2009 BITD Terrible's Gran Prix |
BITD - Ironman-Expert |
3rd Place - This was my first official Ironman race for Best in the Desert. I hadn’t had a race since the Blue Water GP back in May, but I’d been doing a lot of riding and practicing in the months preceding this event. I knew I could go the distance, but I could not anticipate every new strategy that would be necessary to place better than third... this time! I took advantage of the opportunity to pre-run the course in the morning unclassified race. It was good to get a feel for the racetrack, dial in the Raptor 700, and warm myself up before the main event. During the main event, I was third into the 1st turn. The track was dusty on the first lap, and poor visibility was an issue. This is when the morning’s pre-run became advantageous. On three occasions on the first lap, I was passed as I broke hard and slowed down for extremely sharp turns. Each of those times, the guy who passed me either missed the turn or crashed, because they didn’t know what to expect! The last guy who tried it was in my class, and he never caught up after that. After completing the first 8-mile lap, I had much improved visibility for the remainder of the race. This allowed me to go as fast as possible and create a gap between me and whoever was behind me. I was having a great time as I made a quick pit stop after lap 3 for a splash of gas, a quick check of the tires, and a wipe of the number plates. It was fast and furious all the way through, until I finally got lapped by a few of the pros, including Wayne Matlock, on my 7th lap. After the race, one of the pros said that I held him off and he couldn’t pass me for about a mile. I took that as a big compliment! He wasn’t upset, because I didn’t know he was a pro until he took this crazy line on the inside of a turn. When I caught a glimpse of his number plate, I took the next turn wide and let him pass on the inside. As soon as I came across the finish line, I knew I had done pretty well, but I wasn’t exactly sure where the other 5 guys in my class were. One of them was right in front of me. I later learned that I only missed 2nd place by 44 seconds. Had I known I was that close, I think I would’ve been able to hunt him down. However, I never saw his dust and I never had him in my sights, so I didn’t know that he was within my reach. Next time, I’ll try to keep a closer eye on the competition! Besides the race, it was an awesome weekend spent with old friends (Fernie, Frank, Brittany, Jared, Josh, Chris & Big D), new friends (even the competition… wut up Eric, Alejandra & James!), and family. Casey, Richard, Diane, George, Greg and everyone else at Best in the Desert always do an awesome job. You always know you are in good hands when you race with Best in the Desert. There were photographers from Event Photo Digital and ATVriders.com taking pictures and getting riders to show off for the camera. I raced about 80 miles total that day, no crashes, the weather was perfect… man, you should’ve been there! |

2nd place! Danny, Fernie & I all had a pretty smooth race... except for the time that Fernie went over the bars! It was a great day for racing, however, and we were able to keep with it to the end for a solid 2nd place finish. I'll post our standing in our class for this seasons points race as I get the official results. Thanks to all my family, friends and sponsors for their unyielding support all season long. I can't wait for the first BITD race of 2009... the Parker 250 on January 10th in Arizona! |

5th place - In an effort to speed things up and have the racecourse cleared for the Trophy-Lite and UTV race that was scheduled to follow the morning quad race, BITD decided to have a grand prix style finish for this event. Starting position is determined by luck-of-the-draw, and we had to start at the back of the pack in our class. With riders leaving one at a time, 30 seconds apart, there was a considerable amount of dust on the course for the duration of the race. At one pint, I was having a little too much and getting carried away, when I the rythm felll out of the rythm-section of whoops and I started to swap out. I scrubbed off a lot of speed and held on as I gott tossed back and forth... until a bead gave out on my right rear tire, and I got flung down into the silt. I jumped back up and fired the quad up. I knew right away that something was wrong, because it really was hard to keep it straight and heading in the right direction! I had to fight to control the quad as I raced to the pit and it took a little time to change the tire at the next pit. We missed the cut-off to complete a fourth lap by less than 2 minutes. We would have liked to start the fourth and final lap for a chance to place better than 5th in our class. However, this was not the case, and we were cut-off after 3 laps. Otherwise, we could have done better than 5th place. I think this result jeopardized our chances to be in the running for a class championship. My team and I are looking forward to redeeming ourselves on December 6th at BITD’s last race of the season, the Henderson 400! By the way, it doesn't really matter what place we came in... it was a fun, fast race... Good times! |

