Q&A - Personal

Do you train? What does your schedule look like?

I race train after school from 2:00 - 4:30 five days during the week and for most of Saturday and Sunday. After that, I'll go into the park with my friends, dad or uncle (sometimes all of them) and work on new moves. I crosstrain in the spring, summer and fall by wakeboarding and mountain biking as well as soccer and golf. I attend one or two summer ski camps every year, too. Two summer's ago, I spent ten days in the rain on Whistler's glacier. This past summer, I'm went to Mt Hood for two weeks. I spent 5 days race training and then five days freestyle training. This summer, I'm focusing only on racing. I was invited to the Far West Speed Camp in Mammoth in the end of May and I am going to the Tichy racing camp at Mt. Hood for 11 days in July.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I've broken my wrist twice and I'm not squeemish about blood so maybe something like a doctor. I also like how weather affects my life so being a TV weather person or a meteorologist would be fun too.

Why do you like this sport?

Racing right now is my favorite. I like the speed and the turns. I like learning new ways to get faster and turn quicker. My coaches are really nice and they've helped me to improve so much. Slopestyle for me is a way to learn new things that are cool. I like spending time with my uncle. He coaches me and gets me to try new tricks like spinning boxes and throwing threes. I finally ran skier X races this year and really like it. It combines racing and jumping and I love to do both of those.

What inspires you to compete?

I like going to competitions. I like meeting new people and seeing how good I am compared to them. When you race against someone really good and you improve your time or beat them, that's pretty cool.

Do you like to travel? What's your best (clean) road trip story?

I spent 10 days in Whistler two summers ago. It was so different because I was in a different country. I've never skied on a glacier before. At home, I take one chairlift to the top. At Whistler, we took a chairlift, then got on a bus and then two more chairlifts and a T-bar. We drove there too and saw a lot of neat things like volcanos and huge rivers. Last year, I had a Far West Championships Super G race in Tahoe on Saturday and my USASA National Championships Halfpipe on Sunday morning at Copper Mountain, CO. We drove to Sacramento, took a flight to Denver, drove through a snowstorm to Copper Mountain and got to the condo with my dad at 3:30 a.m. I had to be on the hill by 7:30 for my Halfpipe National Championship competition. Now I know how Shaun White feels in those TV commercials.

Hey Rachel: Are you doing Skier X this year again? Are you in 11-15 girls this year, or 10 and under?
I will race again this year, even though my dad doesn't approve. But mom is the one who takes me. If I make it to Nationals at Copper it would be great to meet you. I watched you race my friend Summer Church, last year, but never got to talk to you.

We don't have any snow yet. Bummer.
