2 will pit the ASP Fosters 45 against one another in man-on-man competition, and will send 16 of the worlds best home with equal 33rd place finishes.
The opening heats will see top seeds such as Kelly Slater (USA), Andy Irons (HAW) and Taj Burrow (AUS) do battle with dangerous wildcards and rookies in indigenous Australian and trials winner Dale Richards (AUS), former Fosters ASP World Tour campaigner Jake Paterson (AUS) and 07 rookie Luke Munro (AUS).

Roxy Pro Gold Coast Event No 1. on the 2007 ASP Womens World Tour Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia February 27 March 11, 2007
FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD PHENOM ESCORTS 7X ASP WORLD CHAMP OUT OF ROXY PRO COOLANGATTA, Australia (Saturday, Mar. 3, 2007) At 14-years-old Carissa Moore (HAW) is 20-years younger than seven-time ASP Women's World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS). Twenty-nine minutes into their 30-minute clash in Round 3 of the Roxy Pro today, the only numbers that mattered were those being doled out by the judges.
Moore's 9.33 single wave score (the days highest) was just one-tenth of a point less than Beachley's combined heat total of 9.34 an equation that left Beachley needing a combination of two good scoring rides to win their Round 3 clash.
Moore, who earned entry into the main event after winning the Roxy Pro Trials on Monday, beat Beachley 15.66 to 9.34 to advance.
Im super stoked, but I was honored just to be out there with Layne," Moore said. "Shes such a great person, so Im just excited.
Moore watched fellow competitor and 2007 ASP Womens World Tour Rookie Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) win the event as a wildcard in 2005, but, in her signature style, remained humble about whether she thinks she could accomplish the same feat.
"Steph definitely destroyed that contest - she did awesome," Moore said. "I dont know if I can do that but Im looking forward to having fun and surfing in the contest.
Beachley, the reigning ASP Womens World Champion, is no stranger to drawing wildcards and has come up short in a couple of highly-publicized bouts against them namely in Gilmore. As the No. 1 seed, and with Gilmore now a tour staple, Beachley can now add Moore to her list of grommets (young surfers) to be wary of.
Shes such a polite girl, Beachley said. When we were coming in she was like, 'Thank you so much for surfing against me,' and I was like, 'Well thank you so much for smashing me!' When you are the top seed youre going to come up against unpredictable 14-year-old wildcards that are going to kick your butt. Carissa had nothing to lose out there, nothing to prove and she went out there with such confidence. Beachley, who finished runner-up to Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS) in the Roxy Pro last year, was quick to give Moore the credit she deserved. I cant find any excuses for what happened to me today," Beachley said. "Im not going to beat myself up too hard about it. I think the conditions today were quite good and obviously if Carissa could score a 9.00, then being seven-time World Champ, I should be able to too. It was just a matter of being patient and I was impatient towards the end of the heat thats what got me.
Gilmores Round 3 win over Claire Bevilacqua (AUS) will see her through to the Quarterfinals. She sits opposite the draw from Moore and could potentially draw her if they both advance through their Quarter and Semifinal heats.
I would love to make the final with Carissa, although she would probably smash me," Gilmore said. "It will be really interesting to see how far she will go in this event, and no doubt, it will be pretty far."
Gilmore, a Snapper Rocks regular, will now meet fellow local and close friend Chelsea Hedges (formerly Georgeson) in the next round.
"I was kind of hoping that wouldn't happen, because I would love to make the final with Chelsea," Gilmore said. "Well meet up in the Quarters, which will be really difficult, but hopefully Ill just do my best and make it through. Shes surfing just amazing right now so its going to be pretty hard."
Hedges, who won a world title in 2005 and finished the 2006 season No. 4 in the world, would love to win at home but is equally disappointed about having to face her friend Gilmore in the next round.
"Its a bummer that were meeting up in the Quarters, but its going to be a good heat and Im look forward to it for sure.
Silvana Lima (BRA) missed the Hawaiian leg of the 2006 ASP Women's World Tour due to injury and a subsequent knee operation, but found the strength to post the day's highest heat total, 16.33 out 20.00 possible points.
Lima eliminated fellow Brazilian and 2004 Roxy Pro Gold Coast Champion Jacqueline Silva to advance.
Reigning Roxy Pro Gold Coast Champion Redman-Carr, Amee Donohoe (AUS), Rebecca Woods (AUS) and Megan Abubo (HAW) are also through to the Quarterfinals after winning their Round 3 heats today.
