Billabong Pro Mundaka
Stop No. 8 of 10 on the 2007 Foster’s ASP World Tour
Mundaka, Euskadi, North of Spain
Oct. 2-14, 2007

THREE CONTENDERS LEFT IN ASP TITLE RACE AFTER 20 BILLABONG PRO HEATS

BAKIO, Spain
(Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007) – Foster’s ASP World Tour ratings
leader Mick Fanning (AUS) is two heats closer to clinching his maiden world
title after winning his Round 3 and 4 Billabong Pro duels today. Thing is,
reigning and 8X World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) and World No. 3 Taj Burrow
(AUS) aren’t ready to let him run away with it.

Twenty heats of Billabong Pro Mundaka competition were run in very contestable
three foot (one metre) waves in Bakio today. The first five heats of Round 4
saw five of eight Quarterfinalists decided late in the day; Fanning and Slater
were among them, former 2007 title contender Joel Parkinson (AUS) was not.

Fanning beat wildcard Hodei Collazo (EUK) in Round 3 before taking out fellow
Australian Luke Stedman in Round 4 to find himself in the Quarters.

“Luke had a 7.50 to start off with, but you just have to go out there and get
your waves,” Fanning said. “Steds is one of those guys who always tends to
get the best waves in the heat so I’m just stoked to get through that one.”

Fanning won the first Foster’s ASP World Tour of the year on the Gold Coast of
Australia as well as the last tour event in France. With a win here, Slater and
Burrow need to finish at least equal 3rd to take the title race to the next
stop in Brazil.

“If I can get three firsts the pressure really rolls back on to those two
guys,” Fanning said. “I just have to keep really focused and keep the heats
rolling hopefully.”

Slater posted a last-minute win over wildcard Tiago Pires (PRT) in Round 3, but
his elimination of Adriano de Souza (BRA) in Round 4 was much more convincing.
Into the Quarters, Slater knows better than anyone what he needs to do if he
plans to go for ASP World Title No. 9. According to him, he has to do it in
Spain.

“If I don’t beat Mick in this contest, I’m pretty much out of it,” Slater
said. “Right now I’m six heats behind Mick, if I finish one place behind him
here that means I’ll be seven heats behind him for the title, so I just need
to keep chugging along. It can happen so I feel pretty good a lot more
lively.”

Slater has been vocal about Joel Parkinson (AUS) being Australia’s next major
title contender in recent years, yet he finds himself alongside Burrow and
Fanning as the only three surfers still in the hunt.

“It doesn’t surprise me that it’s Mick in the race, it’s just that Joel has
always had such a natural talent from such a young age,” Slater said. “Joel
is just so naturally talented, but when you watch him he doesn’t seem as
driven as Mick. Mick is a work horse, he’s working harder than any of us out
here. He’s definitely more focused, definitely more prepared before his heats.
He’s just got this whole scene around him supporting him too, great support
from his girlfriend, his team manager and team sponsor, family and friends.
He’s created a great atmosphere for himself and it’s really working out for
him.”

Parkinson was eliminated by Philip Macdonald (AUS) in Round 4 today. His hopes
for a 2007 World Title were crushed as well. Despite finishing in the Top 10
last year, Macdonald finds himself several excellent results from requalifying
this year.

“I’m in a lost worse position than Joel is,” Macdonald said. “He’s gunning
for a World Title and I’m in 37th trying to get my spot back on the tour.
It’s bad luck that he’s no longer in the World Title race but I’m just
worrying about myself.”

Macdonald will meet defending champion Bobby Martinez (USA) in Quarterfinal 1.

After a Round 3 walk through, Martinez put on a commanding performance to take
out Bernardo Miranda (AUS) in the first heat of Round 4. A huge aerial and
throwaway wave scores in the excellent range were proof that despite his bye
(courtesy of a withdrawal by Australian Trent Munro) into Round 4, Martinez was
well deserving of his Quarterfinal berth.

“It was lucky for me that Trent went home,” Martinez said. “To get a bye, I
mean I’ve been struggling, so I’m going to take it. I’m just glad to have
made it and still be here competing in the event because I’ve lost in the 17th
round so many times this year.”

Title contender Burrow will have to ponder his Round 4 match-up against Royden
Bryson (ZAF) overnight, but if his nocturnal reveries are anything like last
night’s, he should be on the right track.

“I actually had a dream about it last night, a dream that I won this contest
and that everything opened back up again,” Burrow said. “It was a cool, a
nice little dream to wake up to. I’m not thinking about the World Title that
much… well, actually I am (laughing). But I’m just trying to think about the
contest, you know nail it the next couple of events, that’s what I really want
to do.”

Billabong Pro Mundaka Contest Director Mike Parsons will make another call on
the event status tomorrow morning at 8am. There are 10 heats left and three
days to run. Ideally, some surfing will be held at the main site of Mundaka.

“It looks like a slow drop in the swell throughout the day tomorrow, so we’re
hoping to at least get through Round 4 tomorrow,” Parsons said. “Ideally, in
a perfect world we’d get Mundaka Saturday for the Quarterfinals and finish at
Mundaka on Sunday. If there isn’t enough swell tomorrow at Mundaka first thing
in the morning we will most likely end up here at Bakio to finish Round 4 to
get into a position where we only have seven heats to go for the weekend.”

Video highlights from Round 3, along with photos, quotes and downloadable audio
files from the surfers, are available on www.aspworldtour.com and

BRETT SIMPSON LEADS TOP SEEDS AT O’NEILL COLD WATER CLASSIC PRES. BY JEEP

SANTA CRUZ, California
(Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007) – Brett Simpson (Huntington
Beach, CA) led the top-seeded surfers through the Round of 64 today at Day 3 of
the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS)
4-Star event, the final stop on the 2007 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf
Series presented by Jeep (an ASP North America Specialty Series), completed 8
heats of Round 4 today, seeing top-seeded surfers manhandle the punchy
three-to-four foot (1.5 metre) waves on offer at Santa Cruz’s Steamer Lane.

Simpson, current No. 47 on the ASP WQS ratings, immediately lifted the level of
competition in the Round of 64, netting the event high heat total of 17.60 out
of a possible 20.

“I was actually pretty nervous out there and felt really jittery on my first
couple of turns,” Simpson said. “After that first wave, I felt a lot more
comfortable and got into a good rhythm. My boards feel good and I’m stoked to
make it into another round.”

Although currently sitting in 47th on the ASP WQS, a strong result in Santa
Cruz could see Simpson jump up in the ratings before the remaining events of
the season.

“I’ve been on the road a lot this season, working on my qualifying seed,”
Simpson said. “I had a couple of results in Europe, but a result here would
put me in a good position before heading into the final leg of the season.”

Adam Virs (Ventura, CA), current ratings leader on the 2007 Macy’s California
Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep, kept his campaign alive today,
exhibiting solid experience at the venue and posting an impressive 15.86 out of
a possible 20.

