Q&A - Competition

How did you get started?

A few years ago I was very over weight and looking to change my lifestyle for the betterment of my family and myself. I started to run when I hit 220 pounds and could barely make it through the 3.5km route I picked that night. I kept with it and ended up finding my love for running and completed my first marathon that fall. After looking for more events the following fall, I found duathlon on the web and went out and bought a bike and raced that same weekend. I was hooked and now my passion has me in great shape and my family life is the best it has ever been!

List your competitive highlights:

In 2007, my first year on the Subaru Duathlon series, I had a couple top ten finishes and went from a beginner on the bike to a decent cyclist for the sport. In the fall, after the duathlons wrapped up, I ran a marathon to see if the conditioning for the duathlons could qualify me for Boston and I was able to qualify on a very windy, cold day. In 2008, I had several top 3 races on the series including a second place finish in an International distance event. I completed my first Half Iron Distance as well, in 3rd place, with a respectable bike portion. To finish the year, I placed 2nd in my Age Group at the Provincial Championships, 8th overall. This was a huge improvement on the 2007 race.

What are you planning for next season?

For 2009, I am going to prepare even more to run a lot smoother of the bike and finish at the top of the podium in at least one event. I am going to race the Muskoka Long Course Du, Peterborough 1/2 IM Du, Ottawa Iron Distance Du and a bunch of International Distance Duathlons. I will then regroup for the fall and work towards a top three showing in my Age Group at the Canadian Championships.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

To date, I would have to say having a very consistent year and placing 2nd in my Age Group for the 9 event Subaru Duathlon Series.

Q&A - Personal

What inspires you to compete?

I look at this lifestyle as my second chance. I threw away my 20's, after being athletic in high school, and some how was able to find the desire to improve as a person and family man. Since I started competing my life has become so much better in every way imaginable so I believe that this will continue for as long as I stay in shape, which is made easier when you have competition goals to drive you.

Do you train? What does your schedule look like?

I love to train and wish I had even more time to train. Family must come first for me so I make sure to take care of them before setting out for any training. I get at least an hour and a half of solid running or cycling in 6 days a week and also hit the gym for my lunch break at work 4 days a week. I try to save my longer runs and rides for the weekend while the rest of the family sleeps in.

Describe your style...

I would describe myself as more of a grinder than a smooth, efficient athlete. I have been working with my coach to become more fluent in my cycling and running but when most of your original training was for weight loss, you tend to pick up some bad habits. Now that I am competing, and doing well, I try to focus more on technique to increase performance.

It's great to find other duathletes! Nice results and keep up the training this winter. If you ever make it down to Florida for a race let me know. 5*s
