The 14th Annual Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational Breaks Goal and Raises More Than $600,000

San Diego, Calif. – Aug. 22, 2007  –   Organizers for the 14th annual Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational estimate the event, held Sunday, August 19th at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, raised more than $600,000, which breaks past year’s records and the event’s goal.  Over the past 14 years, the event has raised more than $2.6 million to support cancer research at the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center.

"This year we wanted to raise a half million dollars, which symbolizes one dollar for each life to be lost to cancer this year, and we were able to more than beat that goal! " said Paul Grayson, co-chair of the event. " Our success really represents the aloha spirit of the community.  We cannot beat this disease individually, but together we have a chance to find better ways to treat and prevent cancer.   Read more...

Thank you to all those who participated in Survivor Beach!

We had 141 surfboards to create a line that was just over three football fields long -- 1133 feet -- or just under four statues of liberty!

Each year, professional surfers, surfers from the business world, and surfers who have survived cancer come together to celebrate surfing and raise money for cancer research.

The event has gained an international reputation among surfing enthusiasts in the business and surfing worlds by simultaneously celebrating the "aloha" spirit of surfing and the gracefulness of supporting cancer research and survival.

The Professors - Morning Musical Guest

If you have a beloved Pendleton shirt in your closet and value your Ventures LPs above all others, you'll love The Professors -- an adrenaline-driven surf guitar band started by UCSD's very own Todd Everett. Launched in 2004, the band features a trippy mix of bass, drums and electric guitar accentuated by an unexpected mix of horns and bongos.

The Professors will play at this year's Longboard Luau from 7:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