“I’m feeling really comfortable out there,” Virs said. “I know there is a
lot going on with the Trifecta ratings, but I do my best to block that out and
just take it one heat at a time. It’s worked for me so far so I’ll just be
looking forward to the next heat.”

Virs will be joined by defending Macy’s Trifecta Champion and current No. 2
Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), who also advanced through his Round 4 heat
today, as well as several others looking to challenge for title.

The top three finishers on the 2007 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series
presented by Jeep will split a $15,000 bonus prize purse with the eventual
winner also receiving an all-new Jeep Patriot (valued at $26,000).

Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), reigning ASP North America Pro Junior
Champion, dominated the afternoon peaks in Round 3 of competition, looking
sharp and explosive en route to netting a solid 16.07 out of a possible 20.

“It was a slow start to the heat for me,” Geiselman said. “I kind of waited
until the last 10 minutes to get busy, but thankfully I found a couple of waves
that stood up for me.”

Geiselman will look to take the confidence gained from today’s performance in
the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep into tomorrow’s Oakley Pro
Junior ASP North America Championships, the first ASP Grade-3 in North American
history.

“A few of the guys have opted to not surf the ’QS event and just focus on the
junior, but I’m doing both,” Geiselman said. “I think the more experience
you can have out at the Lane the better. I’m extremely focused on the Pro
Junior event as there is a lot on the line.”

As the final event on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series, the Oakley
Pro Junior will play a deciding role in determining the top-4 junior surfers of
the season, who will then receive entry into the prestigious Billabong ASP
World Junior Championships next January.

Competition at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep is scheduled
to recommence tomorrow morning at 8am with Heat 9 of Round 4.

NAB Beachley Classic, Manly, Sydney
Stop No. 5 of 8 on the 2007 ASP Women's World Tour Manly Beach, Sydney,
Australia October 9- 14, 2007

SWELL ON THE WAY FOR NAB BEACHLEY CLASSIC WEEKEND SHOWDOWN

MANLY, Sydney
(Friday, Oct. 12, 2007) – Competition has been called off due to
a flat ocean at Sydney’s Manly Beach today but with a significant swell
forecast, the World’s Top 17 Women are in for an action packed weekend.

“We weren’t supposed to see this southerly change until tomorrow which is
sort of a positive thing,” Contest Directory Matt Wilson said. “It means we
should start to see the arrival of new swell this afternoon instead of tomorrow
morning, which sets us up for quite a good weekend.”

With an increase in swell and favourable winds expected, organisers of Stop No.
5 of 8 on the ASP Women’s World Tour are confident that the remaining 15 heats
will run in the best waves possible.

“At this stage we’re looking at a Sunday finish, unless tomorrow is really
epic,” Wilson continued. “We are expecting a strong offshore breeze but if we
get a slight swing in the easterly direction, it could push some swell in which
would mean waves of up two 2 metres rolling into Manly over the next two
days.”

7X ASP World Champion and event namesake Layne Beachley (AUS) is looking
forward to the eventful weekend that lies ahead. The undisputed surfing
sensation will be a treat to watch when she takes on wildcard surfer Sally
Fitzgibbons (AUS) in Round 3.

“This week has flown by, I can’t believe its Friday and we’ve only run two
rounds,” Beachley said. “Everything has run smoothly so far, I think because
we knew what we were in for and with promising swell on the horizon, I am
confident we’ll see good waves at the weekend.”

The two remaining days of the six day window will see the business end of this
year’s NAB Beachley Classic underway with Round 3 and will run through four
rounds before the 2007 NAB Beachley Classic Champion is crowned.

In addition to the surfing, Saturday includes the Beachley Classic Radical
Fitness Day, a fun day for the public to test their strength, flexibility and
fitness levels.

Sunday sees the Lifestyle Working Celebrity Surf Challenge, featuring
Australia’s best loved celebrities who will participate in numerous beach
activities in aid of Beachley’s charity, Aim for the Stars.

The Aim for the Stars charity was founded by Beachley in 2003 to assist women
in achieving their dreams.

“As women, we tend to think we’re not capable of doing something until we see
another woman doing it,” Beachley commented. “I am all about empowering girls
to go out there and believe in their dreams and continue following them.”

An inspiration to women across the globe Beachley, who has achieved more in
surfing than any other female surfer, came close to quitting the tour due to
financial difficulties in the early 1990’s, when she was rated World No 2.

“Back when I was a kid I used to talk myself up about how I would be the best
surfer in the world,” Beachley said. “Then I almost walked away from it all
when I was living on $8000 a year and struggling to get by. I would have walked
away from all of this! That’s why I set up the charity to prevent girls from
walking away from their dreams.”

The NAB Beachley Classic needs just one full day of surfing to be completed.
The next call will be made at 7.30am on Saturday morning.

The NAB Beachley Classic runs from 9- 14 October, 2007 and holds a prize money
purse of US$ 100 000 as well as 20% bonus ASP ratings points.

The event is produced by Layne Beachley in collaboration with National
Australia Bank and the Association of Surfing Professionals.

BIG SURF AND BIG SCORES DAY 2 O’NEILL COLD WATER CLASSIC PRES. BY JEEP

SANTA CRUZ, California
(Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007) – The surf increased
overnight with solid four-to-six foot (2 metre) waves pulsing through Steamer
Lane for Day 2 of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep, and
competitors rose to the improved conditions, exhibiting some of the most
dynamic surfing of the season.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS)
4-Star event holds a lot on the line with the $75,000 prize purse as well as
valuable qualifying points, but the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by
Jeep also carries the added prestige of being the final event on the 2007
Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep (an ASP North America
Specialty Series).

The Macy’s Trifecta culminates at Steamer Lane, offering an additional $15,000
prize purse to the top 3 finishers, as well as an all-new Jeep Patriot, valued
at $26,000, to the eventual champion.

Jay Phillips (Gold Coast, AUS), in his first-ever competition at the O’Neill
Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep, posted impressive wins in both his Round
1 and Round 2 heats today, dominating the punchy righthanders on his forehand
and netting the event high single-wave score of an 8.83 out of a possible 10.

“I’m so happy to be here as it’s my first time ever surfing Steamer Lane,”
Phillips said. “I’ve brought the family and we’re really just enjoying the
beauty up here. I’m extremely comfortable out there having surfed pointbreaks
my entire life. I think today, the conditions are washing through a little
bit, but there are still some great waves to be had.”

Once touted as one of Australia’s greatest exports, Phillips has taken a brief
sabbatical from professional competition, but the recent exploits of his fellow
countrymen have reignited the competitive flame.

“Back home, Mick (Fanning) and Dean (Morrison) and Joel (Parkinson) have been
telling me that they want to see a Jay Phillips comeback,” Phillips said.
“Seeing those guys doing so well at that level has really motivated me to give
it a go again. At the moment, I’m just competing in select events, but I think
the Cold Water is an event I could do really well at, and I would love to claw
my way onto the Dream Tour.”

