Q&A - Personal
Why do you like this sport?
From when we were born our Dad got us involved with motorcycles, at 5 Aaron got a Yamaha PW 50 for Christmas. Since then we have been hooked. Rich started racing flattrack in the 70's and got us involved from day one. We have grown up around motorcycles and have ridden them all our lives. Whether its trail riding, or going full out leaving pea-gravel rooster tails on Ohio half-miles we do this together. This is a family sport for us.
Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
We all ride as much as possible. During the summer we race all over the country on the weekends and practice at a few different local tracks during the week. In the fall and spring we also race on the weekends, usually more locally so that we can make it to work during the week. When we are not racing we will do some harescrambles, and motocross to stay in shape. We also all do a rigourous weight lifting and cardio regimen all year during the week. But there is no better training then being on the motorcycle and we throw a leg over one whenever possible
What inspires you to compete?
All three of us have always been very competitive. Early in our careers we all raced BMX, it was just too expensive for dad to fund a motorcycle race program for all 3 of us when we were young so we traveled the country for ten years racing bikes. Aaron and Nate not only raced BMX, but also excelled in basketball, baseball, and golf during high school. All three of us also were college student-athletes. Rich played basketball at Heidelberg College, Aaron and Nate both played baseball for Tiffin University. No matter the sport, competition is in the family genes.
Describe your style...
The Long's styles are all different but similar. Aaron likes to set the pace, he usually gets good starts and trys to put distance between him and his competitors early, he pushes it hard while being in control. Nate is a hard charger, the more laps in the race the better he gets. Being in great physical condition he wears out his competition. Rich loves to ride up by the hay bales and let it hang out, if the conditions are right and there is a nice cushion he is tough to beat. On short tracks with the smaller bikes he is one of the best. You wont find many 50 year olds in as good as condition as he is.
Some Personal Information About Me:
About the Longs: Rich set the example early and both Nate and Aaron have followed. All three are school teachers. Rich is in his 31st year teaching at Massillon Middle School, he has been married to Nancy since 1984 and has two sons who also comprise of the racing team. Aaron is in his 3rd year teaching at Cory-Rawson High School, he also a junior high football coach, assistant varsity basketball and baseball coach. Aaron resides in Findlay, OH. Nate lives with his wife of 2 years Crystal in Rosewood,OH with their daughter Madilyn. Nate is currently in his first year teaching at Piqua City Schools.
In our spare time we like to ride as much as possible, whether its racing, trail riding, ice riding, or anything else on two wheels. We also like to play baseball, softball, golf, and basketball.
