Bio

Gina was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Lourdes College with double Bachelor's Degrees in 2003.  A former diehard skateboarder, a host of injuries pushed her to find a new passion that might be a little easier on old injuries. At the start of the 2008 race season, she was pushed to pick up a bike by stepson and then-NBL National #13, Elijah Gilbert (www.elijahgilbert.com). Little did she know that what started as a way to spend time with her 7 year old counterpart would turn into nothing short of an obsession.

In just 12 short weeks of racing, Gina learned the basics of BMX and helped start a women's cruiser class at her home track. During the 2008 season, she took 1st place at the Ohio State Qualifier at  Lay Industrial BMX,  2nd place in the annual Who's Bad Challenge, and won the ladies' cruiser points championship for the year at her home track.  At the end of the season, she was the top rider in her District for 2008 and earned the prestigious ABA #1 plate for her efforts.

Heading into 2009, Gina picked up several top-notch sponsors, including SE Bikes, Lipz Panelz, Spy Optic, ODI Grips, Six Feet Deep Clothing, Globe Shoes, Rockwell Time, and Christopher Bean.  Despite breaking her wrist early in the season, Gina persevered, riding with an air cast for more than two months and finsihing the year as the NBL's National #2 rider.

While off the track,  Gina's other interests include playing guitar and spending time with her family. She is a self-proclaimed fan of  "coffee, baseball caps, and all things canine." You can drop her a line at www.myspace.com/authenticmav.

Q&A - Competition

How did you get started?

I only got started riding BMX bikes because of my stepson, Elijah. He is an amazing rider. He is 7 and already has been a state champion and is currently ranked National #13 in the NBL. I was actually a little intimidated when I first started, but I was hooked. Racing bikes is addictive.

List your competitive highlights:

I actually made District #1 for the 2008 season. I also won the Ohio State Qualifier at my home track, I think less than a month after starting to ride. I was the runner up in the annual Who's Bad Challenge as well. Then at the end of the 2008 season, I was awarded the women's cruiser class high points championship trophy.

What are you planning for next season?

Throughout 2009 I'll be riding the NBL National Series with the family. We have plans to stop in at least four states: Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and of course Kentucky for the NBL Grand Nationals.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

I think just going from not being able to really ride at all, to learning how to balance in the gate, and moving on to really being a contender with the other ladies in my class in something like 12 short weeks. It's been amazing to meet so many cool people and gain all that confidence.

Q&A - Personal

How's Life Treating You?

Life is great. I'm loving being married and just enjoying the family life.

Do you train? What does your schedule look like?

I train about five days a week. I hit cardio hard for endurance and then weight train, splitting specific muscle groups into separate days.

Why do you like this sport?

I fell in love with the community. There's no better sport to have your child involved in. Everyone's a winner in BMX. Even if it's your first time around a track, or if you just took a spill, you've got people cheering for you.

Music?

I get inspired by a variety of different music. I play guitar, so my tastes vary a lot. I listen to country on the radio, but I love some hard rock or metal to get going at practice. When they play Metallica, it's on.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

I haven't been too embarrassed yet, if only because the community is so great at my home track, you don't have to worry about making mistakes. I did almost catapult myself over the gate in Norwalk (Ohio) though. I had been riding ABA gates all year and forgot about the random gate. That could've been ugly.