Dane Ward (San Clemente, CA) caused a big upset today in eliminating local
favorite Josh Mulcoy (Santa Cruz, CA) from O’Neill Cold Water Classic
competition. Facing Mulcoy, another Santa Cruz standout in Josh Loya as well
as fellow junior Blake Jones (Melbourne Beach, FL), Ward wasted no time,
racking up an impressive 8.00 out of a possible 10 for blistering series of
backhand hacks.

“I’ve been watching heats all day and the guys who catch a lot of waves get
through the heats,” Ward said. “I thought Loya was going to go, but he
didn’t and that wave stood up really well. I’m stoked I got the score and
I’m looking forward to getting through a few more heats.”

In addition to his campaign in the ASP WQS 4-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic
presented by Jeep, Ward will also be competing in the Oakley Pro Junior ASP
North America Championships, the first ASP Grade-3 in North American history,
which will begin on Friday, Oct. 12, 2007.

“Definitely making it through a few heats in the WQS event builds the
confidence heading into the juniors of Friday,” Ward said. “I need a pretty
solid result to claw my way into the top 4 for Australia so I’ll just be
taking it heat by heat until then.”

As the final event on the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series, the Oakley
Pro Junior will play a deciding role in determining the top-4 junior surfers of
the season, who will then receive entry into the prestigious Billabong ASP
World Junior Championships next January.

Competition at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep is scheduled
to recommence tomorrow morning at 8am with Heat 1 of Round 3.

CONTESTABLE CONDITIONS SEE ROUND 2 UNDERWAY AT MANLY

MANLY, Sydney
(Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007) – A two hour wait for conditions to

TWO FEMALE JUDGES JOIN ASP INTERNATIONAL JUDGING PANEL AT NAB BEACHLEY CLASSIC

MANLY, Sydney
(Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007) – After an explosive day of Round 1
action during the ASP Women’s World Tour NAB Beachley Classic yesterday,
small, onshore conditions at Sydney’s Manly Beach this morning, forced
organisers to call the first lay day of the six day window period.

“The conditions this morning where what we expected to see yesterday,”
Contest Director Matt Wilson said. “Luckily we were able to run six heats due
to a surprise push in swell on Tuesday, so in my mind we’re actually six heats
ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, conditions did not improve with the outgoing
tide this morning, so there was no need to run.”

The forecast looks promising for the next two days and surfers, organisers and
judges alike are looking forward to getting back to business at Manly Beach, on
Thursday and Friday.

The NAB Beachley Classic stands alone as the richest of the eight stops on the
ASP Women’s World Tour and is also unique in that two, of its five- person
judging panel, are women.

Former professional Australian surfer Holly Monkman (Coolangatta), 28, and
Chilean Marcela Garido (Florianopolis, Brazil), 26, have joined the
international judging panel under Head Judge Richard Porta, at this year’s NAB
Beachley Classic.

Both women have made their debut on an ASP Women’s World Tour judging panel at
this event and have left a good impression on Porta, as well as well as the
World’s Top 17 Women.

“They both worked really well through both the Trials as well as Round 1
yesterday,” Porta said. “It’s not imperative to have female judges on the
panel but it gives the girls’ some faith that it’s not all a man’s world out
there. Both these women are good judges. They are not there because they are
female, they can judge and that’s the bottom line.”

As per ASP International guidelines, the NAB Beachley Classic judging panel is
made up of four judges, with one rotating judge that slots in every fourth
heat. The panel is overseen by the head judge, in this case Porta, who checks
the scores, controls the timing and makes sure no-one misses a thing.

Monkman’s extensive experience as a former professional surfer, professional
ASP Women’s World Tour commentator and qualified surfing coach with numerous
hours logged judging smaller junior events, state rounds and Australian Title
events, as well as the 6-Star Prime ASP World Qualifying Series in Margaret
River earlier in the year, makes her well qualified for this position.

“I’ve been working in the surfing industry for a long time now and one thing
it’s taught me is how to change hats,” Monkman said. “I really do enjoy
being in the judging tower and dissecting and comparing rides. I find it comes
naturally to me and I have been watching the girls surf for so many years now
that I can tell when they’re surfing their best and when they’re not quite on
form.”

Garido, made her way onto this year’s NAB Beachley Classic panel through her
experience judging the National Series in Brazil, as well as her work for
Surfing Australia. After good reports all round, the recreational surfer and
qualified international judge was included on this year’s panel.

“I studied Sports Management in Brazil and as a surfer, I always wanted to
know more about the rules of the sport,” Garido said, of her inspiration to
become a surfing judge. “I did my judging course and started working on events
as a judging officer in Brazil until this opportunity came up to work in
Australia. The level of Women’s surfing is inspiring and it’s such a
privilege to work alongside some of the world’s best judges at this event.”

Four rounds of the NAB Beachley Classic remain, which will see Porta’s panel
bring ASP International judging criteria into play in deciphering the eventual
winner, of what has been sighted as the most important stop on this years ASP
Women’s World Tour, given the 20% bonus points on offer.

“The judging criteria for the women’s events are exactly the same as for the
men’s,” Porta explained. “It’s all about speed, power and flow, and
completing manoeuvres in the most critical part of the wave. We judge the way
we’d like to surf so, if you surf with risk and commitment you’ll get the
scores. We surf because it gives us a rush and that’s how we judge.”

The next call will be made at 07.30am tomorrow morning.

MUNDAKA, Spain
(Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007) –The 16 Foster’s ASP World Tour
surfers who won their Round 1 Billabong Pro Mundaka heats haven’t donned a
jersey since the first day of the waiting period over a week ago. They won’t
wear one today either, the Billabong Pro Mundaka is off again.

Two full days of surfing remain to be run before a champion will be crowned.
There are five days left in the Billabong Pro Mundaka waiting period and
according to contest officials, competition may have to head back to the
back-up beach break of Bakio tomorrow. Conditions suitable enough to run
competition at the official sit of Mundaka have yet to materialize.

“Overall, it is still looking like an inconsistent week to run heats at
Mundaka,” Kevin Wallis of Surfline.com said. “While it will have its moments
on Thursday and Friday, they’ll be pretty short windows with the westerly
swell and extreme tides. There should still be plenty of contestable waves at
Bakio and the weekend swell does look better”

When competition does recommence, the first heat of the day will be a bye for
defending champion Bobby Martinez (USA). Martinez was supposed to meet injury
replacement surfer Trent Munro (AUS), but Munro has pulled out of competition
citing family reasons.

World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS) will face wildcard and local Basque surfer Hodei
Collazo (EUK) in Round 3. Reigning and 8X World Champion Kelly Slater (USA)
will meet wildcard Tiago Pires (PRT) in Round 3 while World No. 3 Taj Burrow

TRIALISTS THRIVE IN DAY 1 OF O’NEILL COLD WATER CLASSIC PRES. BY JEEP

Santa Cruz, California
(Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007) – Day 1 of the O’Neill Cold
Water Classic presented by Jeep was called this afternoon following the
completion of six heats of Round 1.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS)
4-Star event kicked off this morning in clean-yet-inconsistent one-to-three
foot (0.5 metre) surf at the main venue of Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz,
California.

