Grand Junction, Colorado - On August 15th and 16th, 2008 Duncan Racing International riders Alex Helton and Jim Vidmar competed in the Land’s End Hill Climb near Grand Junction, Colorado. The Land’s End Hill climb was the fourth event in the Colorado Hill Climb Association’s (CHCA) 2008 racing season. The Colorado Hill Climb Association sanctions auto hill climbs for cars, trucks and ATVs. Jim and Alex came into the event with high expectations after a very successful 2008 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb where Jim finished third, with a time of 12:35.670, and Alex finished fifth, with a time of 12:42.570. Prior to the Land’s End Hill Climb, Jim was second overall in the Pro-Quad points and led Alex by only one point.
On Saturday, after four runs, Alex was the fast qualifier with a time of 05:20.40 and Jim was third fastest after qualifying with a time of 05:25.68. Both racers were squarely focused on the road and having four clean runs. Both Paul Turner piped equipped Banshees ran flawlessly and the only change made on Saturday was a change of tires on both bikes.
On Sunday, as the fastest qualifier, Alex had his choice of running first or last and he chose to run first. The Land’s End race course begins at approximately 6500 feet above sea level and ends at just over 8000 feet above sea level. The course has several hair pin turns and a long straightaway where both Alex and Jim were clocked at 80 miles per hour on the radar gun. On his first run, Alex had a time of 05:17.09 and was in first place. Jim’s time was 05:25.68 and he was in third place, only .5 seconds out of second. On the second run, Alex improved his time and ran a 05:15.59. Jim shaved over 5 seconds off of his first run time and clocked in at 05:20.24. Jim and Alex were hoping for a DRI sweep of the top two spots, but Mike Tollett, who is a former DRI support rider and still runs many DRI components on his Suzuki Quadzilla, edged Jim out for second place.
After the event, Alex said, “My DRI 500 Banshee ran great all weekend.” He attributed his win to the fact that he did not have to make any major changes to the setup of the bike.” I didn’t have to change a thing all weekend.” This event was Alex’s first CHCA win.
The final CHCA event of the season is scheduled for September 6th and 7th, 2008 in Victor, Colorado. We are hoping for a first and second place finish.
