Q&A - Competition

How did you get started?

In 1988 my dad and step-mom thought my step-brother could beat me in a triathlon. They thought he was a better swimmer and cyclist. So, they entered both of us into a triathlon in Lenexa, Kansas. What they didn't realize is that their challenge to us fired me up. I had to show them what I was made of. I ended up getting 59th place out of about 550 people. My step-brother was 459th place. I guess I showed them!

List your competitive highlights:

In high school I qualified and competed in the Missouri State Track and Field meet all four years in the 3200 meter run. I also had the opportunity to run cross country and track at a division II school in Missouri. Since I graduated college I've just trained myself and entered different road races and triathlons.

What are you planning for next season?

Well, to finish up 2009 I have these events planned: 1. Strawberry Field Triathlon 2. Pacific Coast Triathlon 3. Castaic Lake Sprint Triathlon II 4. Hansen Dam Triathlon 5. USAT Age Group Nationals 6. Pumpkinman Triathlon

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

Overcoming my fear of the open water.

Q&A - Personal

What inspires you to compete?

God has given me my main inspiration to compete. I just have this drive inside of me that wants to do the best I can in everything that I do. I love to get faster in the events I do. I really like trying to beat the people who I remember seeing from event to event.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

I was on one of my first rides with the clipless shoes and pedals. The group I was riding with was coming up on a red light. I got stopped and was doing just fine. All of the sudden I started tipping toward my left side. The side that was still clipped in. And that was all she wrote. Within seconds I was on the ground and everyone else took off.

Why do you like this sport?

I like the sport of triathlon because your not stuck doing the same thing all of the time. I've also found that since I'm starting to get a little older I can still compete at a fairly high level. I also like the fact that the condition I'm in is much higher than when I was just running. The cross training has improved my condition greatly.

Do you train? What does your schedule look like?

You have to train if you want to compete. So, of course, I do. I try to swim 4 to 6 miles a week, ride 150 miles a week and run 35 to 40 miles a week. In all of the areas of triathlon I incorporate long distance workouts and speed work of all types. Recovery and rest is also very important.