Opening the first day of competition with the 16-man Locals Trials, the
O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep saw Lane specialists Anthony
Ruffo (Santa Cruz, CA), Johnny Craft (Carmel, CA), Tyler Smith (Santa Cruz, CA)
and Cory Kvenild (Santa Cruz, CA) all receive entry into the main event.

Following the completion of the Locals Trials, the Round of 160 of the O’Neill
Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep got underway with the international field
of competitors attacking the loping righthanders with gusto despite the
inconsistent conditions.

Ruffo, competing in his third decade at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic,
managed to advance through to Round 2 along with fellow trialist Craft.

“I was lucky that I grabbed a couple of runners out there as there is not much
pushing through,” Ruffo said. “I’ve been competing in this event so long
that I’m always comfortable out there despite the competition. Hope the waves
will improve and the locals will be able to shine in the upcoming days.”

Clay Marzo (Lahaina, HI) wrapped the day’s competition by netting the highest
single-wave score of the event, an 8.00 out of a possible 10, for a series of
blistering backhand maneuvers on one bigger sets of the day.

“It’s pretty cold out there, but I’m stoked I got through that first
round,” Marzo said. “That wave came through out there and I was all by
myself so I was stoked to get it. That was really the only score I was able to
get out there.”

As the third and final event of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series
presented by Jeep, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep will be
the deciding battleground for competitors slugging it out for the $15,000 prize
purse as well as an all-new Jeep Patriot.

Wavewatch.com, the official forecasters of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic
presented by Jeep, have called for a solid fetch of Northwest swell to come in
overnight along with some stormy weather, and expect the swell to remain for
the next few days.

The next call will be made at 7:30am tomorrow for a possible 8am start.

When O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep recommences, Heat 7 of Round
1 will be first in the water.

BILLABONG PRO ROUND 3 OFF AGAIN – FIVE DAYS LEFT IN WAITING PERIOD

MUNDAKA, Spain
(Tuesday, Oct. 9 2007) –The Billabong Pro Mundaka, Stop 8 of 10
on the Foster’s ASP World Tour, is off again today. Five days remain in the
event waiting period with two full days of surfing needed to complete the
event.

Surfline.com is the official Billabong Pro forecaster.

According to Surfline’s Kevin Wallis: “Even smaller surf prevails Tuesday as
the NW swell offers just leftovers and mixes with a small, new W swell. We’ve
got a complex low pressure system taking hold in the Atlantic right now, which
will continue for the next 3-4 days. This will produce a series of W to WNW
swells starting around Wednesday evening (with Wednesday morning looking quite
slow) and continuing through early Friday. Another round of WNW to NW swell
could then build late Saturday and into Sunday.”

Collazo defeated 3X World Champion Andy Irons
yesterday. Reigning and 8X World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) will meet wildcard
Tiago Pires (PRT) in Round 3 while World No. 3 Taj Burrow (AUS) draws the final
wildcard, Aritz Aranburu (EUK) in Heat 13.

Another call on competition will be made at 8am tomorrow.

WILDCARD FITZGIBBONS OUTSURFS BEACHLEY TO ADVANCE INTO ROUND THREE

MANLY, Sydney
(Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007) – Demonstrating all the attributes of a
future world beater, ASP Australasian Junior Champion and wildcard surfer Sally
Fitzgibbons (Aus) edged out 7X ASP World Champion Layne Beachley (Aus), during
Round 1 of the ASP Women’s World Tour NAB Beachley Classic, at Sydney’s Manly
Beach, today.

Fitzgibbons won the Oakley Wildcard Trials on Monday to advance into the main
event. Her superior paddling power and deliberate tactics saw her out-class
Beachley, to post the highest two-wave heat total of the event, a 15.65 (out of
a possible 20.00 points).

“I am just over the moon!” Fitzgibbons said after her win which also included
the day’s highest individual wave score, an 8.50 (out of 10.00). “I went out
there and got those couple of rides I needed, I didn’t expect to get that far
ahead. I’m just super happy.”

Surfing through five rounds of competition during the Oakley Wildcard Trials on
Monday, Fitzgibbons went on to reveal her true talent against the world’s best
during Round 1, advancing seamlessly into Round 3.

“Surfing the trials helped me to familiarise myself with the banks at Manly,”
Fitzgibbons said. “Even though the conditions were totally different out there
today, it was still similar and I was just lucky to get the waves I needed.”

Beachley, who finished in second place, was put to the test by Fitzgibbons’s
exceptional wildcard performance. The 7X ASP World Champion clawed her way back
from a potential Round 2 fate, with a 6.10 ride which saw her advance ahead of
Claire Bevilacqua (Aus) in the dying minutes of their Round 1 clash.

“I’ve been surfing out here my whole life,” Beachley said. “That’s why I
am so frustrated right now because I know where to surf and which waves to
catch. I just didn’t do that today. It was a valuable lesson and I will have
to make up for it during the next round.”

Beachley and Fitzgibbons are scheduled to meet again in Round 3.

Defending NAB Beachley Classic Champion Stephanie Gilmore (Aus) maintained her
wildcard mindset which saw her win this event in 2006. Posting the second
highest two-wave heat total of the day a 15.10, Gilmore outshone her fellow
Heat 6 competitors Melanie Bartels (Haw) and Melanie Redman-Carr (Aus).

“I’m in a totally different position this year,” Gilmore explained. “There
are ratings points and world titles that I should be aiming for and not
thinking about but I am. I tried to stay on Sally’s wavelength today, which
was to have fun and keep surfing good.”

Losing her ASP ratings lead to Samantha Cornish in Spain, Gilmore is aware of
how much is at stake for both herself as well as her fellow top five
campaigners at this event.

“If any of the girls in the top five were to get a win here, they could really
get away from the pack and that would make things extremely hard going into the
last three events,” Gilmore said. “I am at World No. 4 which is good and I’m
still in with a shot at the World Title”.

Current World No. 3 Sofia Mulanovich (Per) produced another signature
performance that has seen her climb the ASP ratings ladder this year. Winning
her Round 1 heat with excellent 8.00 and 7.00 point rides, the 2004 ASP World
Champion defeated Leilani Gryde (Haw) who replaced ‘no- show’ surfer Rochelle
Ballard (Haw) and Megan Abubo (Haw) in Heat 4.

Also advancing in first place were World No. 1 Samantha Cornish (Aus) who
posted the first 8.00 ride of the day over Jacqueline Silva (Bra) and Rebecca
Woods (Aus); South African Rosy Hodge who captured a surprise Round 1 victory
over World No. 2 Silvana Lima (Bra) and Amee Donohoe (Aus) and Jessi Miley-Dyer
(Aus), who slipped into top gear to defeat World No. 5 Chelsea Hedges (Aus) and
Caroline Sarran (Fra).