The Fosters Surf Showdown, the dynamic new nation versus nation exhibition format replacing last years Fosters Expression Session, ran this afternoon in front of a capacity crowd at Snapper Rocks. Featuring six teams in Australia, America, Brazil, South Africa, Hawaii and the Fosters Rookies, the Surf Showdown was a resounding success as the two-man teams comprised of the Fosters 45 battled it out in the 2 to 3 foot (0.6 to 0.9 metre) surf.
This was the inaugural Fosters Surf Showdown and we were treated to some exciting nation versus nation action in a teams format, Fosters Surf Ambassador Toby Martin said. Were excited that todays event went so well, and although were still toying with the format, we expect that the exhibition will be a great success this season. Today proved that the Fosters Rookies were the top dogs to beat showing an incredible array of talent.
The Fosters Rookies, captained by local Josh Kerr (AUS) who surfed alongside Jeremy Flores (FRA), took down a heavily favored team Australia comprised of Mick Fanning (AUS) and Joel Parkinson (AUS).
Im just so stoked weve come out on top, Kerr said. Jeremy (Flores) and I just went out there and tried to go big. Ive been surfing here my whole life so it feels great to get one off of Joel (Parkinson) and Mick (Fanning). Im really excited, we have a really deep talent pool in the rookies and Im looking forward to the rest of the event.
The next call will be made at 6am tomorrow morning.

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast/Roxy Pro Gold Coast Event No. 1 on the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour Event No 1. on the 2007 ASP Womens World Tour Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia February 27 March 11, 2007
LAY DAY CALLED AFTER ROXY PRO GOES MOBILE COOLANGATTA, Australia (Wednesday, Mar. 2, 2007) After a mission which saw the worlds best female surfers scour the coast in search of quality waves, event organizers of the Roxy Pro have decided to call a lay day.
Early this morning, there were some positive signs that Round 3 of the event the first on the ASP Womens World Tour would get underway, and the girls were sent out for the Samsung Expression Session to test the waters and show the massive crowd on hand their wares.
Chelsea Hedges (AUS) took honors for best wave while Megan Abubo stood out for best maneuver. Both girls were awarded $2000 worth of Samsung gear for their troubles.
Unfortunately, the conditions deteriorated with a heavy onshore wind thus leading to the event organizers attempting to move the event 45 minutes north where winds were more favorable.
On arrival at a location known as The Spit, an artificial reef constructed in front of world famous Surfers Paradise, it was deemed that conditions were unsuitable for competition and the event was called off for the day.
Well, weve been chasing our tail all day trying to give ourselves the opportunity to finish the event before the cyclone potentially hits, Reigning ASP Womens World Champ Layne Beachley (AUS) said. We started with the Expression Session hoping that northwest winds would turn northeast while we were out in the water. That didnt eventuate so then we went up to the Spit because its really clean in this wind and that wasnt really rideable. We came to Narrowneck and crash test dummied it, but that didnt work either. Weve exhausted every possible option and decided that surfing two-foot blown out Snapper would be better that two-foot blown out Narrowneck, so were off for today.
Organizers will once again convene at Snapper Rocks tomorrow morning and will make a call regarding the continuation of either the Roxy Pro of the Quiksilver Pro events.
When competition resumes, Round 3 match-ups are:
Heat 1: Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS) vs. Amee Donohoe (AUS) Heat 2: Rebecca Woods (AUS) vs. Melanie Bartels (HAW) Heat 3: Megan Abubo (HAW) vs. Samantha Cornish (AUS) Heat 4: Layne Beachley (AUS) vs. Carissa Moore (HAW) Heat 5: Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS) vs. Rosanne Hodge (ZAF) Heat 6: Silvana Lima (BRA) vs. Jacqueline Silva (BRA) Heat 7: Claire Bevilacqua (AUS) vs. Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) Heat 8: Chelsea Hedges (AUS) vs. Caroline Sarran (FRA)

Roxy Pro Gold Coast Event No. 1 on the 2007 ASP Women's World Tour Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia February 27 March 11, 2007
ROXY PRO GOLD COAST HAS GONE MOBILE TO THE SPIT COOLANGATTA, Australia (Friday, Mar. 2, 2007) After holding the womens Samsung Expression Session in wind-affected conditions at Snapper Rocks this morning, Round 3 of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung has been relocated to a break 45-minutes north of the contest site known as The Spit.
