Mike Spencer is a third generation race car driver who has come up through the ranks to become a nationally recognized threat in open wheel racing. He grew up an athlete playing soccer, wakeboarding and riding motorcycles, and progressed into racing Mini-Sprints. During his time working to maintain his race car and driving on the weekends, car owner Hal Engstrom realized his ability, and let Mike run in his own 360ci sprint car during practice nights.
In 2001 Spencer ran his first complete season in 410 sprint cars with SCRA and traveled on the Non-Winged World Championship circuit throughout the Midwest earning Rookie of the Year honors in Engstrom’s KMA Racing #44 entry. In the years to come, Mike would be invited to race on USAC National Sprint Cars for BWB Racing, drive midgets for past champion Rick Hendrix with the USAC Western States Midgets, at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals and test his skills on the pavement in the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at Irwindale Speedway. Spencer ran all of these races, and others, while maintaining the car every week and obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona.
Mike’s time in the driver’s seat, hours in the garage and engineering background have allowed him to gain a competitive edge on other racers. In 2007 Mike won three races against the best West Coast and National racers and has been asked to drive for Ron Chaffin, a car owner who has won championships in SCRA, NWWC and USAC/CRA competition and provides top notch equipment. With this car and renowned Crew Chief Bruce Bromme Jr. perfecting the setup, this team is geared up to win many races and contend for the USAC/CRA title in the #50 car.
Though Spencer will be driving for a well funded team, he is always looking for sponsorship opportunities to promote equipment, clothing and other products.
