How did you get started?

I started triathlon in 8th grade after hearing about a local race. I won my age group and beat a lot of older people and decided to give it a try. I got more serious during college trying out for the Junior National Team at Vineman International but never learned to ride and a good swim/run does not get you a win in triathlon. Since then I have taken up cycling and have been hooked ever since.

List your competitive highlights:

3-Time All-American in collegiate swimming; Racing bicycles in Belgium against some of the best in the world; winning my hometown Triathlon; finishing my first Marathon. Plaguing achievements never/not yet reached: Making it to CAT 1/2 Pro in cycling, racing a season of XTERRA, completing an Ironman, Racing in the Ironman World Championships after being groomed and predicted in college as one of the up and comers in Triathlon. Biggest Regret: Racing in Belgium with crappy wheels due to fear of breaking my nice race wheels. Biggest let down was racing with tire liners in my tires to not get flats. The difference between getting dropped and not getting dropped was a few watts. I feel I wasted my opportunity and there will always be a "what could have been" taste in my mouth.

What are you planning for next season?

In the last two years since starting the full-time job thing, my racing has changed a lot. I am now racing an array of races from running (5k to Marathon), cycling, mountain biking (including ultra events), cyclocross, triathlon and swimming. In 07, I raced about 10 races, in 08, I took it up to 25. In 09, I plan on getting back to where I used to hover at around 40/year.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

Making it through college, earning a BA while swimming on the swim team, holding down a 20 hour work week and managing time for a social life.

Q&A - Personal

What inspires you to compete?

To be able to test my genetic limits. To see where I stand in the athletic world. To see the hurt on others faces as I push on. To win.

Why do you like this sport?

Cycling requires you have everything: Physical strength and endurance, discipline and smarts. On any given day, there a quite a few people who can win, it is just a matter of who wants it most and who can put all the necessities of victory together on that day.

Describe your style...

I love to attack. I don't like sitting in the bunch, it is boreing to me to sit in a pack for 4 hours and then sprint for 200 meters. I want to win big in a solo breakaway.

Music?

I always use music. A lot of tempo type beat songs: some techno (only listen to this when I train) and a lot of inspirational music like Rocky Soundtrack songs.

Why do you compete?

To show myself why I made it hurt so bad when I was training.