All six heats of Round 1 where completed before the competition was called off
due to unfavourable winds. Conditions will be reassessed and another call made
at 07h30 tomorrow morning.

JORDY SMITH GREEN-LIGHTED AT O’NEILL COLD WATER CLASSIC PRES. BY JEEP

Santa Cruz, California
(Monday, Oct. 8, 2007) – Jordy Smith (Durban, ZAF),
current No. 1 on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World
Qualifying Series (WQS) and reigning ASP World Junior Champion, has been given
a wildcard to compete at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep in
Santa Cruz from Oct. 9 through 14, 2007.

The ASP WQS 4-Star event will host 160 of the best surfers in the world as they
vie for the $75,000 prize purse as well as valuable ratings points. Smith, who
has already secured a spot on the prestigious ASP World Tour in 2008, will
enter the draw in the Round of 64.

“I have been in America for ages and I like the wave at Steamer Lane,” Smith
said. “I have qualified already so I am going to go where I can get the best
waves possible.”

Joining Smith as wildcards into the event will be Hawaiian wunderkind John John
Florence (North Shore, HI) and local phenom Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA).

“I’m really looking forward to surfing against the local guys,” Smith said.
“They are always out there. They’re probably the best so it will be good to
surf against them.”

In addition to shaking things up in the hunt for qualifying points and prize
money, the wildcards will also wreak havoc upon the current standings in the
Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep (an ASP North America
Specialty Series).

As the final event of the ’07 Trifecta race, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic
will decide who walks away with the $15,000 bonus prize purse for the top three
performers as well as an all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot.

Adam Virs (Ventura, CA), current ratings leader on the Macy’s California
Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep, has made three finals this season on
the ASP North America Men’s Tour, and will be a major threat at the O’Neill
Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep should he retain his consistent form.

Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), defending Macy’s California Trifecta
Champion and current No. 2 on this year’s ratings, posted a sensational
Trifecta win with a solid result in the 2006 O’Neill Cold Water Classic, and
will look to repeat history this week. The dynamic goofy-footer is separated
from ratings-leader Virs by less than 150 points and could potentially overtake
should he outperform the competition in the running righthanders of Steamer
Lane.

In addition to the ASP WQS 4-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by
Jeep, the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series will culminate with the ASP
North America Pro Junior Championships, the ASP Grade-3 Oakley Pro Junior,
which will play a deciding role in determining qualifiers for January’s
prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.

The first ASP Grade-3 Pro Junior event in North American history, the Oakley
Pro Junior will offer more points than any event before it and will either make
or break the campaigns of the best junior surfers in the nation.

Wavewatch, official forecasters of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic, have called
for swell to be present throughout the waiting period, with several days seeing
overhead surf, from a slew of activity in the Pacific Northwest.

BEACHLEY WELCOMES WILDCARD CHALLENGE AT NAB BEACHLEY CLASSIC

MANLY, Sydney
(Monday, Oct. 8, 2007) – Seven times ASP Women’s World Champion
Layne Beachley (AUS) has vowed not to let history repeat itself at her own ASP
Women’s World Tour event, the NAB Beachley Classic, which kicks off at
Sydney’s Manly Beach tomorrow.

Beachley was defeated by wildcard surfer and current ASP World No. 4 Stephanie
Gilmore (Aus) at the inaugural event in 2006 and has expressed her excitement
at taking up the challenge of facing this year’s wildcard Sally Fitzgibbins
(AUS), during Round 1.

“Last year I was kicking myself for inviting Steph Gilmore but this year I am
just open to the wildcard challenge,” Beachley said at the official NAB
Beachley Classic press conference, today. “I’m loving what surfing is
producing. There is so much talent coming through the ranks, especially from
the Australians and they are inspiring me to be a better surfer.”

One of the world’s most accomplished water women, Beachley has also developed
into a successful business woman, producing the richest stop on the ASP
Women’s World Tour while maintaining a top ten position on the ASP ratings.

“I think one of the greatest things about being on the tour now is being
inspired by all the girls around me,” Beachley explained. “It’s exciting to
see and it drives me to continue competing and to put more back into women’s
surfing.”

Fitzgibbons emerged as the overall standout through five rounds of competition
during the Oakley Wildcard trials this morning. The sixteen-year-old ASP
Australasian champion disposed of Sage Erickson (USA) in the final, advancing
into the main event.

“I’m super stoked,” Fitzgibbons said after her win. “I just went out there
to surf my own heat and get a few waves and I kept getting through heats and
made it into the final.”

Fitzgibbons faces Beachley and World No. 14 Claire Bevilacqua (Aus) in Heat 3
of Round 1 when the NAB Beachley Classic gets underway later this week.

“I haven’t really thought about taking Layne on in Round 1,” Fitzgibbons
admitted. “It’s just a dream come true to have this opportunity to surf in an
ASP Women’s World Tour event and I hope we get some waves.”

With the top four rated surfers separated by the narrowest of margins, the
bonus points on offer at the Manly event are expected to significantly impact
the ASP ratings. For a surfer such as Beachley, who is rated World No. 7, this
event could make or break her campaign for that World No. 1 spot going into the
final leg in Hawaii.

“Given that I have had a challenging season to date, I am looking forward to
turning my whole year around at this event,” Beachley said. “Ofcourse the
bonus will be an enormous advantage to everyone, but none more than the victor.
Considering the closeness of the title race this year, these extra points could
have a significant impact on each and every competitor.”

Samantha Cornish (Aus) currently holds down the World No. 1 spot ahead of
Brazilian sensation Silvana Lima (Brz) who is close behind her at World No. 2.

2004 ASP World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (Per) is fresh off a victory in Spain
and at World No. 3 will be in fighting form, while former joint ASP ratings
leaders Stephanie Gilmore (Aus) and Chelsea Hedges (Aus) lie at 4th and 5th
respectively.

The first heat in the water sees Cornish take on World No. 6 Rebecca Woods
(Aus) and World No. 12 Jacqueline Silva (AUS).

The NAB Beachley Classic runs from 9- 14 October, 2007 and is the richest stop
on the ASP Women’s World Tour. The event holds a prizemoney purse of US$ 100
000 as well as 20% bonus ASP ratings points.

The event is produced by Layne Beachley in collaboration with National
Australia Bank and the Association of Surfing Professionals.

BILLABONG PRO MUNDAKA ROUND 2 RUNS IN BAKIO – IRONS LOSES TO LOCAL

MUNDAKA, Spain
(Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007) – Three-time World Champion Andy Irons
(HAW) was ushered out of the Billabong Pro Mundaka, and likely the 2007
Foster’s ASP World Tour title race, by Basque wildcard Hodei Callazo (EUK)
today. The loss is Iron’s third exit at the hands of wildcard this year.

