Just wanted to pass on this artical that Throttler magazine did on Justin:: Justin Brayton’s racing career is a true Cinderella story. Growing up in Fort Dodge, he raced motocross on a local level. His family did their best to give him opportunities. His amateur career was not as bright as other’s: he never won any major amateur titles — a few moto wins and fourth place overall finishes at Lorreta Lynn’s National Championship were the highlights of his amateur career. His professional career however, is much better. He is now the most successful motocross racer to ever come out of Iowa.In 2002, Justin made his pro debut at Vets Auditorium in Des Moines at Round 1 of the AMA National Arenacross. He was very fast, easily winning his heat races. He even beat his all-time hero Damon Bradshaw — which surprised just about everyone, including himself.

He continued to race the Arenacross series, eventually being picked up by a team. He then landed with Motoworld Racing Suzuki. Managed by Paul Lindsay, this satellite team for the Suzuki brand is well-respected — it was a good move for both the team and Justin.

He raced Arenacross for three years before trying his hand at Supercross — the most elite form of motocross racing in the world. It was clear Justin was on his way to a great future.

This spring he was invited to race in the Navy Moto X World Championships in San Diego, which was live on ESPN. He finished third, receiving the Bronze Helmet award. In the X Games at the end of July, he finished fifth in the Moto X event against the world’s best Supercross racers — including Jeremy McGrath. At just 24 years old, he has accomplished more than most in racing.

Justin now races for the Factory KTM team called MDK. To race out of one of the “big rigs” is every motocross racer’s dream.

“I started doing well and showed I had good speed,” he says. “They approached me at the Dallas Supercross and invited me to test one of their bikes at their facility in Southern California. Right away I loved the bike and the structure of the team, so we ironed out a contract.”

While he has produced some great results for the team, he isn’t satisfied. His will to win and his work ethic are what make him one of the special people that can make a living racing.

“Growing up in Iowa was slow paced compared to my life now,” he says. “I moved to Southern California at 19 years old, and basically started over. I knew I had to be here to make my dream come true. I stayed with some friends of my parents at first, and then rented a place. A year ago I purchased my first house in Murrieta. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices moving away from my family. I took some risk coming out here with very little money. The constant travel away from friends and family is tough.”

But his success seems to make it all worthwhile. Justin trains very hard and has a personal trainer and a nutritionist to help him reach his potential. He is taking his opportunities very seriously.

When asked about his goals he says, “I never would imagine I could be where I am today. My goals change all the time. Now, it’s to win some Supercrosses and eventually a championship. I think that’s an obtainable goal for me.”

Without a doubt, Justin is one of the most approachable and friendly racers in the pro pits. He enjoys his job and it’s obvious.

“I love it,” he says. “I get to do what I love — race dirt bikes. I can’t wait to get up and start each day.”
