Q&A - Self Interview
What is your biggest strength on a bike?
It's weird to say this (and hopefully not boastful) but people often comment on how "good" I look on a bike -- they say I have good style. I try to ride with my elbows up in the attack position and I do try to keep my gear and bike clean and attractive... maybe they're right! And good form leads to speed and good racing.
Why should someone sponsor you?
I am not the best racer nor will I ever be – I started racing a bit too old and I have a bit too much going to ever turn pro. I attend the University of Utah and am studying psychology and also working 30 hours a week to boot. I understand that motocross racing is a business and my job as a sponsored rider is to represent the company and their product and increase their business. Racing is my hobby and my passion and if I could receive some support I would appreciate it immensely and do this additional “job” accordingly. Racing is full of great people and is fun and rewarding but also expensive. I cherish my ability to ride and race and do my best to help out the companies that help me do what I love.
Why do you always keep your bike so clean? Do you have OCD?!
No, while I may be obsessive about keeping my bike clean and in tiptop shape I have no compulsion disorder. Working on my bike is therapy for me. I’ve got my shop all set up with a heater and a good radio and all the tools I need to work on my bike after work and school. It’s soothing to be able to tear my bike apart, clean it and put it back together. I like polishing my bike’s frame or sharpening my footpegs!
When do you ride your best?
That is a hard question and something I've been thinking about recently. I know my bike is better than everyone else’s on the line, I know I am physically fit and I know that my Yamaha, training experience and general reflexes are pretty good about keeping me off the dirt so I don’t worry about crashing… I think I ride my best when I am having fun. Come to think of it; I know that is when I ride my best. It is fun to race, to be competitive, to get a shot of adrenaline and feel some endorphins run through my body and even more fun to do well -- that is why I try to make my best the very best and why I pound the pavement with sneakers and road bike tires during the week.
Q&A - Competition
How did you get started?
My parents bought an XR 100 for the family. And then my uncle taught me how to ride out in the desert. I had ridden mountain bikes and thought those were really fun -- but a bike with a motor trumps anything you pedal.
List your competitive highlights
-Holeshoting races is always fun (my bike is fast and I'm quick off the gate)
-Two fifths this season.
-Making the podium.
-Making the night show when the AMA Arenacross came to Salt Lake -- finished 8th overall.
What are you planning for next season?
Racing most if not all of the RMR races and the USRA and Wild West National races. This winter Utah is going to have an indoor arenacross series -- www.utahwintercross.com -- and I'd like to race in that too. I've raced two AMA arenacross races and had fun doing those.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
Coming back from injury and coming back better than before. In May '06 I broke both my legs. I've had three surgeries on my right leg, one to make it as long as the left again, one to put it back together and one to remove some of the hardware. Two months in a wheelchair, three months on crutches. In the end it has been a good experience -- but not one I'd like to repeat!
