What I'm All About

Hi! I'm Barry Claman, and I aspire to become a professional triathlete.  I'm currently a first-year engineering student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.  This season is going to be an exciting one!
History:
I've inadvertently been training for triathlons since I was 5 or 6.  It started when my father began bringing me on his daily jogs and gave me my first real bike for Hanukkah.  Running and biking became the staples of my family's bonding time.  Eventually I was old enough to begin competing in track meets and mountain biking seriously.  I ran track in elementary school, junior high, and high school, and switched to long-distance running during my sophomore year in high school.  I had a progressively successful running career in high school, and I ended up at the top of varsity my senior year.  However, during the period before the state championships of my senior year, I suffered a stress fracture that progressed to a displaced fracture, which sidelined me for 3 months, and continued being troublesome for almost a year after the break due to complications.  During this time, I resorted to swimming daily to satisfy my endorphin dependency, and after some coercion from Seth Wilkie, my track core trainer (and dedicated triathlete), I got ahold of a cervelo soloist and my triathlon career began.  My first season, summer and fall of 2007, was surprisingly successful, considering my fibula was in two pieces for the majority of the season.  My season ended on a high note in September at the Subaru International Pacific Spirit Triathlon, in which I placed third while fighting a bout of the common cold.  During the off-season, I've been seriously focusing on my swimming technique and pedaling technique, and am currently in an elevated-intensity training phase in hopes of blowing minds at the Trisports.com Desert Classic Duathlon in Phoenix in February.

Long Term (Career)
-Qualify for 2012/2016/2020 Olympics

My Beliefs
-Success comes ONLY with hard work and intelligence in training and competition.
-Drugs destroy anything you've ever believed in or worked for.  You're not an athlete if you use em!
-Equipment should be valued on two factors:
-Comfort: Pain should come from competition, not your equipment.
-Compensation: If I can beat someone with better equipment than mine, that's a double-win for me!
-Beating your own inhibitions and fears is better than beating any opponent.

2008 Planned Races

Focus Race Semi-Focus Race Half-Iron Normal Race Potential Race

2/24- Desert Classic Duathlon (registered)

Phoenix, AZ.  Short Course.  Qualifier for nationals.  I plan on qualifying in my age group.
3/9- UBC Triathlon (registered)
Vancouver, BC.  Olympic.  This will be one of my focus races due to it's isolation and spacing from other events.
5/11- Jay Benson Triathlon
Albuquerque, NM.  Reverse sprint.  May be a focus race depending upon how I feel closer to the race.
6/1- Deuces Wild Triathlon
Show Low, AZ.  Olympic.  Qualifier for nationals.
6/7- Milkman Triathlon (NM Championships)
Dexter, NM.  Sprint.  Qualifier for nationals and Best of the US championships.
6/21- Gallup Triathlon
Gallup, NM.  Just for fun.  Maintaining my bike course record.
6/22- 5th Annual JCC Offroad Triathlon
Albuquerque, NM.  Reverse Sprint.  Most likely a focus race, seeing as I need "revenge" on this race.
8/9- ITU Junior Elite Nationals

Colorado Springs, CO.  Sprint.  Junior Elite nationals.  I NEED revenge on this race from last year.  Major focus race.  Goal: top 3
8/16- Los Alamos Triathlon
Los Alamos, NM.  Messed-up sprint (b, s, r).  Seeking revenge on this race.  Goal: first.  Semi-focus race (off peak from nationals, but I may be able to pull a double-peak).
9/1- Vancouver Triathlon
Vancouver, BC.  I'm seeking revenge on this race.  Olympic (maybe sprint).  I plan on winning this.  Low altitude should help!
9/20- USAT Nationals
Portland, OR.  Sprint.  I'll attend if I have the means of getting there.

And perhaps worlds in Duathlon.
