Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009 saw the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Pulliam Youth Center, operated by the Boys and Girls Club of Larimer County. Berthoud BMX, Rocky Mountain Racing, and the ABA took this opportunity to team up with corporate sponsors GT bicycles, PowerBar, and Loveland Cycle & Fitness to announce plans for a new BMX facility at the center.

The BMX track will be located behind the Pulliam Youth Center and will be open to all Boys and Girls Club/American Bicycle Association members. The new Loveland BMX facility will also be the flagship for a proposed ABA national program to introduce BMX racing to the Boys and Girls Clubs across America. Rocky Mountain Racing handed out flyers for two ABA/PowerBar free instructional clinics to be held at the youth center and the Berthoud BMX track on Feb. 19 and 20. PowerBar and the Berthoud BMX Association will hold a free instructional forum for parents and riders at the Pulliam Youth Center on Feb. 19 followed by a riders’ clinic hosted by P.J. DiPentino and a number of local pros at the Berthoud BMX track on Feb. 20. Rocky Mountain Racing’s joint venture with Powerbar will provide a great opportunity for families to learn about the sport of BMX racing and the need for balanced nutrition and a good training program.

The Loveland BMX facility is slated to open in March 2009. In the meantime, riders can attend training and instruction clinics at the Berthoud or Fort Collins BMX tracks. The Pulliam Youth Center will be the first ABA sanctioned Boys and Girls Club BMX track to offer the Olympic sport of BMX to America’s youth. Riders will be taught by local professional BMX racers and will be given the chance to race once or twice a week in an organized race club

With a total of five new Boys and Girls Club tracks scheduled to open in Colorado during the 2009/2010 season, the Loveland track will be the first to hold organized racing (currently scheduled for early spring).

The joint venture of these various organizations hopes to promote a healthy alternative for today’s youth in a safe and controlled atmosphere. A little over six months ago we ran our first race at the BMX track. What seemed like a major accomplishment is now but a fond memory. In 2009 the Berthoud BMX association will be bringing some very exciting opportunities for the BMX lover. BBMX has been selected by the American Bicycle Association to sponsor a 2009 Redline Championship qualifier on Berthoud Day Saturday June 6.This event will bring racers from all over the central United States to our track in hopes of qualifying for the prestigious Redline Championship held in October. It also marks the track’s one year anniversary. With over 1000 people attending this event, it will be the biggest race ever attempted at our track and a major addition to the Berthoud Day celebration line up. We will hold the race in the evening with main event racing under the lights.

BBMX is also proud to announce our involvement with the Boys and Girls Club of America in 2009 by building and operating a state-of-the-art BMX program for the Larimer County Boys and Girls Club. In the spring of 2009, Berthoud BMX and our local riders will be building a BMX track at the brand new Pulliam Youth facility located on 2366 E. First St., in Loveland. In conjunction with the American Bicycle Association, Berthoud BMX is organizing and developing a national program introducing BMX Across America to the Boys and Girls Club as part of BBMX pay back program. This will also open the doors of opportunity to bring a Boys and Girls Club facility to Berthoud in the future, something I am very excited about and this town has needed for a a long time.

Also in 2009 Berthoud BMX and local bike shop Roadhouse 56 will be bringing a new look to the Berthoud bicycle scene with the introduction of Route 56 Cyclocross track at the Berthoud BMX facility. Cyclocross is a distance race that incorporates biking and running. The racers battle the elements of a bike race with steeple chase diversions along the way. It is a very popular Euro sport with strong local champions and a very talented USA cycling team. We will hold races twice a week with sanctioned events during the year. This type of racing is a great way to work out and can be done with little financial strain on the pocketbook.

Finally, BBMX will be getting some needed cosmetic updates. We will be installing concrete on top of the starting hill this spring. This will help with the erosion of the track and provide the best possible start. We also will be seeding the perimeter with a grass to help with the fall thorn problem. Asphalt berms and lights are on the agenda for 2010. In all, our track is shaping up and with the big events coming our way the national races are not far behind. See ya’ at the track!

Thank You from a BMX Family
It seems to me that this is the best time to look back at the year that has gone by and to take the time to acknowledge all who have played a very important role to the success of the year. At this time we would like to extend our sincere and warmest thanks to all who have made the Berthoud BMX track a reality for all the young and maybe not-so-young riders who have come out to the track to compete or who have just come to see what all the fuss was about.
A special thanks to the DiPentino family for all your hard work and energy; RMR for your inspiration; the Good Lord for watching over our son; the Berthoud Police Department; the Fire Department; the Town of Berthoud for allowing the track; the Spears family for all the work you have done; Bernice Weber (we love you); the entire Berthoud Recorder staff, especially Mr. Gary Wamsley, the ABA BMX – without you there would be nothing; Roadhouse Bikes for the parts you keep in stock, and the tools you allow the local riders to borrow and return; Bike N Hike of Longmont for your help to a mom who didn’t know a darn thing about BMX bikes, bike parts, gear, etc.; and finally, to all, and I mean ALL the families who have allowed their children to experience a challenge that can be painful at times, but most rewarding for these athletes as they realize this is an individual sport that they can do.
Our best wishes to Patrick DiPentino, who without his time and patience at the clinics he provided early on, our son may have never come to realize that dreams can come true no matter how big or small. Good luck Patrick as you head off to serve our country in the Air Force. A warm and special thanks to P.J. DiPentino for your support that has been most deeply appreciated by us as well as our son. If I have forgotten anyone please forgive me, for there are many folks who have provided wonderful support and their precious time. We thank all of you! Looking forward to the 2009 ABA BMX racing season!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
May God bless all of you!
The Grenda Family