1st place! It was amazing... While we waited for Fernie at Pit 1, we heard some disturbing chatter over the race radios that some pit crews were using. Esteemed pro-class ATV rider Wayne Matlock had gone down hard, resulting in injuries that would take him out of the race. For the record, his teammate Harold Goodman finished the rest of the race solo and scored 3rd place (Get well soon, Matlock)! Fernie started off great, coming into pit 1 so fired up that he said he felt he could ride the whole way to Reno! We topped him off with gas and sent him on his way to pit 2, where he would hand the quad over to Danny. Syd, Joe and I made our way to pit 3 where I would get geared up and ready for my first leg of the race (45.5 miles)… Please read my BLOG for the rest of the story! |

6th place - Parker, AZ... it was HOT!!! This race was like no other... we started out the morning pre-running the course. This is the only race in the BITD season that has any kind of pre-run before the main event. It's about a 10-mile loop composed of fire roads, rocks, hill-climbs, drop-offs, sand, silt, mud, pavement, railroad ties and a junkyard! Crazy... but fun!! There was a big pile-up after the GP-style start (also unique to this event), which we got caught behind. The dust provided little visibility on the first lap, causing my teammate to get a flat front tire. We lost valuable time in the pits before continuing on. We made up great time on the team that placed before us... we would've got them if we had one more lap! We completed 7 laps for a 6th place finish. The only people who passed me were Q1 (Wayne Matlock) and Q4 (Nic Granlund). Nic was WAY ahead of the competiton for the majority of the race, and I believe he nabbed the overall win for quads. This was the 2nd quad race of the '08 season in the BITD series. Vegas-to-Reno is next! |

3rd place - Fast, tough, 80+ miles per team member... we had a great time! Fernie, Danny and I all had a clean race. Some riders destroyed their quads trying to make it to the finsih line. After the race, our '08 YFZ 450 was ready to go another 250 miles! That's good, becuase that's what we're going to have to do to finish the Vegas to Reno race... The next ATV race in the BITD series is the Blue Water Grand Prix on May 17th. |

BITD Henderson 400 |
|
DNF - We almost made it! We lost the chain 2/3 of the way into the last lap. Danny, Fernie and I were all going fast and having fun. We ran hard, and had we been able to get rolling again, we would've placed in the top 3. It rained all day and night right before the race. The first 22 miles were the wettest, muddiest conditions I've ever ridden or raced in! The first 22 mi. were part of the car/truck course, and the 32-mile loop that followed was just for bikes and quads. The bike/quad course at the Henderson 400 is one of the most technical and challenging and rocky track out West. It's extremely challenging for riders and brutal on equipment. There were four laps around the 32-mile loop, adding up to 150 total race miles (we completed about 140). It was insane! |

11th place - FUN race!!! Lot's of sandy washes and crazy hillclimbs. The 36 mile loop was designed specifically for quads and UTVs (Rhinos & RZRs). We could have placed one or two positions higher, but my buddy stopped to help an injured rider on the 1st lap. Best In The Desert puts on amazing races! We're all looking forward to the Henderson 400... |

12th place - Competed in the race sick with the flu & still recovering from crash 2 weeks prior! Got cut-off after 3 laps (the leaders finished 4 laps - grand prix style), which led to my 12th place finish. Still... I kept the rubber-side down, had fun and got some seat time before my next race. |

BITD Las Vegas 300 |
BITD - ATV Amateur Sportsman |
6th place - About 4 miles into the race, I got passed by everyone in my class when I stopped to help an injured rider. I tried to catch up and ended up with my own problems! I crashed 6 miles into the race, but completed the next 61 miles with a dislocated collar bone. The quad suffered a bent steering stem and handlebars, loss of a steering damper, and a busted throttle. The next two riders on my team were able to finish the next 134 miles of the race on the damaged quad. |

DNF - I came back without the rear skid plate, then the quad became un-rideable after my partner in crime smashed the rear disc brake against a nasty Henderson rock... |

WORCS Oceano Dunes Race |
WORCSsanc - ATV Vet 30+ B |
6th place - Rough course this year! HUGE drop-off after the 2nd turn was memorable. It was wet & foggy, which made the sand sticky and funky (you can't run paddles, even though it's a beach race). The course got all whooped-out by all the classes running all weekend long. |

SCORE Baja 500 |
SCORE - ATV Amateur Sportsman |
DNF - The race quad was destroyed early in the race when a teammate went off-course into a gulley. We tried to put it back together, but it took too much time and our window of opportunity to get fuel from Honda pits closed. It was a major downer! The pre-running was incredible, however... |