Round 2 of the Billabong Pro Mundaka was held in three foot (one metere) waves
at the back-up site of Bakio where Callazo overcame Irons 9.83 to 8.23 in Heat
2 – the lowest scoring heat of the day. Callazo, a local surfer, was given
wildcard berths into the event in 2003, 2004 and 2006 as well, but his
elimination of the Current World No. 5 today is by far his best result.

“The feeling is great, I don’t know really how to describe it,” Callazo
said. “Andy is the best surfer that I’ve ever beaten.”

Callazo gave local crowds something to cheer about when he went head to head
with reigning and 8X World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) in a close heat last
year, but his victory today had his supporters on their feet.

“I felt really good, even before that heat,” Callazo said. “Everyone was
cheering me on and supporting me. I just try to forget who is in my heat and
enjoy surfing. The next heat I plan to do the same thing, I don’t care who it
is. I just want to enjoy myself and do the best I can.”

Irons’ 33rd place finish today is his second of the season and when added to
the equal 17th places he posted in California and France, virtually removes him
from Foster’s ASP World Tour title contention. Irons was World Champion in
2002, 2003 and 2004 and runner-up to reigning and 8X World Champion Kelly
Slater (USA) in 2005 and 2006.

Taj Burrow (AUS) kept his title hopes alive with a convincing victory over
wildcard Manoa Drollet (PYF) in the first heat of the day. The current World
No. 3 has had to contest Round 2 in seven of eight events this year. With the
exception of an equal 33rd finish at Lower Trestles in California, Burrow has
advanced from the early elimination round each time.

“I feel good for sure and I’ve got a good board for these conditions,”
Burrow said. “The waves are good for doing airs and stuff like that and I like
fooling around in little waves. Hopefully I can just get on a little roll and
get some confidence going. I’m aiming to win this contest so I plan to just
take it heat by heat.”

Burrow has won two events this year, and along with Slater, is the closest
title contender current ratings leader Mick Fanning (AUS) has. Fanning won the
Foster’s ASP World Tour event in France last week while Burrow lost to Joel
Parkinson (AUS) in the Quarterfinals.

“It was frustrating to lose in France and see how fun the little waves were
and how good Mick was surfing,” Burrow said. “I so badly wanted to be amongst
them and win another event. Unfortunately I missed out, so this one I’m just
hungry to win. I’ve got nothing to lose so I’m just going to give it my best
shot.”

Portugese wildcard Tiago Pires beat Hawaii’s Pancho Sullivan, who is rated 6th
on the Foster’s ASP World Tour, in Heat 3. Pires, who has already qualified
for the elite tour next year, opened his account with an 8.50 and led the
entire heat.

“I’m really happy about that heat,” Pires said. “It’s always great to beat
one of the top guys. It was a little bit stressful because I haven’t been
competing in any World Tour events for a couple of years now. I’m just trying
to concentrate on being calm as much as possible. It went well because I got a
good start from the beginning and when it came to the end I was pretty
confident with my surfing.”

Rookie Gabe Kling (USA) won his heat against Dean Morrison (AUS) today. Kling
posted the event’s highest wave score, a 9.60 out of 10.00, and the day’s
highest heat total 16.77 out of 20.00 to come out on top in his first Foster’s
ASP World Tour man-on-man heat.

“It’s my first win really,” Kling said. “I won a first round heat in Tahiti
but that was the first man-on-man heat I’ve ever won.”

With the exception of at 17th in Tahiti, the Floridian has posted last place
finishes at every event before this one. He will not requalify via the World
Tour, but is in strong contention to do so via the ASP World Qualifying Series
(WQS) where he currently sits 16th. The top 16 surfers on the WQS earn World
Tour berths the following year.

Fourteen-year veteran Victor Ribas (BRA) was among the Brazilians to advance
today. Sitting 39th on the World Tour, and without a WQS safety net rating to
fall back on, Ribas knows he needs to perform exceptionally for the remainder
of the season. Ribas beat Bruce Irons (HAW).

“The heat wasn’t a very strong heat,” Ribas said. “In the beginning of the
heat I had a little bit of an advantage leading, but then I was having some
trouble improving my low score with only eight minutes left in the heat. I
finally got another 6.0 and all Bruce needed was a 5.0 something. I think that
I deserved to win that heat because I’ve been focusing a lot for the event. I
knew I needed to get a good result here if I want to continue to surf on the
World Championship Tour. I plan on staying focused in my heat with Tom Whitaker
next.”

Five of the six Brazilians relegated to Round 2 won their heats today.

South Africans Greg Emslie and Ricky Basnett won the last two heats of the day.
Emslie beat Troy Brooks (AUS) with a wave he caught in the last 30 seconds of
the heat.

“It’s been pretty tough out there,” Emslie said. “If you get two turns in
on a wave you’re pretty lucky. You never know when the waves are going to
close out so I just did one quick turn and then gave my second turn everything
I had. I’m just really happy I got that last one.”

Emslie comes into the Billabong Pro Mundaka fresh from a runner-up finish in
France last week. The result was the best of Emslie’s eight-year career, not
to mention the best result a South African had posted in 20 years.

“It’s kind of a bummer that this event came so soon after the France one
because I didn’t really have time to enjoy my 2nd place finish before this one
started. I’m stoked with the win today, so I’m going to go home, try to get
to sleep early and not think about what I might have to do tomorrow. Hopefully
we get some good Mundaka tomorrow though!”

Heat 1 of Round 3 was slated to feature reigning Billabong Pro Mundaka Champion
Bobby Martinez (USA) and injury replacement surfer Trent Munro (AUS).
Unfortunately, Munro has withdrawn from the event citing family reasons.
Martinez will earn a bye and a call on the commencement of Round 3 Heat 2 will
be made at 8am in Mundaka tomorrow.

BRAD ETTINGER WINS NO FEAR MEXICAN SURF FIESTA

San Miguel, Baja California
(Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007) – Brad Ettinger
(Huntington Beach, CA) claimed the 2007 No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta in
consistent three-to-five foot (2 metre) surf at Baja California’s San Miguel
over fellow finalists Billy Kemper (Maui, HI), Adam Virs (Ventura, CA) and Evan
Valiere (Kilauea, HI).

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS)
2-Star event finished a day early to stem off the projected poor conditions on
the final day of the waiting period. Despite the early finish, howling 20-30
knot winds blew the morning glassy conditions to shreds, creating a
“victory-at-sea”- like atmosphere for the hard fought final.

Ettinger, who sat in fourth for the majority of the heat, scored a sensational
last-minute victory by lighting up a running righthander with some searing
carves on his backhand. The wave garnered him a solid 8.25 out of a possible
10 and rocketed Ettinger from 4th to 1st.

Virs secured his third finals berth of the 2007 ASP North America season, but
was unable to come home with the win. The phenomenal natural-footer will use
his momentum from the last two events as he heads up to Santa Cruz next week.

Nick Rozsa (Oxnard, CA) put in one of the top performances of the day, netting
a 16.25 out of a possible 20 in the Round of 32, before onshore winds came in
and wreaked havoc. Rozsa would go on to finish equal 9th.