"We've had really good reports from The Spit, Contest Director Rod Brooks said. It's at the northern most end of the Surfer's Paradise area. Before you get to South Stradbroke, there's the entrance to the Seaway. At the Seaway, there's a rock wall that protects the boats coming in and out of the Seaway. We've got a report of waves there. We've got a northerly wind now which means it's offshore and we're hoping to run Round 3 of the Roxy Pro at noon."
Winners of this mornings Samsung Expression Session were Chelsea Hedges (AUS) for Best Wave and Megan Abubo (HAW) for Best Maneuver. The winners were awarded $2,000 worth of Samsung merchandise.
Pending the Top 17s arrival at The Spit, competition should commence at noon. Unfortunately, there will be no live webcast, but heat by heat updates, video highlights and images will be available later in the day. Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Event No. 1 on the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia February 27 March 11, 2007
ROOKIES AND WILCARDS CAUSE UPSETS AT DAY 1 OF THE QUIKSILVER PRO GOLD COAST COOLANGATTA, Australia (Thursday, Mar. 1, 2007) Round 1 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung was full of upsets after the ASP Fosters 45 did battle in the three to four foot (1 to 1.2 metre) surf at Snapper Rocks today, Mar. 1 2007.
Julian Wilson (AUS), who gained entry into the Quiksilver Pro as a wildcard, wasted little time in his inaugural opportunity against the worlds best, scoring a sensational upset in defeating reigning and eight-time Fosters ASP World Tour champion Kelly Slater (USA).
Im stoked I have never surfed in a big comp like this before and my expectations werent this high, Wilson said. Im trying to keep them high, but its pretty hard when youre looking into a lineup like the one I have ahead of me. Im just taking it one step at a time and hopefully Ill do all right.
Slater, who is the defending Quiksilver Pro champion, was relegated to Round 2 while Wilson has been seeded directly into Round 3.
Julian is a good surfer he is one of those guys who youve started to hear about in the last two/three years and he has the talent, Slater said. He is one of those guys who comes from a free surfing background but he is starting to develop into a good contest surfer obviously, he won that heat.
Slater will next meet 19-year-old local wildcard Dale Richards (AUS), who alongside former three-time Fosters ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW), was sent to Round 2 at the hands of South African Greg Emslie.
I get Dale Richards now who obviously knows the wave real well, Slater said. He hasnt had the chance to surf these events before so well see if he can get himself real calm and just focus on what he is doing. If he doesnt get too distracted, he could do real well.
Richards won the Quiksilver Pro trials to earn main event entry and, in doing so, has become the first-ever indigenous Australian in a Fosters ASP World Tour event.
I guess I am the first indigenous surfer to make it one of these events so I feel real privileged to be that surfer, Richards said. Ive actually never really thought about competing against Slater, but Im looking forward to it now, definitely. Ive just seen him in the movies and watched his first heat, thats all.
Taj Burrow (AUS) was the third of the Top 5 seeded Fosters 45 surfers failing to advance straight through to Round 3 today. Although netting an impressive 9.27 out of a possible 10 for a beautiful series of carves and aerials, it was too little too late and he will have to battle his way out of the elimination Round 2.
Mick Fanning (AUS), No. 3 seed in the Quiksilver Pro, led a local charge today that saw Gold Coast surfers Joel Parkinson (AUS), Dean Morrison (AUS) and rookie sensation Josh Kerr (AUS) advance through their respective heats straight into Round 3.
Bobby Martinez (USA), 2006 Fosters ASP World Tour Rookie of the Year, is proving just as dangerous in 2007 netting the days high heat score 17.90 out of a possible 20.
This is a bonus to skip a round, Martinez said. Its nice because then you get to have a day off and you dont have to worry about the 33rd round which is never any fun. Last year I was just trying to requalify and thats what I am going to do again this year. Im not trying to get ahead of myself. Im just taking it heat by heat."
Of the 10 new faces on the 2007 Fosters ASP World Tour, six advanced straight to Round 3 today Leonardo Neves (BRA), Kai Otton (AUS), Ben Dunn (AUS), Josh Kerr (AUS), Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Ricky Basnett (ZAF) among them.
Event organizers are expecting an increase in swell size over the next few days due to a cyclone off of the Northern Queensland coast.
Next call will be 6am tomorrow.
