Q&A - Self Interview

What sets you apart from other racers?

I don't just ride BMX, I live it! My dorm room looks like a bike shop, I work at a bike store, I have a bike tattooed on me and if you consult my Facebook page, you will fing I am even married to my bike! I also feel that I am very well rounded off the track.

Tell us about working at a bike store.

My first job, at the age of 15, was at Elite Cycling an Fitness in Miami. The owner, KC Boutiette, hired me as the 3rd employee in a new business. This was a phenomenal experience for a number of reasons. KC is a 4 time US Olympian and I learned a lot from him. He helped me with my training, but more importantly taught me the dedication it takes to be an athlete of such high caliber. I also learned to be a great mechanic, becoming more knowledgeable than most racers about the equipment aspect of the sport. Most of all though, I became a member of a close knit family that taught me a lot about life as I grew from a 15 year old at my first job to an 18 year old manager in a successful small business. I am currently employed at Performance Bicycles in Chapel Hill, NC.

Speaking of Chapel Hill, tell us a little about school. How is that going?

It is going very well. I am a Biology major at UNC Chapel Hill. It was a big decision going out of state for school, but what can I say? I like to do it right or not at all and when I got into such a good school, I had to go for it all. So far, I'm making good grades (yes I'm a closet nerd) and loving school. Go Heels!

Out of state? Wow! But you must be used to traveling...

Yes, I'm fortunate enough to be able to say I've traveled quite a bit. I've been all over Florida and the country for races and this summer, I left the country to race for the first time. I stayed with my dad in Sevilla, Spain for a few weeks and did some riding there. Then, in July, I went to Adelaide, Australia for Worlds with my mom. It was such a great experience to go with her. She races too, and actually ended up 7th in the world in 45+ Ladies Cruiser! I'm so proud of her!

What can we expect to see from you in the near future?

Expect to see me at tracks around NC and expect to see me flying! I'm going to be teaching monthly clinics at Comp Park BMX in Garner also. Around Christmas time, look for me back in the great Florida weather. Also, look for me on the Dean's list! (fingers crossed)
