A Day in the Dirt Race Report
Saturday,
Trent raced the open novice (with the kids) and we were amongst the first 10 that signed up so we were all on the first row of everything, Trent led most of the race then was passed on the last lap by Taylor Kellstrom but he ultimately got second which was awesome, Greg Barbacovi liked the MXmortgage.com concept and must have mentioned it 100 times during that race.
I did not race till noon which was the North South race which was shortened to 6 laps because they were running late , I had not really thought through the starting procedure, last year I tried to jam the bike into gear like the heroes do and stalled it so I decided against that and used the clutch but my knee brace and boot were bound up and I could not move my leg to get the bike in gear and started last, I reeled in every one but Darrin Hoeft who started in our line which I thought was ok because he is really fast, but then he went down I passed him and was able to stay in front of him till the 5th lap when he passed me but I stayed after it and almost caught him at the end, then they told me that he was actually supposed to be in the expert line which meant that I won. Don did great in that race he got second after not so good of a start which is unlike him, it’s usually Don hole shot Goettling but he managed to pick through the traffic to get on the podium.
Vet GP:
I figured the start out and pulled a fat hole shot even though some riders had their clutch in with the bike in gear, Jason McCune passed me in the first big table which I still had not done as well as the down hill double, I guess that the fact that they were blind did not help plus this was only the third time I had been there, oh well better safe than sorry I guess. Anyway I rode like a pansy and finished fourth even though Bryan Friday faded bad I still could not pass him because I wasn’t doing those jumps. (I was not happy) finishing order Fontes, McCune, Friday & Ford.
Sunday:
The N-style Senior GP:
I missed the gear shifter with my calf and was late in the first turn but after the first few turns (riding like Charles Manson) I was in second behind Bryan Friday (who beat me on Saturday)
I knew that I would have to do all the jumps to beat this guy so I gutted up and did them on the first lap, they were a piece of cake, all that anxiety for nothing. We quickly gapped the third place rider, I never saw them again after the first lap, I knew that Bryan would fade eventually because he did In the Vet race yesterday but the track was a freeway with no bumps I did not count on was him doing the big jumps with as many as 5 riders on the jump, I was not doing the jump in traffic. And I was unable to do the step up twice but was able to reel him back in the same lap, I was feeling confident because I was able to run him down three times from pretty far back but then the white flag came out which surprised me because I was not really tired. I knew that he probably was so I made a big charge over on the vet track and was able to get by him. I was elated but the roost really messed me up. But I’d do it again to win.
Moto A Go Go:
Last year we had a little side wager amongst teams which was won by Joe Sutter and Johnny Benskin, this year we started all the novice riders in the 5th row instead of the last row like last year and we decided that all bets were off if anyone went to the hospital.
Right away Eishi pulled a 10 second lead on Trent who was caught up in traffic and unable to jump some of the jumps. In the exchange area Eishi and Jason had some trouble which shrunk their lead to about 6 seconds, now that I was doing those jumps I was able to pull back a few seconds on Jason but in the exchange area I could not find Trent which cost us another 5 seconds, Trent was able to maintain the deficit even though the traffic was ridiculous we had a clean exchange this time and I was able to reduce the deficit to 5 seconds, then Trent pulled back the 5 second deficit and was right on Eishi in the exchange area, for some reason Jason did not do the big table top which is where I passed him but in typical Hapa style he never gave up and stayed right in my tire tracks, I know the roost is bad following me. In the exchange area the scrunchy got up under my jersey and we lost another 5 seconds and Eishi got past us again and again Trent reeled him in and passed him and some guy T-Boned Trent in the exchange area, but we were able to maintain the lead, I was able to increase the lead by 5 seconds or so and we finally had a clean exchange and Trent Brought it home for the victory, actually we finished 6th in the race which was amazing since there was no designation the Pro’s, Expert, Intermediates & Novices rode together and the guys ahead of us did not start on your row and they were not novice and intermediate teams like we were.