For the past eight years I have had turkey in Tulsa. Every Thanksgiving weekend the best BMX riders from all over the world travel to Tulsa, Okla. for the ABA BMX Grand Nationals. My 20-year-old son Patrick, a Pro-cruiser racer started this tradition when he was a mere 10 yrs old. I followed the next year and we haven’t missed one since. Patrick “Pyro” Dipentino even won the event at the age of 12, joining a very elite group of Coloradoans to complete this task. For the first time, Pyro will miss out on the Thanksgiving ritual as he prepares for his upcoming departure to the Air Force -- but Berthoud will be well represented by a group of very talented racers.
Let me introduce the 2008 Grand National attendees. Starting us off is the only Berthoud girl attending, Gabriella Dipentino is 14-years-old and splits her time between cheerleading and racing BMX. She has attended this race four times and is the most experienced Berthoud rider making the journey. She will be racing two different bikes, 20” & 24”, and has been training very hard to get to the main event. Gabriella is feared among the local boys often bringing them back to reality with her aggressive racing wins. Gabriella has a motto “make the boys cry” yet can often be seen helping at the training sessions at the local tracks.
Next are the newest riders, Brad Grenda and Kyle Grey. Both of these riders are brand new and will be attending their first national race event. These are two of about twenty local riders who have become addicted to racing. Grenda is a 12-year-old intermediate rider and placed in the top ten in the state. He has good track speed and a lot of skill for a kid who has only been racing since June. Brad has a good chance at the main event if he can keep his nerves under control. His partner is Kyle Grey also a 12-year-old intermediate. Grey will possibly have to race Grenda in the preliminary rounds. Kyle is quick from the start and can be very hard to catch if he can get in front. Both have a great chance at getting to the main event.
Finally, we have the little guys, Phillip “The flyin’ Meatball” Dipentino  and  Wyatte “the Sheriffe” Bell. Phillip is my 7-year-old and has been racing since he was 5. Meatball has become somewhat of a legend amongst the local BMX teenagers. He is a Mohawk wearing BMX racing machine. Phillip will have the biggest group of riders trying to qualify. His age group is one of the fastest growing among the racers and he will have his work cut out for him. He has worked very hard all summer and will be attending for the first time with high hopes. At 6-years-old his buddy Wyatte Bell from rural Berthoud will be our youngest racer attending. This is our best shot at a Berthoud win. Wyatte has been on the national circuit since he was 4 years old. He also won this event last year. Bell also won the 2008 World Championships in Bejing China this summer. He is a very fast rider and has the experience and skill to repeat his title.

Colorado will be well represented with over 100 riders attending from across the state. In the mix will be Berthouds “fab five.” The Berthoud BMX track will remain open weather permitting all winter. For information on the track call (970) 308-5528 or visit us online at www.berthoudbmx.com.

Grand Nationals Offers Grand Time for Riders
Thursday, Dec 11th, 2008
By P.J. DiPentino

It’s good to be home. Twelve hours one way in a van full of teenagers can be testy no matter how much patience a dad has. Add in the 7-year-old and it could become completely out of hand. Luckily, this group of riders proved to be a good bunch and we made it to the expo center in record time. The kids quickly located the RMR pit area and we settled in for a long weekend of racing. The only practice session is on Thanksgiving Day. After our practice we had a makeshift turkey spread in the hotel room followed by swimming in the pool.

Friday was the first competition. The race of champions is a invitation only race for the riders who raced on the state level. Phillip and Gabriella Dipentino, Brad Grenda, and Wyatt Bell raced this event. Wyatt Bell dominated his class and walked away with another first place win. The others worked really hard but could not advance through the stiff competition. After the races again back to the hotel to join the BMXers who had taken over the pool and hot tubs.

Saturday and Sunday were the qualifiers. Gabriella raced exceptionally well but could not get past a very talented group of girls. If you think BMX is a boys’ sport watch a 14-year-old girls’ event and you will be surprised. Gabriella mixed elbows all weekend but did not qualify. The same can be said for Phillip DiPentino and Kyle Gray. Nerves and excitement got the better of them and they could not get out of the qualifiyng rounds. Brad Grenda did well and advanced to the quarterfinals. He was able to win one of his qualifying races. Wyatt Bell, the 6-year-old, looked great and made it all the way to the main event. With a very strong ride, he came away with a third place overall. On the way home I asked the riders the following questions to pass time here are some of their responses.