Michael Hoisington (Huntington Beach, CA) posted the day’s highest single-wave
of a 9.50 out of a possible 10 for a blister series of forehand hacks, also in
the Round of 32. Hoisington would go on to finish equal 13th.

Next stop on the 2007 ASP North America Men’s Tour is the ASP WQS 4-Star
O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep beginning this Tuesday, October
9, at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz.

MUNDAKA, Spain
(Friday, Oct. 5, 2007) – The Billabong Pro Mundaka will not run
today. After assessing conditions at both Mundaka and the back-up site at
Bakio, Round 2 of competition has been officially called off.

“It was a tough call today because there is a fair bit of swell but the banks
here at Bakio are really straight and are closing out,” Contest Director Mike
Parsons said. “We have eight days left in the waiting period and a lot can
change here in Europe so we’re going to gamble a little bit. We’re expecting
another little swell on Sunday and Monday so we’re going to see what happens
then. We’re still hoping the weather maps will change and toward the end of
the waiting period we’ll get some good Mundaka, but between now and then
we’ll probably have to surf again here at Bakio – it just wasn’t good enough
today.”

CARISSA MOORE LEADS HAWAIIAN ASSAULT AT DAY 1 NO FEAR MEXICAN SURF FIESTA

San Miguel, Baja California
(Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007) – The Hawaiian contingent
dominated Day 1 of the No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta in the one-to-three foot (1
metre) surf at Baja California’s San Miguel.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS)
2-Star event commenced this morning with the Round of 128 and ran all the way
through the first two heats of the Round of 96 before the day finished.

Although the international field looked solid on the opening day of
competition, it was the Hawaiian contingent that stood above the pack. Female
phenom Carissa Moore (Waikiki, HI), Kai Barger (Haiku, HI) and Alex Smith
(Kilauea, HI) led the assault, netting the day’s highest scores.

“All three Hawaiians dominated by reading the pointbreak perfectly,” ASP
North America Head Judge Jeff Klugel said. “They timed their turns and linked
their maneuvers.”

Moore, who entered into the men’s event as an alternate, put the rest of the
draw on notice this afternoon, scalping a perfect 10 for a full-rail assault on
San Miguel’s cobblestone peaks.

“She absolutely scored to the men’s standard,” Klugel said. “Top to
bottom, full-rail turns and finished with a reverse.”

Barger generated the day’s highest heat total of a 17.25 out of a possible 20
for his impressive backhand power and looks to be a major threat in the rounds
to come.

The swell is projected to hold over the next couple of days before dropping in
the latter half of the weekend. Event organizers will look to get as much
competition completed while conditions permit

BILLABONG PRO MUNDAKA MOVES TO BAKIO TO RUN ROUND 1

MUNDAKA, Spain
(Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007) – Round 1 of the Billabong Pro Mundaka,
Stop No. 8 of 10 on the Foster’s ASP World Tour, commenced at Bakio at
10:30am. Conditions at the mobile site, which is a 30 minute drive from the
main event site in Mundaka, are two to three foot (one metre) this morning.

The surf is two to three feet but it’s closing out some,” Contest Director
Mike Parsons said. “There is enough surf here in Bakio but the banks aren’t
very good so we’re going to have to make do.”

The decision to run today was made citing a rule which states that if the first
round doesn’t run in the first two days of the Billabong Pro Mundaka waiting
period, Round 2 is dropped and the surfer who finishes last in the three-man
Round 1 heats is eliminated right away. This rule is specific to this event
and was made because of the at-times fickle nature of the wave.

“It was voted on for this event that we would have to run the first round in
the first two days, otherwise the third place surfer would lose out on surfing
the following round,” Parsons said. “The surfers were aware of the situation,
Mundaka is a hard wave to get. We have a nice long waiting period so we want to
give everyone the normal two chances, so the decision was made by the surfer’s
rep, myself and the head judge that it’s contestable and we’re going to go
today. The goal is to get all sixteen heats done.”

The first heat of the event will feature France’s Jeremy Flores and
Australians Troy Brooks and Michael Lowe. Log onto www.aspworldtour.com and

MANCORA PERU CLASSIC ADDED TO 2007 ASP WOMEN’S WORLD TOUR

COOLANGATTA, Australia
(Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007) –The ASP Women’s World Tour
will add a jewel to its crown with the addition of the Mancora Peru Classic
slated to run from Oct. 30 – Nov. 4, 2007. 2005 ASP Women’s World Champion
Sofia Mulanovich (PER), who was instrumental in the addition of the event, is
following in the footsteps of reigning and 7X World Champion Layne Beachley
(AUS) by bringing an elite tour event to one of her home breaks.

“The spot is Northern Peru and it is a fun left called Mancora,” Mulanovich
said. “I used to go up north every time I had school vacations and surf my
head off. My parents have a house there and it is a cool little town with
amazing long lefts everywhere.”

The addition of the Mancora Peru Classic to this year’s calendar will mean
that the 2007 ASP Women’s World Title will now be decided by eight events,
versus the seven originally scheduled.

“The Peru contest has been tentative for a couple of years now, because the
Peruvian government and sponsors have been wanting to do an ASP Women’s World
Tour event for awhile and now they have made it happen this year,” Mulanovich
said. “I am stoked because I have never competed in a World Tour event at
home.”

Fresh off a win at the last Women’s World Tour event in Spain, the current
World No. 3 will no doubt capitalize on the opportunity to compete at a
familiar break to see if she can win a second world title.

“Competing at home will be a dream come true to me,” Mulanovich said. “It is
so good to know the wave and to be surrounded by people who love you. I have
grown up surfing Mancora so for sure it gives me an extra confidence.”

Beachley organized her first elite tour event in Sydney, Australia last year
and then went on to win her 7th ASP World Title. She was full of praise for
Mulanovich.

“It's amazing that Sofia is able to not only capitalize on her fame and
popularity in Peru but also utilize that to the benefit of the women's tour,”
Beachley said. “To have an event of this stature added to the tour so late in
the year is a huge bonus for everyone as it seems that we are all struggling to
find our rhythm and gain momentum. It is very exciting and I am very proud of
Sofia for putting her name and energy behind then event to ensure its future
and success.”

ASP CEO Brodie Carr is equally excited about the late addition.

“I am estatic,” Carr said. “We have been working really hard with Peru for
some time and it is unbelievable that we are going to have an event there this
year. I would see Sof at the contests and say, ‘Hey Sof, we are going to make
this happen aren’t we!’ She was always so excited about it!”

Mulanovich was the first Peruvian to win a World Title and has become an idol
to young and old at home.

“The support and instant recognition that the ASP gets there because of Sofia
is really quite unfathomable,” Carr said. “Think Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan,
anyone who is an absolute sporting hero – that is Sof in Peru!”

Rookie and World Title contender Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) visited Mulanovich and
the break last month and is anxious to surf Mancora again.

