Biggest AccomplishmentWinning my 1st race back after over a year off due to a knee injury and 2 shoulder surgeries!
July 14, 2007 ET Motopark
2007 In Review I have had some extremely bad luck with injuries for the past year. After my first year riding I began to struggle with a shoulder injury, I was unaware of the seriousness of the problem and therefore put off taking care of it. In May of 2006 at WMA Round 1 at Glen Helen, I crashed and injured my knee. By then I had started taking my racing program seriously so I went to the Doctor right away. I had mentioned my shoulder problem and after some MRI's, the Doctor told me to pick which one I wanted fixed, the knee or shoulder. I told him to go for the shoulder, the Doctor wasn't exactly sure of the problem but he went in for surgery anyway. I had my first shoulder surgery July 26, 2006, this was unsuccessful and the Doctor told me to wait 3 months before he would try again. In the meantime I left my family and moved to California to pursue some opportunities while I was sidelined. My 2nd ride back after 3 months off, I was taken out by a fellow rider and dislocated my shoulder again. My shoulder had never felt worse, this was my all time low. I decided to move back to Arizona with my parents. I found a good reputable Doctor and went in for my second shoulder surgery at the end of January. I was told I would be out for 6 months but since I progressed so well my Doctor released me 2 months early. Now here I am a few rides into my return and I have never been faster on the bike, I have never felt more comfortable on the bike, I have never been more motivated, and I have never been closer to achieving my goals than I am now. This is where your company comes into play, I need you to help me along on my journey to becoming a top ranked WMA Pro. I have a plan of action, I have laid out the steps I need to take, I just need more support. My goal is to make my Pro debut at WMA Round 4 at Washougal in 2008.
I could send you a resume with results from nearly two years ago but that doesn't portray the kind of person I am. It doesn't matter what I did or didn't do two years ago, what matters is what I am doing now. Instead of dwelling on my unfortunate injuries, I have been focusing on what I can do. - What a lot of riders fail to realize is how important their education is. My number 1 priority was getting my school work done, and doing it well. I took 8 classes this past year, I received an A in 7 of them and I graduated in May among the top of my class with a 3.75 GPA.
- For the past year I have been working as an Editor at MXGirls.com. I have written and posted my own articles, product reviews, interviews, as well as posted regular updates and press releases from many different industry companies. I also wrote a few journal type entries that detailed my shoulder surgery and recovery process. I urge you to take a look at some of the work I have done for MXGirls.com.
- Right now I am working with a friend of mine and we are in the process of building a website for the motorcycle shop that sponsors me, Bernie's Cycle Service. Check it out, www.berniescycleservice.com. We still have a lot of work to do as we are developing our own parts-fiche database program.
- I recently started working with Miki Keller, President of the WMA to write some articles for the WMA. I am working on a few different articles at the moment and hope to have them finished as soon as I receive input from the racer's I am interviewing.
- Because of my active involvement in the women's motocross scene, I am constantly receiving emails from women, men, kids, adults, and many people from overseas asking me questions about how to get into the sport, how I am recovering, what they can do to obtain sponsors, how to convince their mom to let them get a bike, how to get their daughter to hold it on in the corners, and so on.
- My Doctor ordered 3 months of physical therapy, twice a week for my shoulder. Everyone told me how much I would hate physical therapy or PT as they call it, but this was the exact opposite. My attitude going into PT paired with some awesome therapists harbored much improvement. I loved PT and I looked forward to going each time. My physical therapist, Jessica decided to be exceedingly tough with me for the sole reason that I race Motocross. She has me doing exercises that I didn't even think were possible. In fact, I have impressed all the therapists so much that they are going to let me continue therapy just so I can help motivate the other patients.
- I have picked up several books and tapes that help me improve my mental state and attitude. This is the kind of approach that most people laugh at but I can honestly say it works. This is what kept me motivated for the past year when it was hard to see my progress. I have learned how to cope with and overcome my injury. I have learned how to break through fears and mental blocks that inhibit my performance. I have learned how to push myself to continue when I want to quit. I could go on and on.
- I recently started a job at FedEx as a full-time package handler and I work 37 hours a week. This is going to help me pay off my new bike and truck that I am paying for entirely myself. My parents help me out and support me with the costs of this sport but they are definitely making me appreciate hard work. That is why every sponsorship deal counts and why I work so hard to be a person that sponsors value.
I have accomplished a great deal in the past year. Every spare minute was spent thinking of even more ways I can help myself improve. So believe me when I tell you that I have been doing everything I can to help further my career. I'm also open to suggestions if you have any.
My point here is simple, if you take a look at how hard I have been working in my time off, imagine the progress I will make once I have all the tools needed to succeed. Being injured for the most part of a year definitely takes its toll on ones motivation and I'll admit I've had my moments. Most people give up at this point and you find out who really wants it, I recognized that this was my time to shine and took advantage of it. Not only did I pursue every opportunity placed in front of me, I sought out even more opportunities. Sitting around and playing video games was not an option for me, a week after surgery I was showing up at the gym still fitted with my sling and doing lower body workouts. There are so many racers who say their dream is to become a Professional and that they really want it, but they aren't doing a good job of showing their commitment. Just saying that you have a goal is not enough. I have made my goal known and you can see how hard I have been working to achieve this goal and how much it means to me. Though I have not produced any race results, the results I have been producing are real and of value to me. They are results that I am proud of. The bottom line, look at how much media exposure I have been obtaining in my time off the bike. Now pair that with some awesome race results that your product will help me produce and there will be no limits placed on our success. I hope that you agree with me when I say that I am someone who your company truly wants to invest their efforts in. Upcoming Events2008 National Schedule -TBD
