BMX - You Wanna race? Heres how:

Getting started in BMX is easy -

The first things you need:

  • A bicycle - any BMX type and size will do, but it is recommended that you start with one that has no more than a 20" wheel diameter - as that is the allowable limit in the Novice class.
  • The location of an ABA track. Sacramento area - Here is MY personal favorite - www.elkhornbmx.com 916-991-2931, Operators, Brian and Tammy Ford. These are incredible, down to earth people! And another local favorite is Roseville (Nor-Cal) http://www.norcaltracks.com/ (916) 784-UBMX - Bruce and Linda Minton, again, very nice people, too. To locate tracks in your city/state, you may go to the OFFICIAL ABA site - www.ababmx.com

When calling your nearest ABA track, you`ll need to want to ask six questions:

  • How do I get to your track?
  • Do you have a Beginner Day or clinics available for new riders?
  • What time are your sign-up and practice times?
  • What time do you begin racing?
  • How much will it cost to begin racing?
  • How big are your first place trophies?

Once you have your bike, the location of the nearest ABA track, and when they run, there are two simple checklists to follow.

Your Bike:

  • Make sure all bolts are tight - especially your axle and stem bolts.
  • Remove any freestyle type axle pegs.
  • All reflectors/brackets must be removed for safety purposes.
  • If your bike has a kickstand, it must be taken off.
  • You will eventually need a numberplate. You will be provided a temporary numberplate with your membership purchase.

Clothing and safety equipment:

  • Long sleeve shirt.
  • Long pants or jeans.
  • A helmet. The ABA recommends a full-face helmet. Many ABA tracks have "loaner helmets" for beginners to use.
  • Any enclosed shoe is sufficient. Skateboard style shoes are suggested.

Now that you have everything ready, we`ll see you at the track!

Q&A - Personal

Why do you like this sport?

From the age of 2, I've always been attracted to bikes (anything with wheels), I rode my Hot Wheels Quad like I was a professional rider, I can bust tricks like you've never seen before. I ride my PW-5o like a pro. I'm not afraid of anything!! I dream of riding in my sleep..All day All night! I'm hoping I get a QUAD for my 5th Birthday

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A professional BMX rider! Oh yeah, A Fireman, A Cop, and a worker. It changes daily. I also want to be a dad one day and ride bikes with my kids....

How's Life Treating You?

Pretty well for a youngster. I have my parents, who take good care of me and ensure I have what I need (and then some). Two older sisters who teach me new stuff and I make sure to drive them crazy like little brothers do! I have my sick White VENDETTA, my Hoffman Freestyle Bike, and my new QUAD that I got for my birthday so I can go riding with my dad. I just spent Christmas at Disneyland. I have the pleasure to go out several times a week to my local tracks (Elkhorn and Nor-Cal Roseville) and see all my friends. I ride for ELITE Bikes - Best Bike Shop in town!! I'd say Life is treating me very well at this point in my life.

Some Personal Information About Me:

I have a lot of Nicknames: The Boy, Boy-Boy, Bubba, James E Boy, Big Headed, Jamesewaymsey, Jamison (according to Johnny), Little man-boy, crazy brother, brother....

What inspires you to compete?

I love to ride everyday! My first race, I won 3rd place outta seven kids. Back to the question....Just me on my bike, thats it. Thats all I ever think about.
