a little about me...Hey my name is Blake Norville. I'm 19 and a sophomore at NC State University where I'm majoring in mechanical engineering. I love to compete and kart racing is a big part of my life and I consider it to be the third most important activity in my life behind church and school right now. I also enjoy sports, riding 4 wheelers, riding jet skis, wakeboarding, video games and pretty much anything else fun. If you have any questions for me feel free to send me a message or leave me a comment. Greensboro Coliseum -- King of the ConcreteQ&A - Personal
What inspires you to compete?
First of all I'm a really competitive person and like to win in whatever I do. But also I compete because its fun and I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't. Also racing gives me and my dad an opportunity to spend a lot of time together.
Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
Yes, especially after I've started running more classes. For the most part I try and at least work out in the weight room and also do some cardio workouts 3 times a week or more if I get more time between classes.
Describe your style...
I'm the nervous type especially waiting on the grid for the race to start but once on the track I settle in really well. While racing I would say that I am a very patient driver until it gets down to the last few laps and from there I can definitely get aggressive when I need to.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Right now I'm sophomore working on my BS degree in Mechanical Engineering at NC State University.
Employment / Experience Summary
I was born and raised on a farm so I have always worked on the family farm and I have also worked with many other farmers in the area.
Q&A - Competition
How did you get started?
My dad use to help one of his buddies who raced karts way back before I was born. Then when I was young I went to a lot of races with him and before long I really got in to it and decided I wanted to race.
List your competitive highlights
Making the field in the 2003 WKA Daytona Dirt World Championships (this was the first event I had ever ran that was WKA sanctioned before I had only run a couple of weekly races.) I qualified 17th out of over 120 karts in my class and was moving through the pack until I got caught up in a wreak.
Eastern Indoor Dirt Karting Nationals - Qualified 2nd in both medium and lite and finished 2nd in medium and led a couple of laps in lite before falling back and getting in a wreak.
Qualifying 7th at the King of the Concrete race in Greensboro Coliseum. I consider this to be a highlight because this was the first time I had ever raced on anything besides dirt and I made the field with over 45 drivers trying for 14 spots.
While these highlights don't really showcase great finishes I consider these to be some of my major career highlights because they are major turning points in my racing career. Also these events had quite a few "big names" in attendance.
What are you planning for next season?
Next year we plan to run the North-South $$$ Series which is a big series at our local track. But we are also planning to run a couple of big money races, at least 3 big indoor events(King of the Concrete and probably 2 at the Williamston Indoor arena) and possibly even run a couple of speedway pavement races. In the other times that we don't have big events planned I'll be racing at one of the local tracks.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
In my opinion my biggest accomplishment has been overcoming the learning curve that I faced for understanding the kart and the feel of certain handling characteristics. I first started racing really competitively at age 13 due to a bad wreak that I got involved in when I was younger that caused me to "rethink" the idea of racing for a while. But after I started back a lot of my competition had quite a few more years of experience and that was something that I had to overcome before I got to there level.