“Mancora is a really fun wave and it is great to know that we are traveling to
a world class wave that will allow the girls to showcase their talent,”
Gilmore said. “It is great for our tour. Having Sofia in the event is really
going to draw amazing crowds and attention, all of which will benefit the Top
17 and women’s surfing in South America.”

The next stop on the ASP Women’s World Tour is the NAB Beachley Classic in
October followed by the Mancora Peru Classic in November

C.J. HOBGOOD CLAIMS 2007 ASP NORTH AMERICA MEN’S TITLE

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California
(Monday, Oct. 1, 2007) – Former Association of
Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Champion C.J. Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL)
has claimed the 2007 ASP North America Men’s Title, following a stellar start
to the season which saw him win three major regional events.

His incredible run on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) has boosted Hobgood
to current No. 6 on the qualifying series, which puts him in excellent position
to back up his qualification for next season’s elite ASP World Tour.

“Well, obviously things went pretty well as most of the ’QS events I entered,
I ended up getting a result and to get a result on the WQS this year, you had
to be in the final,” Hobgood said.

Kicking things off with the first qualifying event of the season, Hobgood took
down the ASP WQS 4-Star O’Neill SI Pro presented by Ron Jon Surf shop in front
of a packed hometown crowd at Sebastian Inlet, Florida.

From there, Hobgood ventured to Southern California’s Lower Trestles for the
ASP WQS 4-Star Jeep Body Glove Surfbout, in which he dispatched of fellow
Foster’s ASP World Tour campaigners Dayyan Neve (Manly, AUS), Gabe Kling (St.
Augustine, FL) as well as WQS battler Shaun Ward (Huntington Beach, CA) to
claim his second major win of the season.

The phenomenal goofy-footer capped off his stellar North American run with a
huge victory at the ASP WQS 6-Star Honda U.S. Open presented by O’Neill in
Huntington Beach, besting another fellow elite tour campaigner in Jeremy Flores
(Hossegor, FRA).

“Everyone knows how hard Huntington is to win with the field and dealing with
the waves and it has always been a dream of mine to win the US Open,” Hobgood
said.

With his solid finishes in North America, Hobgood ventured abroad to compete in
other major ASP WQS events, in addition to competing as a member of the
Foster’s ASP World Tour, and provided himself a strong rating on the WQS to
backup his campaign on the elite tour.

“I definitely wouldn’t have done the WQS this year if it wasn’t for my
results in North America as I would have been too far behind the ball,”
Hobgood said. “As it was the other way around, I was put into a position where
I couldn’t turn down the WQS. All I had to do was show up to a few more
events and get some insurance.”

Currently sitting at 15th on the Foster’s ASP World Tour, and No. 6 on the ASP
WQS, Hobgood is in a good position to qualify for the elite tour in 2008, and
finds his focus shifting to events in Spain, Brazil and Hawaii.

“I’ve never given up hope on my goals,” Hobgood said. “Top 5 might be a
little hard to get, but I still think I have a good chance of finishing in the
Top 10 so we’ll see.”

While the Floridian’s plans for next season’s ASP North America Men’s Tour
are uncertain, the Champ hasn’t counted out a possible defense of his title in
2008.

“I’ll definitely be doing the Sebastian event and the Huntington event and
we’ll see about the rest as I love lowers as well.”

Although the ASP North America Men’s Champion has been decided, there is still
plenty on the line with the ASP WQS 2-Star No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta in San
Miguel this weekend, the ASP WQS 4-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented
by Jeep in Santa Cruz from Oct. 9-14 as well as the ASP WQS 1-Star Reef Classic
from Nov. 16-18 in Barbados.

BILLABONG PRO MUNDAKA STARTS TOMORROW; BURROW PREPARED TO FIGHT

MUNDAKA, Spain
(Monday, Oct. 1, 2007) – The 12-day waiting period for the
Billabong Pro Mundaka, Stop No. 8 of 10 on the Foster’s ASP World Tour, begins
tomorrow, October 2nd, 2007. With ratings leader Mick Fanning (AUS) capable of
clinching his maiden ASP World Title in Mundaka, World No. 3 Taj Burrow (AUS)
knows he has some work to do to keep his title aspirations alive.

“My plan is just to go all out and aim for a couple of wins over the next few
events,” Burrow said. “That’s what it takes to win a title so that’s
exactly what I’m going to go for.”

Burrow finished runner-up to World No. 2 Kelly Slater (USA) in the 2003
Billabong Pro Mundaka final and secured a 3rd place result in 2002. Burrow and
Slater need to finish within two rounds of Fanning to take the race to Brazil
or beyond.

“I really have nothing to lose so I’m just going to go for broke,” Burrow
said. “Rack up a couple more wins this year and then if it’s meant to be
it’s meant to be. I’m just looking forward to letting lose, surfing my best
and trying to chalk up another win.”

Defending Billabong Pro Mundaka Champion Bobby Martinez (USA) would no doubt
love another opportunity to win at the famed lefthand break, but he’ll have to
overcome South Africa’s Ricky Basnett and inaugural champion, Mark Occhilupo,
in Round 1 first. Occhilupo won the event in 1999, the same year he was crowned
World Champion.

“Mundaka has a real special meaning to me,” Occhilupo said. “I was the first
winner of this event and have done well here before. It’s just great to be
back, even though it may be my last year.”

Occhilupo, the longest-competing veteran on the Foster’s ASP World Tour, is
sitting low on the ratings will not requalify next year. His accomplishments
in the sport include a 1999 World Title and 12 elite tour wins – his last
being the Billabong Pro Mundaka in 1999.

“I’m trying to apply for a wildcard for next year because I like the place so
much,” Occhilupo said. “I’m lucky because it’s my own sponsor, Billabong,
who organize the event. If I become a wildcard, I’ll probably end up working
at the contest and around the contest which would be great. I’d love to come
back here to spend time with my good friends that I’ve met over the years.”

Three-time World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) won the event in 2002, and despite
only having an outside chance of winning his fourth World Title now that
Fanning has amassed a sizeable ratings lead, is excited to be in Mundaka again.

“It’s so beautiful, the weather is so nice and I love the food here,” Irons
said. “It’s just such a good time. I really look forward to it. Even though
I’m a regular foot, I like this left.”

Event wildcards for the 2007 Billabong Pro Mundaka include World Qualifying
Series (WQS) No. 3 Tiago Pires (PRT), local surfer Hodei Collazo (ESP) and
Tahitian sufer Manoa Drollet (PYF). Aritz Aranburu (ESP), who was a wildcard in
the Foster’s ASP World Tour event in France last week, has been given an
injury replacement berth due to the withdrawal of Travis Logie (ZAF). Trent
Munro (AUS) will surf in place of Damien Hobgood (USA) who is also injured.

Event officials are indicating that Round 1 of the event may run in nearby
Bakio tomorrow so Rounds 2 and 3 can be run in good conditions forecasted to
arrive in Mundaka on Oct. 3rd and 4th. An official call will be made at 8am in
Bakio tomorrow.
