Attack, keep rolling at 30mph, lap the field, keep the field in check. That's how it went down for the Hincapie/Coca-Cola/Barkley Team at the Piedmont Criterium. The Pro 1-2 twilight crit started late under the lights at 9:30. Our team was very active and worked great to cover everything as Chris jumped away with current Masters TT Nat. Champ Pete Cannel (Mob), and Bobby Sweeting (Toshiba Pro). After dropping Sweeting from the break. Chris and Pete kept the pace high on the classic 4 corner course. Jeremy, Darren, Reid, Mike, Adam and Knetch followed wheels and covered the field with included several strong riders from DLP Pro, Inferno, Jittery Joes, Toshiba, Time Pro Cycling and several other strong local elite racers. Chris and Pete lapped the field, deciding to dangle 3-5 seconds off the pack to keep from getting mixed up with everyone in the sprint. Darren (Mr. $ Banks) sprinted to win a sweet $100 prime with 5 laps to go, promting 4 other riders to jump just off the front. Jeremy rode like a madman to jump across to the chase group, attacking with 4 laps to go. Adam attacked with 2 laps to go, and Jeremy countered again with one lap to go. Knetch rode at the front and took 2nd in the fieldsprint for 8th place.
Women's Crit: Shalini and Lori's field was combined with the Jr's field. Coming down to a field sprint, Shalini and Lori took 7th and 8th, with local racer Holly Steelman (Juice Plus) winning the sprint.
Road Race: Hot, hilly and humid. From the gun, Jeremy Conn got up the road with Jon Hamblen(Time Pro), and Bobby Sweeting(Tosiba Pro). With the gap growing to 4.5 minutes Chris, Roger, Blair, Adam, Reid and Rigby rode tempo in the field. Jeremy finished 3rd, great result after being away for close to 50 miles in the heat. Great job Conn.
Women's RR: The newly wed Lauren Rigby proved that she is still was a fast sprint, taking a close 2nd in the field sprint after several weeks off the bike. With one lone racers off the front, Lauren finished 3rd overall with Shalini 6th. All in all a great weekend for the team and a successful first event for the promotors of the Piedmont Omnium.

Catharine Pendrel Only 9 Seconds From Bronze, Georgia Gould Finishes a Solid 8th
August 23, 2008 Vail, CO
Congratulations to Catharine and Georgia for an outstanding race at the Olympics!
Catharine had the ride of her life and finished 4th, only 9 seconds out of the bronze medal. Georgia got the hole shot off the start line and then rode steadily in the top ten to finish eighth, just 23 seconds behind her fellow US teammate Mary McConnelog. It was an incredibly difficult course with many of the athletes saying it was the hardest circuit they've seen all year.
Catharine rode in the top five the entire race. She was third with two laps to go. An unfortunate missed shift on the last climb of the last lap allowed Irina Kalentieva, the 2007 World Champion, to squeak past her and claim the bronze by a mere nine seconds.
"Irina and I were together for most of the last lap," said Catharine. "There was one little 'popper' climb before the final descent, and I made an error there. I tried to downshift to my granny [gear] on the steepest part, and had to put my foot down, and that's when she got by me. It hurts, but it was still a fantastic ride for me, and I feel that I didn't lose third, I won fourth."
After a strong start, Georgia rode steadily up through the field. With one lap to go Georgia was in 12th behind China's Ying Liu, winner of the 2007 test event. A last lap surge saw Georgia come across the line in 8th.
"It wasn't what I was hoping and dreaming for," said Georgia, "but it's a solid result. I had a strategy to be conservative at the beginning, because I knew people would be blowing up at the end. If you're tired, you can't make it up those climbs." Still, a top ten finish at the Olympic Games is outstanding!
Congrats to both Catharine and Georgia. Enjoy the Closing Ceremonies and safe travels back home.

Catharine Pendrel Gives LUNA First Ever World Cup Victory
Katerina Nash Races to First World Cup Podium
Team Leading Overall Standings
Catharine, in only her first year with the LUNA Team, has scored the biggest win of her young career. And she did it in her home country with her parents, brother, and husband cheering her on. Winning a World Cup is second only to the World Championships and the Olympics, which bodes well for her as she leaves for Beijing on Aug 17th.
The weather was the talk of the weekend. With the rain coming down for a good five hours before the start of the women's race, the course was a treacherous muddy mess. Perfect conditions for those riders that enjoy riding/running over man eating roots covered in muck, slogging through deep mud bogs, and negotiating the rivers of rain that make the trail a spider web of chaos. Oh joy.
Catharine got an ok start; getting caught behind some traffic on the first steep climb, but by the top had caught and passed the leader, Marie Helene Premont, winner of last weekend's World Cup in Mont Sainte Anne. Catharine stayed in front of Marie for the following lap, and then eventually pulled away to win solo by almost two minutes.
"It was raining so hard and I was having so much fun that part way through the race I said to myself, 'I can't believe I get paid to do this!'" said Catharine.
Katerina Nash had the best race of her career as well, with an outstanding 3rd place. "I had a lot of fun on the course today," said Katerina. "My legs were good and I was climbing well. I really enjoyed the technical sections and didn't make any major mistakes. It feels really good to finish in front of many of the women going to the Olympics." Katerina commented later that even though she didn't win the race, she did win the champagne contest on the podium by getting her bottle open first and of course dousing her teammates with the all of its contents.
Georgia Gould rode what she called a "conservative race" and was content with a solid 5th place performance. "I was pretty conservative on the technical sections," said Georgia. "I rode well on the climbs and held my own on the descents. I wanted to be safe and not get hurt. Overall I felt strong and was happy with my ride."
